CCOM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is a titer clinic about 6 wks after the beginning of school. You can get your titers done there and have them bill your tuition, so you aren't feeling the affects directly in your checking/savings account during the summer.

I called my insurance company and they said I am not covered for this. Is there some special way to make them pay? I have been calling around and it is really hard to find out how much places charge for the titers. At the university hospital here they are charging almost 2x what the midwestern university wellness center. It is almost worth it to drive to chicago just to get this crap done. Anyone have any tips?

Hey, I just got accepted off the waitlist to CCOM and most likely will be comin up there from Florida. I havent gotten my info packet yet, but does anyone have info about housing? Does anyone (who isnt creepy) still need a roomate? Im fun and love to have a good time, work hard play hard. Let me know!

I'm looking at laptops for next year, and i might be getting an HP.

What are people buying for next year? Whats good? and do any current students buy laptops to bring them to class or do most peoople just use the written notes?

I will make fun of you if you bring your laptop to class... behind your back of course.
🙂

but seriously, I have a gateway laptop and it is a great computer. I hear HPs overheat but I dont know that from experience

dude, like of the 10 people that actually went to class, maybe 1 used their laptop.

KushLash,

I am looking for a roomate, I was also just accepted off the waitlist in early july too...the price of some apartments really goes down when get a 2 room instead of a single. Private message me if you are interested.

Vox,

I have been looking at laptops a lot lately. I really like Dell's, the company I work for over the summer uses all Dell products. However, I have also been looking at Tablet PC's (Lenovo, Toshiba, etc.)...there is a great thread on the allopathic forum about tablets. Anyways, I talked to a 4th yr CCOM'er and he said not to bother with the tablet. I think I will be getting a laptop...most likely a Dell or Lenovo, but I would urge you to stay away from HP/Compaq...I am not a fan of their hardware.

Lenovo beats the **** out of Dell anyday. I have a T43 that is now a year old and its the best piece of machinery I think Ive owned.

I also got a really good price on it though...

are there any dorms left even? if so, which are the best to live in? or are apts the way to go

I had my HP for about a year now. it is pretty nice. I haven't experienced the overheating problem yet.

For anyone interested in laptops...do a search on google for notebook reviews or laptop reviews; it might help you with the decision.

On a side note, I am really excited for school to start...I actually wish we would start sooner because I want to be done with work and I want to get the ball rolling with Anatomy...yeah baby!! wooh!

Anyone else really pumped up?

I have a couple questions I was hoping to get answered by returning students, if any would be so kind...

First, what does the first week as a CCOM student look like? I am currently scheduled to compete in a triathlon the weekend of Sept. 9th and I'm wondering if I should pull that race. Will I be too crazy with classes?
Second, on the computer issue, I've been wanting to get an apple notebook for a while now but I hear that's not a good idea for med students, something about software issues, any opinions?

I guess that's it for now. Thanks in advance!

I am not a returning student, but I can try to answer the computer question. Apple now has an operating system that mimics windows, so any software that requires windows should be able to work on mac computers...good luck in the triatholon...is it in Chicago?

Thanks! The Chicago tri is the weekend before orientation begins, the race on the 9th is in Indiana so I'll be gone most the weekend, thus my concern about missing out on anything the first week.

I assume we don't have any tests the first week, but with the ccom schedule I can't be sure haha. I had a question on insurance issues too- Are there comparable plans in Illinois for health insurance that are similar to ccom's offer? It seems a bit steep, and the 2006-2007 prices weren't even up yet. I assume there will be representatives at orientation, as it said on the packet. Any advice from current students? Thanks.

You should be ok doing your with your race. Last year we had two weeks of class and our first test was the next monday.

Does the "Health Insurance Fee" that shows up on my financial aid award letter mean that Midwestern provides the insurance? I was under the impression that we had to buy our own insurance.

I’m sorry if it says somewhere on the website, but I don’t feel like searching for 10 hours.

Does anyone have a tablet PC or recommend them here. I figure if im getting something i mite as well pay out the extra and get something nice

Ok, seriously, does anyone out there still need a roomate or know of anyone that needs one?? I cant just live on the streets there, although I guess it would be fairly cheaper... let me know!

hey guys-I'm excited to meet you all in the fall. One quick question-Has anyone received information about orientation yet?

Vox, I found some sweet deals on Toshiba Portege's...with the Intel Duo Core...great processor

Anyone going to be in Madison, WI this weekend? I am heading there to clean out my apartment but if anyone is in the area I would love to meet out for a drink or two 😀

So i just bought a cx2724 tablet gateway pc from best buy. ~1700 out the door with warranties, any opinions?

Yeah. You probably wasted your money. I hardly even used my laptop in a manner which would be considered contributive to school.

I got my IBM T43 last year because I didnt want a piece of ****. If I had to do it again, Id just buy a piece of ****. You don't need it for much.

I do have to admit, those are cool computers.

Yes, It doesnt happen often but as I said, they are trying to change it. Also, I dont think many DO students are even interested in a combined degree. A lot of the schools that have that kind of program do not have a whole lot of students in them.

I never said that the DO/PhD program at CCOM was awesome by any means. I just mentioned that it existed -- If someone felt ambitious, they have the opportunity to go for it.

Sorry to butt in so late into this conversation but the DO/PHD is absolutely possible at CCOM! I know two people that are doing it right now actually! Now with that said...u better be willing to do all the leg work on your own, and coordination on your own, cuz there is very little guidance going on in that dept. The two people that I know of are doing their research abroad...for example i know one girl that is taking a year to do AIDS research over in Africa...

So is there the option...there ABSOLUTELY IS...so your resources have definitely given you the right information...but if its something that you are interested in you will be doing most of the leg work on your own! good luck with your decisions

If you are looking to buy near school...
My wife and I are moving to be closer to her job and my rotation sites.
We are selling our 2 bedroom 1.5 bath townhome 3 miles from CCOM.
The mortgage, taxes, and insurance are about the same as renting a similar sized place in the area.

Yeah I got it a couple of days ago, I'll be in group A...does anyone know if we need to send a check for $56 dollars with the new background check sheet?

I am so jacked for orientation and the start of school...I haven't been this excited since my freshman year of college!

I just got off the phone with student services and you do not need to send a check of $56 for the new background check.

I am actually looking at doing the PhD program at Loyola in pharmacology.

I talked to Dr. Nichols, she says she know of no one in recent years that has done it and in her words, "it is very difficult to do, due to the fact that you must interface between two different universities."

I am awaiting reply from the new director of research because the previous one left, FYI.
