CCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been complete since 10.26 and still haven't heard anything! I emailed them last week and they said that I should hear from them that week or next week (which is now this week and I am still waiting). In the mean time I have been accepted at TUCOM Ca and put a deposit down and was invited to interview at Arizona over a month ago. CCOM has been my first choice from the beginning but I have seriously soured on them due to their inability/unwillingness to provide applicants with ANY information during the process. I have been so disappointed with them.

I feel your pain! I hope you get an interview. Its crazy! I've heard of people interviewing with much lower stats then me. I have tons of DO shadowing experience, great letters (including a well-known DO), and just about everything else....still no love.

I was complete around December 10th and just got an interview invite today! 🙂

why do you think they act this way? that would be a total turn off

has anyone gotten off the alernate list yet?

i was wondering the same thing. i'm on the alternate list as well and have been calling them every few weeks or so to see if there has been any movement. they've been pretty vague about how many people are on the list and when they start reviewing those applicants who are on the alternate list. does anyone anything different?

i'm alternate listed too, no news yet...seems like they DO sometimes look into the list earlier, but usually there is no movement until summer..=(

Finally got my interview invite! I am scheduled to interview 2.14, anyone else?

I wish I got an interview invite. This pre-interview waitlist is frustrating! :scared:

is there a facebook group for Class of 2012 CCOM?

So I was browsing the CCOM site and found this:

Additional applicants may be placed on an interview “Waiting List” pending possible interview openings toward the end of the interview cycle. The on-campus interview process typically begins in September and ends in April.

I would ideally like an interview now, but I will take one in April if that's what they give me! Boo to waitlists!

You can come off the pre-interview waitlist before April. Good Luck!

Does anyone know ANY details about the alternate list... anything bout number of ppl or odds of getting accepted?! Im seriously getting so antsy in my pantsy. It drives me up the wall knowing that i gotta plan out all these moving arrangements while my own state school drags along with this "alternate list" 😡

They say the alternate list doesnt start moving until the summer around June. Sucks.

I have been complete since 10.26 so quite a while. My interview date got changed though. Anyone else interviewing Jan. 28th?

That's awesome that you got it changed. It's 2 weeks closer, AND it's not on Valentine's Day! 🙂 Good luck!

I know a lot of people came off the waitlist this year...unfortunately some of them were the week before school began (July). There were quite a few that came off before then, but it can be rather late. I believe it is pretty much the same for most schools. They call when they have openings. Good Luck!

Thanks! The funny thing is when I made the original interview it didn't even occur to me it was valentine's day. I called them though to let them know that I am local so I could come at the last minute if anyone cancels and I got lucky. I don't think it will make a difference though because I hear that they meet every month on the 25th to make admissions decisions so I will still be in the February decision group which I am a tad worried about. I REALLY want to go here even though I have already put a $2000 deposit down in San Fran.

If I get into another school I'm waiting to hear back from, then I'll be giving up my acceptance here. HOpefully one of you guys will be offered that seat if this happens.

If not, then I hope you guys get in cuz then us fellow SDNers can try to figure out who is who in medschool together :-D

ok really weird...received a rejection pre-secondary from CCOM about 2-3 weeks ago because my science GPA was .009 under the requirement. BUT, today I just received the secondary and it indicated that I had met the initial requirements and was invited to submit it ASAP.

is this normal? are my chances basically 0 or did they maybe see something else in my app that the like??

thanks

I would call them if I were you. Roger Corbman at Touro-NV e-mailed me the secondary but when I e-mailed him a few weeks later to ask if it was worth my time to fill out (my MCAT is below their "cut-off") he told me I would not be receiving the secondary. 😕 He told me I would be receiving a rejection letter and I did a few days later. I'm really glad I didn't spend the $200 for that secondary because I sure as heck would have asked for a refund when they decided to take my secondary back. I'm not bitter though. 😉

Hey guys, I was interviewed at CCOM and I was kind of disappointed by the school. Despite of excellent rotation sites including Loyola (Northwestern, Rush and the rest of the Chicago MD schools are not in the list), the overall condition of the school is way below other schools I have been interviewed at. The old/grim buildings, old gross anatomy lab (no LCD screens, no technology whatsoever in the gross lab). When I got to the school, I felt that I returned back into pre-computer 70's era. Also, the internet access was SLOW dial-up speed throughout the campus, not all the buildings are wireless. Some buildings have wireless access for faculty/staff only.

The landscaping (especially the park) is pretty bad as well. The park is pretty wild and not taken care off. Cafeteria feels like my old undergrad with the exception that food did taste better. The only thing is that the staff did not seem to take care of the salad buffet area very well.

I felt that the university should spend a LOT of money to bring everything up to a descent level. The new gym building is very weird with people running in the hallways. Looks like these guys are trying to save money and cut as many corners as they can. DMU for example seemed far ahead of CCOM as far as technology and quality of the facilities went.

It seemed that the university is seriously lagging behind in terms of technology and facilities. I think if they were to update the campus, they have a potential to become the most desired program in the country.

I thought the school was pretty nice.. then again, I only went for a tour.. so I didn't get to see everything.

I'd basically do anything to get into CCOM, I just wish they knew that.. they have ignored me and my LOI thusfar.. 🙁

im in the same boat, ive been accepted to DMU (and i loved it there) but i would still like to receive an interview from CCOM since it is my state school and i have taken mini med school classes there and really liked the campus as well......after all, it never hurts to have options when it comes to choosing a medical school and deciding what the best fit is

you have to see some other schools like DCOM, Nova-COM, AZCOM, and ATSU-Mesa, they are very techcologically advanced. TCOM, along with CCOM are pretty old and grimy

As an MS-I at CCOM, I would like to respond. You are definitely entiltled to your opininion and I would agree with some but not all. Technology is important but not everything. While the gross anatomy lab may seem old, it has some of the best anatomy faculty I have ever encountered. And I speak from experience having taken gross before as a PA student at another medical school. CCOM has a reputation for being VERY strong in anatomy. The faculty are very hands on and I have not missesd the LCD screens there.

Yes, the internet speed is terrible, but they are currently overhauling the system and it is supposed to be very fast within the next few months. All of the buildings that the Med students regularly have classes in or study in are wireless access and we have never had problems with this.

I am not sure when you interviewed, but our landscaping in very nice, (and they recently developed a new walking trail) especially in the summer/spring (not much to do for a Chicago winter). The larger 'park' actually belongs to the forrest preserve and not the campus.

I agree that the cafeteria could definitely be improved. They are in the process of tearing down some old buildings and have recently remodeled others, so I think they are improving.

There are so many strong aspects of this program that I would not let physical structures be a block. Good luck with your interviews.

We do have rotations at Rush.
Marcia

^^ thanks. They gave us a list with the rotations sites and Rush was not there, neither was NW. Can you rotate at any MD school in Chicago area?

I have to agree that the school is great and students match really well. They should not cut corners on things and really work much harder on updating their facilities. I was surprized to see the class rooms from the 80s. I think if they do all those things I mentioned, they will become even a more desirable school.

How does CCOM inform you of interviews?? Email? Snail mail? Do you set them up on your own? (through the midwestern interview scheduling system online?) or do they give you a date?

snail mail, think envelope with two papers in it. there is a scheduling website you have to go to. You have a choice of dates.

Any Chicagoans out there want to give their take on the storm going on now? I have an interview tomorrow and have been sitting in JFK for 3 hours waiting to leave (I should have left at 1:45, now delayed until 4:15).

I'm worried that by 4:15 the weather is just going to get worse and I never get out of here tonight. I talked to someone in admissions, who said they could bump my interview time to 10:30 for me, but I feel like even that would be wishful thinking if I can't get out of here till the morning...AHHHHH😡

wow..you are right..it shows that it is supposed to snow for the next forseeable future...how many inches are we supposed to get total?

also looks like the east coast is getting hit too...bad timing

as a last resort, maybe fly into an airport a few hours away, rent a car and drive to CCOM. Other than that, and if the flight is delayed/canceled, I dont know what else you can DO....

the whole area is a mess..WI, IN, and IL..and it is heading east...perhaps flying to iowa city, ia? its about 3 hours away from ccom...this way you are west of the storm

I had an interview there last Tuesday and my flight was supposed to leave at 7:00 pm. I got there early and ran to the gate to try and catch a 3:00 pm flight. I got on and it's a good thing because I would probably still be there (all the other flights to LA that night were cancelled). I guess this is just something we have to get used to if we end up in Chicago.🙁

Hello everybody....I recieved a notice that my secondary application to CCOM was complete about a month and a half ago....I have yet to get a rejection or notice for an interview....does this just mean I have been rejected? I am an out of stater from cincinnati, OH...does that hurt me?

my GPA -3.6 MCAT 28 and tons of research and quality volunteer service...i also played a varsity sport in college....do I have any chance of getting an interview request?

any advice would be greatly appreciated....THANKS!

Unfortunately I think it's hard to say. My husband got rejected a week or so ago after being complete since late October. He only has one research experience but a lot of teaching and volunteer experience, 3.4-3.5 GPA, 28 MCAT. Other people with lower stats have been accepted but it seems like that happened more early on. I think CCOM has been hard to read this cycle at least from what I've seen on here. :luck:

Well, it has been snowing here since about noon, and got heavy about 3:00, and I'm about 30-45 min west of CCOM. When I watched the weather they said we will get about 10" from this afternoon into tomorrow morning, and morning rush hour will be chaotic.

So, if you do make it in, be sure to give yourself double the normal amount of travel time. Good Luck!:luck:

why hasnt CCOM given me a shot off the alternate list?
i'm so frustrated..

honestly i've done everything under the moon to get into this school, starting with applying early this past summer, having above average stats, getting an M.S degree and excelling at it, letters of intent, amazing letters of rec, blah blah blah. one of my interviewers told me i got a perfect score on my interview, he said i was a shoe - in, yet i still ended up on the alternate list.

it's just such a terrible process.
