So what do you guys feel is the most difficult challenge pharmacists will face in the coming years and what would you do to overcome this challenge?

On a personal level you will be challenged to maintain the high standard of care which you know you are capable of while you are squeezed on one hand by the pressure of increased need for your services from an aging population. You are also squeezed on the other hand by thin profit margins and corperate pressure to do more with less.

You will go home dog tired and be grateful if you haven't killed anyone today.

This is true both in community and clinical practice.

This sounds like an essay question for an application.

On top of my head right now, I would say:
1. How to break down the stereotype that's been believed by so many people that pharmacists do "more" than just counting pills, sitting in front of computer checking each patient for the medication, side effects, ADR; and giving out drugs.

2. Self-prescription machine? that enables patients to get medication directly from doctor's prescription. Not sure when this thing will come out

3. Being "underestimated" by other health professionals, like physicians, surgeons, dentists, you name them

4. "Caught in the middle" between physician (patient-counseling) and pharm tech (in terms of dispensing drugs and technical skills).

5.......

more suggestions?

Problems of the future:

1) Lack of jobs in well saturated areas (i.e. California) - Regional Problem only!

2) Pharmacy Bubble which will lead to vast surpluses of well-qualified pharmacists!

3) FREE care for illegal immigrants which will bankrupt the US government, which has created havoc to states like California already.

What's that?

Its the prescription drug benefit plan that was passed in 2003 through the Medicare Modernization Act but won't go into effect until 2006. What's the budget for this whole thing now.. in the trillions? The whole thing was sloppily put together in the middle of the night. duuuh-uuumb..

The push by employers and PBMs to impose mandatory mail order prescription plans for maintenance meds as well as shrinking reimbursement rates by PBMs to retail pharmacies will cause many independents and marginally profitable retail pharmacies to close. This along with the coming glut of new pharmacy grads will mean that we will have a vast surplus of pharmacists.
