Hi everyone, I've been a member of the forum for some time, and I finally decided to post today to get your opinions on my chances for acceptance to a few Postbac programs, namely the Temple AMCS, UCSF Postbac, and some others in that same competitive range.

I've already taken all the pre-med requirements and I am NOT planning to apply to medical school until during the post bac programs.

Statistics:

BS Public Health (Tulane University - May 2014) - I'll be applying right out of undergrad.
GPA: 3.45-3.5 (Depending on my last two semesters)
GRE: V157 Q158 (Planning to retake, aiming for 160+ in each section) - thinking about MPH as well
SAT: 2150 ACT: 34

Experience
- Hospital volunteer for 4+ years
- Intern with UCSF Kidney Transplant Department
- Intern with New Orleans Health Department
- American Red Cross Member - active in the New Orleans Community
- Secretary of Public Health Undergraduate Student Government
- Resident Advisor for 3 years

Right now I'm really worried that my GPA is going to hinder my chances. Any tips/advice as to other postbac programs?

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Why do you need a postbac with your GPA?

Go take your MCAT.

After speaking to my counselor, she told me to take some time off to improve my chances of getting in to medical school.

Spend the time to study for your MCAT.

I plan to take the MCAT in the Spring, but that still means I'll have a gap year to kill prior to medical school, provided I get in. I figured a postbac is a good option for that gap year, would working be a better option then?

Also - my science GPA is low, 3.0 as of now.

Why are you wasting your time taking the GRE? Go study and take the MCAT. Apply to SMP programs and/or DO schools afterwards.

I am considering using my gap year to pursue an MPH. I am planning to look into SMPs as well.

You seriously need to some more reading/thinking, and ignore the *****s over in pre-allo

Realize that almost all MPH programs (I can only think of one that isn't) are going to be at least 3 semesters long. Its pretty hard to finish off 48 credits, a practicum, and a dissertation in one calendar year. So if you're going that route, know that its going to take 2 years.

Also, know that med schools put little to no emphasis on your graduate public health GPA, and doing well in public health will not remedy ugpa issues. This coming straight from a dean of admissions.

Agreed with everyone. Take the MCAT buddy and you'll get in somewhere.
