  1. Pre-Dental
So far, college has been a roller coaster ride for me. I am a junior biology major (I don't really know why bio when I'm so bad at it). I am really just wondering if I should apply this June.

My cGPA is not good at all, it is a flat 3.0 and my sGPA is 2.9. My DAT scores were AA 20 TS 20 PAT 19

I am done my junior year and this year was supposed to be a GPA booster, but that NEVER goes as planned.

Realistically, I feel like an average applicant with those numbers, if not less than average.

The main school I want to get into is Temple; I have a student worker job there which is a decent pull I have. Other than that, I want to apply to NYU, TUFTS, UPitt, WVU, Howard, Boston U, and maybe USC.

I feel like I do not have enough schools to apply to and I want to know if I should apply anywhere else?
Will I get interviews at any of these schools with those numbers and where?
Is there anything else I need to do?

Dentistry has been a dream of mine ever since 8th grade where we had a careers class and had to do a class project. Ever since, I have no looked back. I know my DAT score and GPA are neither outstanding, but I want to hold onto a little bit of hope before giving up.

Where are you getting your undergrad?

You can always do a post-bacc to get your overall GPA up, and even take the DAT again 🙂

How are your extra curriculars?

Personally, I'd say save your money and apply after doing a master's or post-bacc. I had a similar gpa and lower DAT (19 AA) when I graduated from undergrad, so I did a two year master's that I absolutely loved and was accepted December 1st into my dream school. If you apply now, I'd assume you'd probably get zero interviews. There's a chance you'd get one, but I know people with higher stats who don't even get an interview their first application cycle. I really hate to say that and am not trying to be mean, but my extra-curriculars were better than anyone else I know, I had a 4.0 master's gpa, and I still only had one interview. Save the thousands of dollars you'd spend applying this cycle, and get your science gpa above a 3.0. Most schools won't accept you without a 3.0 science gpa (though some will). That's just my two cents. Best of luck to you!

The truth hurts! But that's what I was looking for.

I am considering Temple's new post-bac program. I do understand my GPA is low. I took my DATs last summer (2014), if I do post bac's in 2016, I would definitely need to take the DAT's again, correct?

You might not have to retake your DAT. It's good for up to 3 years. So if you took the DAT on lets say 8/31/2014 then you'd have until 8/31/2017 to reapply with that DAT. Though if you kick butt in your post-bac you might be able to do even better on your DAT and that could help you.

Here's some additional advice you didn't ask for, but it may be helpful. Since I had a low gpa, the best advice I can give anyone is to do a post-bacc or a masters. If you're anything like me, then you probably aren't supremely confident in your abilities right now because you've been wanting to get better grades. My graduate work helped me regain the confidence to succeed and I hope it does the same for you, if that's what you need. Cause I felt like out of undergrad I might have been able to be accepted to dental school, but then I would've struggled once I got there. Now I know that I'm going to thrive.

Actually, some schools only accept DAT scores for 2 years. I was just looking at a school yesterday that was like that.... unfortunately I can't remember which school it was :O
