I am looking at doing HPSP through either Army or Air Force. Can anyone help me determine how likely it will be for me to obtain an emergency medicine residency? I see there are only 2 programs in the AF and 3 in the Army. How many people compete for these spots? How badly does the military need MD's in this specialty? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As for the Air Force, I can't speak. The Army, however, has its information available online. I tried to get the exact URL this morning but the Army site is acting funny. Go to the FYGME pages and search around a little. The information for HPSP, USHS, and ROTC students getting their residency choices is in there. I don't know if it has specific numbers for specific residencies. At the very least you will be able to find out where you can go for these residencies and call them.

hope it helps,

Geo

You are correct that the Air Force only has two residency programs one is at Wilford Hall in San Antonio, the other is a combined program with wright-state university EM program. EM has turned into a fairly competitive specialty from everything I have heard. I too am interested in EM and will be attending USUHS next year...the results of this years match for the Air Force can be found at this address:

one thing you would have going for you as an HPSP is that you can also apply for civilian residencies so there is a possibility that you could match there. As far as Emergency medicine docs in the Air Force, there are only a handfull of AF hospitals with Emergency Departments left, most of the hospitals have become "super clinics" and done away with their inpatient wards and ED's. So while I can't tell you exact numbers I would have to say that there isn't a huge demand for EM docs in the AF. Here at Keesler AFB where I am currently stationed, they keep between 7-10 ER docs on staff. And like I said there are only a handful of other Air Force hospitals with ER's (probably around 15). I count 16 matches in EM this year, not a huge number but definitely do-able also. You might try calling the director of the EM residency at Wilford Hall, I couldn't find the number for him/her directly but the number for hospital info is (210)292-7412, I'm sure they'd be able to answer any of your questions. Hope this helped and best of luck!
