Hi everyone! So I started as Pre-med but I'm struggling so much with the MCAT I'm considering Podiatry now! My cGPA is 3.85 sGPA is 3.75 and I got an 18 on the MCAT my first try, which was an improvement from my first practice test (13). And I've just started my junior year so I've got all year to prepare to take it again next summer! But what would you guys say my chances are with my current GPA and MCAT score? Thanks in advance for any help! 😀

Just get your MCAT up to 22 or so and you're good. First time I took a practice test I got 18 I studied for about 5 weeks and got 29 on the real thing. Good luck

Don't consider Podiatry just because you're having difficulty with the MCAT. That's a horrible reason to pick a profession! Pick Podiatry because you're seriously interested in the field. Otherwise I fear you're going to be miserable.

Don't use Podiatry as a backup. You have a year to prepare. Using your gpa as an indicator there is no reason that with on and off studying for a year you can't break a 26+.

Also what school do you attend? An mcat score of 13 literally means you got about 75 percent of the test wrong. With your gpa you should know more of the sciences than that.

The first time around, how long did you take to study for your MCAT?
Were you studying for other things?

Maybe that might be a factor as to why you didn't do as well as you wanted?

I did the princeton review course but didn't put nearly enough time I needed to into it outside of the class and didn't do most of the homework, but I slowly improved and now I'm planning on studying throughout this school year and get a better score next summer

When you do improve your MCAT grade make sure you understand what podiatry is. Not just read the forum and a few things online, go find a podiatrist and observe them. Going by the logic " My MCAT is not high enough for anything else" is looking for trouble.

I agree with advise. Podiatry is a kxckxss profession, but you need to know why it's awesome. I think I learned the most while shadowing. I also shadowed a Primary Care Physician, and knew I would be happier hacking at foot bones, and wrapping wounds - then being PCP. Maybe a MD surgeon would be to my liking, but there is no guarantee what specialty you will be after med school. As a DPM I know exactly what I will be doing.

Yes our specialty will be feet, maybe ankle included for some of us. Some people may truly hate having to do that everyday, day in and day out. I could see myself happy and thriving.

First, definitely try to score higher than an 18 on the real thing. I had a series of events that led me to that score on my actual MCAT and I have two interviews now, but I will most likely need to retake it before a full acceptance is given to me. I plan on being asked several questions about it at my interviews.

Second, don't go into podiatry because you are struggling to do something else, go into podiatry because you enjoy the profession. I am applying to podiatry schools because I have done my research, shadowed several DPM's and found that this is the field for me. Saying "I started out as pre-med but struggled on the MCAT so I decided that podiatry is the field for me," will not impress anyone in admissions, and in fact may insult them.

idk but i think a lot of you are reading the OP wrong . He got an 18 on the actual test ... the 13 was on the practice test.
