Any comments? I'm 32 female with masters in Speech Path. 3.89 in graduate classes,3.99 in undergrad classes. 7 years working in hospital setting but only an 8 avg. on the MCAT. What are my chances if any getting into D.O. school? What schools might I have the best shot at?
Thanks

If that 8 is composite, then no chance in hell......if that 8 is average, then you'd be at least in the "acceptable range."

Thanks--- 8 Avg. Any suggestions on who would accept that type of score?

The best thing to do is call the schools directly and see what there average is.

I believe that your experience and good GPA will help you over the 24 MCAT score.

If you are going to apply.. do it quickly. Interviews have already begun.
Good luck...

KCOM, NSUCOM, AZCOM.. seem to like mature students.. that is what they told me anyway.

Is it even possible to score an 8 on the MCAT? The lowest score I've ever known or heard of has been 17.

I believe that the OP said 8 avg...meaning a score in the 24 range.

I strongly believe that a lot of DO schools like the "older" more seasoned applicant because they bring a unique sense of diversity to the class. Your background in speech path and 7 yrs of hospital experience would definately be enticing for the adcom to invite you for an interview. The only thing you would definately have to be clear on is why you have decided to change careers and pursue the field of medicine.

The score of 8 on average is not excellent, but it is the nation's average. So, I think you have a descent shot.

All this said, what was your major for UG? Also, how many years of grad school did you have to go to for speech path? (i.e. is it a masters or doctorate) These factors will also weigh in on your GPA. A lot, no, most med schools rank the BCPM GPA above everything else, so hopefully you will still have that strong GPA even after you have calculated the BCPM GPA.

You guys are all too troll-sensitive. This lady said 8 average-I didn't consider the alternative because I don't even comprehend how someone could score an 8 overall-seems like one could just randomly fill in the grid and do that well.

To the OP-your chances are excellent to get in. Although you are applying a little late if you are just starting now. Good luck.

True, true...but there's a reason why we're troll-sensitive.

To the OP: if your stats are true, your chances are good.

I think you have a good shot at DO schools. You should turn in your applications asap so you can take advantage of early application.

To work independently as a Speech-Language Pathologist/SLP (CCC=Certificate of Clinical Competence), you need to have a Masters. An undergraduate degree in SLP can be obtained, however, you are more likely to find work as an SLP assistant. The MS or MA, depending on where one goes and which classes one takes, is generally 2 years with the second year starting in the summer after 1st year and finishing off fall and spring semesters.

To the OP...I think you have a good chance...Just be sure to fully and completely explain you reasoning and thought process as to chosing medicine and mainly your interest in osteopathic medicine. On your essays, both primary and secondary, emphasize thoughts, feelings, and emotions with specific events or experiences that led you to persue medicine. REMEMBER, stats and numbers as well as your volunteer, EC, and work history are already on your application and can be viewed by interviewers and the adcoms. What they can't see are the individual and "powerful" events in those lists that helped shape your thought and decision making processes. Use the essays to your advantage! Good luck! 🙂

apply soon....and apply to UNECOM. 🙂

cause .. maybe they like Mature applicants.. or applicant changing fields as yourself.

Did you contact any of the DO schools and asked them what they prefer.. or like to see. Or best.. their opinion on applicants as yourself? You should definitely do that before you apply ... that way you can say you heard it from the source. Actually SDN seems to be an excellent source.

I wasted some money applying to 3 schools (aacomas + suppl). these are now places I would definitely not go to.

Best of Luck

My guess is your chances are excellent, actually. btw what's your science gpa?
I'm also a non-trad. and I've done an exhaustive search on schools...UNECOM, OUCOM, and DMU are the ones I like the most
