I posted this in another site but I'd like to have more comments.

I have 5 repeat classes. AMCAS gpa is something like 3.0 and AACOMAS gpa is about 3.5. My MCAT score is 36R (v11, b12, p13). My question: should I just apply for DO schools and forget about MD schools?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I'd say your DO chances are very favorable. As for the MD schools, it's your choice, but if you want to invest the money, it's your call. I don't think it would hurt to throw a few applications out there to broaden your prospects and find a school that really fits you (the MCAT will really help show that you've improved over past academic performance)

The trolldar is going off....but....apply broadly and you should be fine for both DO and MD.

If you apply MD make sure you email them in advance and ask if they have certain GPA cutoffs. I really don't mean to sound discouraging, just trying to save you money. Apply early, apply broadly, apply smart. Call the schools and ask their opinions if you can.

Good luck.

do not apply DO if u are not 100% comfortable with it..simple as that..its a career move that will stick with you forever..ever considered carribean?

Thanks for all the advises.

I know the perception is MD sounds better and the fact is MD is harder to get. But at this point, getting accepted into DO program is as good as MD for me. It seems after residency, there's really no difference except the title. All I read about is the debate on MD/DO is only among pre-meds. Both programs are all rigorous.

I probably will not try carribean.

let me ask you something, you are so quick to say if your not 100% don't go to do school, why are you doing "DO"?

I dont think he is saying that "HE" himself is not 100% comfortable with it. But he is advising the other student to be 100% sure himself/herself before applying to DO schools. =)

With your STats ohus123, I wouldn't go to carribean school. They have a very tough time at landing residency spots and even 4yr clerkships sometimes. You are right though, NOT a big difference between practices of MD/DO, but with an MD degree from a US school, you do have more options during residency pick time.

Have some DO acceptances. Just a few days ago, got accepted by an MD school. The whole process was grueling.

Keep trying everyone and never give up!

Thank you all

With a 36 I'd apply to both. You've demonstrated that you can handle the material, but definitely expect to have the gpa questioned. Remember to just take responsibility and not to make excuses or be defensive because you have proved yourself with the mcat. Good luck.
