Chances of Med School with my MCAT/GPA??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Uh, what? Are you talking about verbal, or for every section? Cause I didn't even read the passages when I took it. How's that for quick reading?

Primarily for verbal but it will help for every section. There is still text in the science sections even if it's not as dense as the verbal section.

2.7 Science GPA
3.2 Overall GPA
32O on my MCATs

I am in my last year of undergrad. I might have to stay another year to bring up that science GPA but if I was to apply with these stats, do I have a shot?

Thanks in advance!

There's always a shot, but you are quite a bit below average on the ol' GPA, especially the science GPA. A 32 is a grand MCAT score, just above average, but it might not be enough to compensate for the GPA.

If you have the money, toss out a few apps.

does the individual sections stack like the SAT's do? Would his overall score be considered a 29? or is it just the best result from one sitting?

I hope some schools consider the best of each section, that would be great. I've heard of schools doing that. Not sure which ones though, anyone have any idea?

so its not very likely. damn! well what are my other options?

Your low GPA will get you screened before most allopathic schools even seriously consider your application, that said, you probably have a shot at some DO programs. You should check that out if you are serious about becoming a doctor, in the mean time I would try and get my science GPA to at least 3.0 even for the DO schools.

I know that Utah does, but I don't know of any others.

what bout georgetown smp program?

if i raised my science gpa to 3.0 what are my chances at that?

What I have heard if either of your GPA's is under 3.0 you can pretty much be screened out of interviews. Hopefully you can pull that up to a 3.0 or have a very good reason why it is so low (illness, family issues, etc)... DO would be a better option cuz your MCAT is solid its just the GPA that is really sub par

Is this site helpful at all? If you are out of state, it subtracts points at private schools that show no preference for residency. What's with that. By the way, I am a mechanical engineering major with a "3.4, 34" (rolls right off your tongue 🙂), so i'm panicking with the rest of the people on this thread.

No, that site is pretty much useless. If you put in 2.3/40, it will say you are competitive for lots of schools. That's just not true. Sure, you may be lucky and score an interview, but you are definitely never out of the danger zone with such a low GPA. As you mentioned, the state reisdency thing is another ridiculous facet of how they match your score with a school's score.

I'd only see it being useful for getting average GPA and MCAT scores of schools by clicking on "Get Details." Still, I can't confirm if their details are the same numbers in last year's MSAR (since I don't have one).

my cgpa: ~ 3.7, will hopefully raise it to around 3.75 by the time I graduate God willing.
MCAT = 32Q
do I have any chance in US as an international student? If yes then which colleges?

Most people here don't know how easy/hard it is to get in as an int'l student; try doing a search, I'm sure it's been discussed before. With that said, your numbers exceed the averages of 99% of schools, so hopefully you find a thread that lists "int'l friendly," applicants.

Just to give you some perspective, below is the most recent listing of Medical School Admission Statistics from US News.

The first few %'s are admission rates for different groups of ppl (total, men, women, minorities, etc). The first number after that is the average GPA. The next four numbers after that are the average MCAT scores by test section followed by the average section score (average of phys. sci, verbal, and bio sci). The letter at the end of the line is the verbal score.

Your stats are good, but they're lower than the average for the top 20 schools.

In my honest opinion, you'll need much higher scores to have a decent shot at a US medical school if you're an international applicant.
