Hi everyone!

I am an M1 wondering about applying outside my school for summer research internships. I am wondering what the chances are of publication after just doing a summer internship. I have had extensive bench research in the past, so I know that kind of research will take 1-2 years for a publication. How about the chances for publication from clinical research for just the summer?

Otherwise, I feel like I should just stay at my home institution for the summer for research, and then continue more smoothly into M2 year.

Thanks! Happy holidays and enjoy!

It depends on what lab, attending, residents, other med students, institution, productivity, what phase of projects they are currently in (eg data collection from the scratch vs data analysis of an already established database, etc.), how many other ongoing research projects you can help out to become co-authors, etc.

Usually, people expect to get at least one poster presentation out of "just doing a summer internship" and if they are lucky, even one publication. But there are definitely outliers at both ends (eg not even a single poster vs multiple publications).
