I have a 3.5 overall GPA and a 3.4 Science GPA (i was a bio major)....I also have worked as a dental assistant since the age of 14 (im 23 now so i have 1000s of hours worth of experience). MY problem is my DAT score....i have an AA of 18 and an PAT score of 16.....i just can't seem to get any higher....I was wondering if you guys think i have any chance to get it

You know what... you're almost there. Just raise the AA at least by 1-2 points, and the PAT by 2-4 points and you're in a much better position.

How many times have you taken the DAT? You can bring it up a few points!

I've taken it 3 times... i can't seem to do any higher.....i was never good at these types of tests. I was hoping that my GPA and my experience could make up for it- plus my dad being an donating alumni can't hurt

And now working a job full time i doubt i could really study effectively

Did you get an interview yet? If you've interview, i would say you have a decent chance, last year NYU interviewed 183 predents and accepted 137 (predents=people from predents.com). So it seems like quite a few people are getting admitted.
If you haven't been interviewed, it maybe hard because it's so late into the cycle.

i havent been interviewed yet...i just got the notification that my application was complete

abmand, since you haven't interviewed, i think it'll be tougher, though not impossible. However, if things don't work out this cycle, apply early next cycle and you'll most likely get interviewed.
How much do you family donate to NYU?

i have no idea to be honest....its not like a crazy number or anything like that

Give them a call. Let them know you are interested. They will interview many people post dec.

does anyone know roughly what percentage of seats are given out to people with pre-dec interviews?

are there still many acceptances after december?

Woah.. NOT a good thing to say... In other words: "I will struggle with the NBDE".

I applied last year with an 18 and did not get in. If dentistry is really what you want to do, leave all your doubt behind and study harder than you have in the past. There are plenty of threads on this site that outline successful DAT strategy. There are people who get in with an 18 score and less, but trend is going the other direction.

My AADSAS mailing date was 7/17 and I have heard nothing from them. I have 3.5 GPA 3.4 Sci 19AA DAT. Did my application just fall through the cracks and went unnoticed or am I not that competitive?

My app was completed in late August, and got an interview for a September date. So, they might inertview in random order.

NYU won't interview anyone without 100+ hours of shadowing

Woah.. NOT a good thing to say... In other words: "I will struggle with the NBDE".

I know what you're saying, but from what I understand the NBDE will be P/F so it takes a lot of stress off for getting a top score.

Does anyone know if NYU accepts students with less than 100 hours of shadowing?

I read somewhere on their site (can't seem to find it now 🙁 ) that they required a minimum of 100 hours... Like I said I can't find it now, so I might have been imagining it. But all I know is that I have a buddy with better stats than me (a lot better... got interviewed at Penn) with the same amount of volunteer work but had around 50ish hours of shadowing and he didn't get an interview. I'm not trying to steer anyone in the wrong direction so I apologize if this information isn't completely accurate. You may want to call admissions and ask for their requirements.

I have an interview at NYU this year and I only have 35ish shadowing hours.

to the original poster...

show them that you want to get in!!!!! !!! !!!!!!!!! (got the point?)

Call them to casually check on your status, stop by saying" i was just in the clinic and decided to come up here and check on my app". Start volunteering!!!

Anything to stay on their mind (dont be obnoxious though).

i applied to the 7 year ba/dds with a 20AA and 18TS and did not get in last year. this year my stats are a bit better and its regular adm. fingers crossed.

Now the level of studying between say scoring a 95% on the NBDE and just pass/fail is HUGE. But still, passing that test is no stressless task. I met an indian guy last summer @ the library, he was an international dentist and wanted to get into Detroit Mercy's international program, he was showing me how much material he was using for NBDE and OHHH MYYYY GOSHHHHHHH, I am not exadurating when I say this, take your DAT study material and multiply it by 10.

To answer dentalworks question

Oh... my bad

abmand~
Lets look at the goods vs bads in your application:
Goods
-good GPA
-great exposure to the field
-father being donating alumni (Like Harvey Dent says "can't hurt your chances")

Bads
-18 AA isn't too bad, but you've taken the test 3 times, they will see that and think you should have improved, But in my opinion, I don't think its an application killer

Improvements
If your working right now, I say quit your job and try to 4.0 every course your taking. Remember, GPA upward trend has its weight in gold, so since I don't think you should ever retake your DAT again, the only thing that can REALLY improve your changes is to improve that GPA. Obviously I am lookin at worse case scenario here (that being = they reject you this year), if you wanna have a stronger chance for next cycle, from this day on, try to 4.0 all your courses.

Another thing you can do is to write a KILLER, I mean, the stuff of legends personal statement, tell them how you've always been in love with this profession since the age of 14 and blah blah blah (I am not a good writter, I hope you are).

Good luck to you

I know what you're saying, but from what I understand the NBDE will be P/F so it takes a lot of stress off for getting a top score.

Please read the specifically bolded quote... It was meant for the OP to avoid bringing that sentence up in future interviews etc.

NBDE is headed that direction.. it's not there yet.

Can we really do this?

Can we really do this?

i dont see why not. you have a full right to ask if they have all of the stuff from you. as long as you are not being annoying or "fake" about this I think i wouldn't be frowned upon

realistically you just need to retake the DAT and really study to bring up your score. the fact that you've taken the test three times and haven't improved your scores means that you're having some serious trouble with these types of test. in my opinion this is the big red mark on your application the rest of your stuff is fine you just need to fix this one thing.

As much as i hate to admit this, it's true that schools are looking for people who will be able to do well on standardize tests. They KNOW it's not a good measure of a person's performance, HOWEVER, dental students have to take their NBDEs, if the student struggles on the DAT, dental students will wonder how that student will pass the boards.

Browse the DAT forum and get some study tips if you plan on a retake. Good luck

I don't think stats are really holding OP back, it's more likely that his late app submission is the culprit. NYU does a lot of post-Dec interviews from what I hear, wouldn't worry too much.

I am against the idea of him/her retaking DAT. I know currently his 3 DATs are kinda putting him in a bad spot, but he somewhat has a chance. If he takes the DAT a 4th time and gets similar scores, thats just putting the final nail on the coffin and in my opinion, he'll never get into NYU or any other school.

Of course, if he takes the DAT a 4th time and rocks it, its going to help him a great deal but judging from how hes been performing on the last 3 and how his attitude is towards the whole thing "i was never good at these types of tests".... leads me to conclude that his chances to perform poorly are somewhat higher than him performing superb

If he doesn't get in this cycle, best he can do is raise his GPA and try next cycle.

To the OP ~ This is your future, you don't have to listen to the few of us here and decide, instead, you should contact the school and get to know thier adcoms and most importantly, ask them for advice and in doing so this will build some people relations. this could help you a great deal.

dont believe you see on predents
i went for my inetrveiw at NYU and they interview 600 ppl and accept about ~230

plus a lot of ppl arent on predents, like me 😉

but is it good to see their stats

p.s. for that kid who took their DAT 3x over--how did u study??use DAT destroyer and maybe get a PAT tutor!!

Whoa what??? NYU's class size is approximately 230. You are way off. They will probably accept around 400 students. Not off the bat of course.

I agree, that we shouldn't take everything we see on predents, however i am convinced that predents is a good representation of the applicant pool, there are probably around 15000-2000 people applying and predents has about 1000 users, which is a quite significant portion. 😀

i thought so too..but doc toothaches thread says they accepted over 600 last cycle (garnered from the adea handbook). i guess a lot of people turn them down

Haha, yea I actually think you are right. I guess I said 400 as a safe response to the other poster's suggestion that they accept 230.

Personally I think that predents shows the upper eschelon of the dental applicants. These are the people who have enough confidence in there application to share it with the world... btw, there's always those "stat-padders" too. Don't worry too much about predents, although in overall it's probably the best source of that kind of info... aside from doc toothache of course

And i personally think that predents is just the middle-of-the-pack dental applicants because the strong applicants are usually too busy with their school work or actually have lives and aren't full of themselves like us, who go and create predents profile he he.😀

i agree with you. people that are more confident with their applicatio tend to get on predents(my thoughts). i have many friends with 17-19 who dont even know about predents

what are your stats?, if you dont mind me asking?

YES the class size for the first year is ~230, both the admissions director and the dean said so. and then ~150 ( i think) is AP(advanced placement)

have you had your NYU interview yet?

I know their class size is 230. With that fact in mind, I'm saying they will have to accept between 500-600 people. I'm not sure if we are on the same page here. I thought you were saying they only accept 230 people in your previous post. Yea, I interviewed in early October.

this is a common story there are hundreds of people with 19 DAT and avg grades. there are 4000 people applying!! there are enough people with high DATs and good scores out there. if you haven't heard from interviews from any schools yet you need to be looking at your application to see whats wrong with it and think about next year. there is a nail in the coffin this year if you havent gotten any interviews yet im not saying give up hope there is always the stray optimistic story of someone your friend knows that got in with an 18 and a 3.0 but you seriously need to be thinking about next year and how to improve not work with the same stuff that didnt get you in the first two years.
For NYU maximum capacity is 250 no more thats all they have room for.

goodluck, hope you get in
have you interviewed anywhere else yet?
or been invited?
Yea, Louisville, UNC, and Tennessee. So my waiting game continues throughout the week. Louisville is the only school i'll hear from tonight. I'm not getting my hopes up. Good luck to you too. Are you just waiting to hear from NYU, or others too?
