Chances with low Step 1?

I was wondering if my chances are good of getting into a PM&R program in NYC or anywhere in CA is with a Step 1 score of 213? My 3rd year clerkships have so far been high passes. I plan on taking step 2 early as well, but don't expect the score to be significantly higher. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

In my opinion, that score will not hurt you in the slightest. I dont think it will greatly enhance your chances either. As a PGY-4 at a CA program I have seen alot of applications and helped (a bit) with the ranking process. Programs will be more concerned with other things such as good letters, your personality during the interview, why PM+R, visiting rotations, real life experiences etc etc. Those are the things that will separate yourself from others. I saw many huge board scores but the personality wasnt a fit or they said during the interview that ALL THEY WANTED TO DO WAS PAIN MNGMNT (a definite no-no at many programs). Your board scores are FINE. Dont worry about them and good luck.

213 is not low. The average for U.S. grads who matched into PM&R was 208, and for "all others" it was even less.

You will get many interviews at many top spots, including California. Do a few pm&r rotations, even 1 or 2 at outside institutions and you will be GOLDEN. Don't worry. 👍

I got a 190 on step 1 and a 223 on step 2. I had 7 PM&R interviews this year and already heard back from 2 university programs that they are ranking me very high.
As long as your Step 2 score is solid you'll be fine.

Be careful .. the same way applicants tell more than one program they are making them their top choice, there are programs that tell more people than they can take they are ranking them "very highly" .... assume nothing

ABSOLUTELY!!!!

Everytime you here someone say "we are ranking you high on our list", think to yourself, "we are looking to pad our statistics for no other reason than bragging rights, and if you get screwed, your loss!"

I have seen waaaaaayyyyyy too many med students get screwed by this.
