Other than walking and hitch hiking, what's the cheapest way to travel from LaGuardia airport to NYU? shuttle? public transit?

This may not address your question directly, but I remember visiting Chicago earlier this year for the ACS convention... it was over $40 for the cab ride from the airport to the hotel, and it was $2 to ride the public transit. I would think your situation would be analogous, though I don't know if cabs are always 2000% more expensive.

Supershuttle is a service that goes from LaGuardia and drops you off to your location (NYU)...typically runs between 15-20 bucks....maybe a discount for students...not quite sure...worth a phone call to find out....also you can take a bus from LaGuardia and get onto a subway stop....it's the Q33 bus that goes from the terminal to the Jackson Heights stop where you transfer to the R train going to manhattan....you get off at 23rd Street in Manhattan and walk about 6 avenues to NYU....that costs a total of $2.....

honestly.... if u have never been to NY..... just spend the extra money and take the cab. If your traveling alone then i would say take a cab. I live like 10 miles north of uptown and i never ride public transit. Some lines are not safe and I rather spend my money. It is always money well spent.

it will be the same price of a cab, about 40 which is not alot because it wont make you pay for the tolls which are about 8 or so (maybe more)... take a black town car they are waiting when you walk out of the airport... they are clean and comfortable... that is what i always to

There is a bus service. NYAS that is right outside the terminal. You buy a ticket from the dude in a vest and a bus leaves every 30 min. I got off at Port Authority Station which is the main station in the middle of downtown NY. Its 21 dollars round trip or 12 single trip. You can then take the city bus (MTA) M16 to campus. Get off at 23rd and 2nd and you be really close

Public transit is your cheapest way = $2. You can buy a Metrocard at those "Hudson News" stands in the airport BEFORE you get on the bus. It will involve a combination of leaving LGA on a bus and switching to a subway to get to NYU. It can be confusing if you haven't done it before, but I see tourists getting on the bus all the time. Actually, the route sonylarkhi described is probably the least confusing route because if you get on the Q33 bus at the airport, then you get off at the very last stop (20 minute ride in no traffic). This is the Jackson Heights subway station, a huge station and there is no chance of confusion by getting off at the wrong bus stop since it is the last stop. Lots of people get off at this stop. Once you get on the R train toward Manhattan (ask around to make sure you're not getting on the train going the opposite direction toward Queens, it can be confusing) then you just have to watch the signs at each stop to make sure you get off at 23rd St. in Manhattan (about a 20 - 30 minute ride, at least 12 stops, don't get off at 23 St-Ely Ave b/c this is still in Queens and NOT your stop). When you get out of the subway, you should ask to have someone point you toward 1st Avenue and walk the rest of the way to NYU (10 - 15 minutes).

Definitely look the route up online at the MTA website to be familiar with where you are traveling.

Of course a cab will get you there in 25 minutes door to door (no traffic) but just cost about 20 times more. If you have lots of time on your hands like at least 2 hours, I'd do the public transit otherwise I'd take the cab.

How much is the cab from JFK?

thanks alot! I hope its the same price if there are two people....I am bringing a friend along...

JFK to anywhere in Manhattan is a flat rate of $45, plus an extra $5 for a toll.

If you are adventurous, you can take the M60 ($2, has to be in change) bus to Astoria Blvd., from there take the N subway train (another $2) into Manhattan and transfer onto correct train to NYU once in Manhattan. It's really not a hard subway system; I was just in NY for a wedding and found it to be on par with other metro systems I have ridden.

I took a cab from Waterside Apartment which is a block away (3 min walk from NYU) to Laguardia airport. It cost me $38 which included generous tips and a toll fee 6 days ago. YMMV

Cab wasn't that bad when I went. I think it was around 30ish.

when I went, I hopped on a random bus into manhattan (It may have been the M60) and did a transfer to a bus stop near my hotel which was about a 3 minute walk. I asked the bus driver what to do and she was very helpful. Total cost can be about 2 dollars (maybe 10 more dollars if you don't want to walk. I took a cab to my hotel from the bus stop because it was really cold)

👍👍👍 Used this and it worked out great. Word of caution if you use it on the way back though. Plan on getting to the airport early! The shuttle didn't come until like 15 mins past their schedule time and they stop at pretty much every hotel on the way back to the airport. Definitely the way to go for the trip in though.

edit: rofl, didn't check date of OP

Subway isn't really that hard to work out if you preplan it. But if you are nervous/stressed, it sounds like the shuttle will be the easier, more straightforward way to go. Enjoy the city!
