as you all probably know pharmacy technicians (and others in the pharmacy) have to learn how to check a DEA number. i was wondering if any of you actually look at a prescription and check the DEA number or have something on the computer to give you an alert if there's something wrong with the DEA number. i've asked other pharmacy students at my school, and they said they didn't really check those when they were technicians.

Our computer checked it automatically. We would get warnings if we typed it in wrong.

Do you know how to check?

It's the first, third, and fifth numbers + the second, fourth, and sixth numbers multiplied by two... in other words [1+3+5 + [2x(2+4+6)]]

Whatever answer you get, the second number should be the same as the last number of the DEA.

So if your total was 42, the last number of the DEA should be a 2.

The newer computers at big chains check the algorithm automatically.

Me? I go with AB1111119 every time.
