I'm not too deep into Cheesy LY, so before the point of no return....

Which one is more recommended? I wish I had started one of them at the start of 1st year..... but better to start now I guess than later.

Thanks!

Im using original Lightyear. People on this site will say anking for the simple fact that it has been around longer.

Anking is just a reorganized zanki with all the errata removed and better tagging for all the cards. Technically, the creation of anking is recent, but it utilizes the older decks. I prefer anking just because of the organization and current support for the deck. People are continuously working on it.

It's really because Zanki is more proven than Lightyear. I mean, Bros has been around longer than Zanki, but no one's really running that. Once Zanki came on the scene, it took over. Lightyear didn't do the same to Zanki. There are just way, way more success stories with it. There's a kind of security in that. Also, a lot of people just prefer the style of Zanki over Lightyear.

Right, its been around longer and ergo should have more success stories. But there have been multitudes of successful people that used LY as well. I think Zanki is getting out of hand tbh. It started as a deck with like 25k cards or something and people were wildly successful with it then, now it has 33k and growing every update. I think in all honesty, you get about the same information out of both pending learning style. Zanki has more information and LY is more concise for memorization. Doing either will wildly prepare you and put you ahead of your peers and in a place to be successful for boards.

I don't understand how being around longer correlates to having more success stories. Firecracker has been around longer than Zanki and it has far less success stories.

Zanki originally started at like 17K cards, really. As it got more comprehensive, it naturally got larger. Different strokes for different folks. Some people like a big comprehensive deck, others like a small, bare bones deck.

I do agree that the latest versions of both decks are almost completely comprehensive, but the latest version of Lightyear is 27K, so it's not far off from Zanki.

I also agree that you won't be held back by either deck; your decision should largely be based on preference.

33k cards may not be worth it. After finishing zanki, some of that time could have been better spent doing Qbank questions. If I could go back to the start of M2, I would have done a combination of lolnotacop, pepper pathoma, and zanki pharm. The rest of the time would be spent on video resources of choice, a pass of FA, and getting through multiple Q banks + UW before dedicated with my own cards on incorrects. This may be an unpopular opinion but keep in mind that everyone learns/applies differently and ultimately, you must pave your own path of efficiency.

Have you tried amboss on your journey?

People always say questions >>>>>> Anki, and it's like yeah, that's true, if we're looking at these resources in isolation. The truth is, the utilization of them in tandem is synergistic. If you plan well, you can do the whole of Zanki and multiple qbanks, increasing your chances of scoring well.

I didn't try amboss, but I hear it's a good resource and is challenging. I did their free self assessment way before dedicated and felt like the tested topics were low yield. My school gave us Kaplan, UW, and combank, and I also purchased usmlerx so I didn't end up needing more Q banks beyond those. Rx was helpful for reinforcing zanki/FA and doing subject specific blocks for weak topics, I didn't get through much of kaplan but didn't find it especially good or bad. I did use some of the kaplan review books (got them for free as well) to skim over weak pharm/physio.

I'm a first-year DO student but I am still waiting to start anking until I've covered more material in class and from other resources. Would it be a good idea just to start from the top of anking or try and look through and pick cards as I go through sketchy, pathoma, and Costanzo?

Definitely pick cards as you go through class and the associated materials, and be sure to continue reviewing cards as you go throughout pre-clinical! If you can do this for the next 2 years, you'll be in a good spot for Step 1 regardless if it actually becomes P/F or not.
