Hi,

Is it okay to take a premed class (General Chem II) over the summer or should I take it this semester? I was also wondering if I took General Chem II over the summer, do you think I would be adequately prepared for organic chem next year?

Thanks!

i took chem II over the summer and then followed the next semester with organic. it's fine. you really need essentially nothing from general chemistry to do organic chemsitry.

Yup. My undergrad school recommends that we take our physics and/or physiology during the summer. Chem II shouldn't be any different.

Classes are always easier in the summer, take it then. That's what I did with Orgo II, Physics II, and Calc II. I 4.0'ed them all as opposed to the 3.0, 3.5, and B- I had in the first series respectively.

Try to do it at your current institution though because some schools don't like you taking your premed classes elsewhere (at CC for instance).

Thanks so much for all your advice, I really appreciate it. I just had one more question, would medical schools look down on the fact that I took it over the summer?

No. Not at all. Put yourself in the shoes of the admissions committee with thousands of applications to look over and the following line from an application:

ASTUDENT CEM 252 Intro to Organic Chemistry II Summer 04 Grade 4.0

They're trained to see: AStudent/OrgoII/4.0

Thanks once again. This is just a random question, but would it be easier to get a higher grade in organic chem over the summer?

I agree with the above posters that it's easier to take some of your premed requirements over the summer. However, be sure to keep in mind that summer is a great opportunity to do some awesome ECs or research which could add individuality and strength to your application. Summer classes at most universities are condensed, meaning you literally eat, sleep, and breath Orgo/Chem/Bio/etc. If you really think you're going to have a tough time with a class, then by all means take it over the summer -- I just wouldn't recommend spending every summer taking classes (you may miss out on some really great opportunities).

I also worked in a research lab for 2 summers while taking my classes. Use your other free time in the summer making yourself stand out.

That's definitely true. And I was thinking of doing research this summer but I don't think that I could actually contribute anything meaningful since I don't have an extensive science background. But I would like to do something interesting, do have any suggestions for what I could do? (I am a freshman) Once again, thanks for the advice and insight.

Medical schools don't expect you to cure cancer in a summer. You just need to volunteer to work in a lab (like you did in the hospital) to show the adcom that you would like to continue research in the future.
