Mn has [Ar]4s2 3d5, and V has [Ar]4s2 3d3

Then... why does Mn2+ have [Ar]3d5 instead of [Ar]4s2 3d3

Kaplan says its cuz of aufbau principle but I don't get it...

This is how you think about it.

The 4s is lower than the 3d dont let the numbers fool you. so it takes less energy to remove electrons from the lower level than the higher level. Thats why the two electrons are removed from the 4s 1st.
