If the activation energy for a reaction in the forward direction is 96KJ the activation energy for the reaction in reverse is 295KJ and the energy of the product is 34KJ. The energy of the reactants is?

the correct answer is 233KJ/mole

to reach the 233, solution count delta H is negative 199

on the problem above, why Delta H is (-)199?
I am wondering why negative 199, instead of positve 199

delta H is neg 199 because it asks for the ENERGY of REACTANTS. so it starts at 233kJ/mol, products energy is 34kJ/mol. so delta H = H of products minus H of reactants, so its 34 kJ/mol minus 233 kJ/mol, therefore delta H is neg 199

the process is exothermic, reactants are higher up than products on the curve you would draw.

hope this helps!

Reactant + 96kJ -------> 295kJ + 34kJ

x + 96 = 295 + 34

x = 233kJ/mole

Energy of Reactant = 233kJ/mole
