Right now i am in just in a chem class thats not a prereq unfortunately where i placed into since I hadnt taken chem since honors chem sophomore year of high school.. I am starting general chem 1 for pre req next semester and have been noticing aside from anatomy that A LOT of people have trouble with chem and have to retake it. I want to start off strong and end strong as to not have to retake it any suggestions on what to do? Any helpful study material or websites? To the people who retook it what did you change from the first go around?

Thanks guys for everything! I am new here and don't want to mess up anything!!!!

I think you will be fine. I didn't take chem at all in high school. I took an intro chem course (like you are in I assume) in college before I knew I wanted to be a PT and that helped me A LOT! I ended up getting A's in Chem I and II. It wasn't easy but you just have to practice a ton. Do all the homework, even if its not for a grade. That's my advise 🙂

I'm taking Chem I right now (along with Anatomy and Physics I), after being out of school for many years. I'm doing well would really just recommend studying and doing the homework as much as possible. Even when it is not required, I just practice as many problems as I can from the textbook. This practice is the main way that I've been really learning and understanding the material, and I've been getting A's on all my tests/quizzes so far. I don't think there's a need for extra study materials (at least not for me). If you are taking an intro class first, you will be well prepared for Chem I. Just be ready to put a lot of time into studying. Good luck!

I think you will be fine. Just utilize the sources you have around you (TA's, office hours, discussion sections, etc.). Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

I had a very poor chemistry background in high school (teacher actually got fired for it) and enrolled in gen chem in college with the hardest professor known to man. My sister has a doctorate in chemistry and she was astonished at the things he was teaching us/expecting us to know in that class. Anyways, I didn't do great...but I also didn't need to retake it and I got into PT school just fine. I definitely lived in the chem building that year though haha.

You guys made me feel A TON better about taking chem! I was expecting that studying and doing the homework come along with it 😛 it is college! And if thats really the only studying you guys had to I feel like I'll do just fine! Thanks so much!

Factor label will save your life when having to do conversions bc you learn why things happen instead of memorizing meaningless equations. My Chem prof got a lot of flack from students who wanted spoon fed but he got millions of praises from those of us wanting to learn 🙂

We just learned that technique in my intro chem class and it saved my butt on my exam the other day! I need the "why" when learning - im glad to know that's going to come in handy again for my next 2 classes 🙂

Yes! I'm a "why" person too! And I think that's why I struggled in physiology the first time through because it IS the why, so there is no why for the why (ha!) and I just needed to learn to accept some things as fact, like there is Ca2+ in the extracellular fluid- why? Because there is. The end.

But I'm super pumped you learned factor label, because I found it so helpful! 🙂

Oh boy I did not think about that for physiology I guess I'm gonna have to learn to just accept and let it be haha. At least I have a heads up 😛
