hi,
my question is on page 43, #70
we might have different editions, so here is a summary: the passage states the column of the manometer is filled with mercury, but the answer to #70 says since its aqueous, it is denset at 4 Celcius.
Is this a typo?

The solution in the flask is aqueous, while the manometer is filled with mercury. As the aqueous solution is cooled down to 4C, its volume descreases, which in turn increases the volume of the air space above the solution. This reduces the gas pressure of the system (in addition to the drop in pressure associated with a lower temperature). With the pressure inside the flask dropping, the mercury in the manometer will shift to the side connected to the flask (in this case the left side). Does that make sense?

yes, thanks, but i think the answer in the book is written in a very confusing way. dont you?

the answer writing feeling that is received by the recipient at the time that the answer absorption is first considered after the initial processing of the answer wording could in fact be thought of as having a level of clarity that is not of the standard of other questions. 🙂
