Hello again
So I found out a couple days ago that I'll need 7 extra credits to minor in chemistry after my ochems are done. This means, unfortunately, I have to pick between P-chem and inorganic chemistry. Which fate would you pick? I'm not asking for the "easier" way between the two juggernauts, but... well... yes I am.
Thank you

Let me tell you right now. As an idiot who picked up an additional chem major... don't do it. It is not worth it. No one cares, during my interviews no one really cared I picked up another chem degree so they definitely won't care about a chem minor. Take it if you like chemistry but not because you think it will stand out.

Pchem sucks, pchem 2 sucks harder, pchem lab sucks hardest. Inorganic is pretty easy actually.

Really for me it's between taking 7 credits of Chem and get a minor, or taking those credits just as extra BMS classes

All I am saying is a minor is insignificant really. If those chem classes interest you, then go for it. If not, it's a bit of a waste. Pchem really is hard though, inorganic is not that bad.

I second the above statement. So many applicants have chem minors so it doesn't really stand out. Only go for it if it really interests you.

Disagree. At my school, it was take an additional 1 lecture and 1 lab for minor in chem (beyond what dental school required, not my degree) or 12 more bio credits and at least 2 of the courses had to have lab. So I chose the chem minor. Analytical chemistry is the option I chose over p chem and inorganic. Talking to my friends who went with inorganic, analytical was much more difficult (calculus) than inorganic (like organic but with metals).

Really? I've taken all three, analytical wasn't that bad, inorganic is like gen chem on roids and pchem was straight diff eq/linear algebra/physics 3

Analytical was gen chem on roids for us. The class average on one of our tests was a 33 and she didn't curve. There was more than handful of students who were taking it for their 2nd or 3rd time. I squeaked out a B-.

Wait what the hell? So your school like switch analytical and inorganic?

I guess? Here's the description from the catalog of both courses:

CHEM 321. Analytical Chemistry Lecture. 3 Credits.

A study of the fundamental principles of quantitative chemical analysis including the application of principles of equilibria to analytical processes. Emphasis is given to gravimetric and titrimetric methods as well as consideration of electrical, optical, and other methods of chemical analysis. Prerequisites: CHEM 123N or CHEM 137N/CHEM 138N and MATH 211 with a grade of C or better.

CHEM 351. Inorganic Chemistry. 3 Credits.

This foundational course provides an introduction to inorganic chemistry. Topics include periodic law, bonding theory, oxidation/reduction, acid/base theory, descriptive chemistry of the main group, and an introduction to transition metal coordination chemistry. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in CHEM 137N or CHEM 123N.

Ah, your analytical sounds the same, inorganic sounds a bit different though. Makes sense, thanks for sharing!

For me inorganic chem was more difficult than p chem. This maybe due to having a p chem professor who decided to use half of the exam questions straight from the study guide lol. But I agree, P chem lab definitely SUCK! you'll be on your computer writing reports and drawing figures for weeks.

Anyhow OP, I would definitely stay away from both classes. Unless you REALLY want that minor. Upper bio classes will be much more helpful in the long run.

Take inorganic chemistry. Inorganic was easier than OChem for me but i can't speak for everyone else on that.

PChem ****ed everyone up. Only maybe 3-4 people actually got A's in that course. Freelanceteach on youtube has a bunch of videos related to inorganic chemistry; this guy was literally a tutor through youtube for me and got me an A.

the pchem u guys refer to is quantum principle or statistical mechanics or other weird stuff

I actually double major in chemistry............so i took 3 pchem classes (year round series), 2 inorganic class, 1 analytical on top of gchem and ochem............and i kinda feel how u guys feel.

im the same idiot and i agree with u. nobody cares at my interviews. but i like chem thou 😉 the girls there seem more relaxed than cut throat pre med bio majors at my school 🙂

I like chem too, but I'm always thinking "man senior year would be much easier if it weren't for chem..."
