Hi everyone,
Could someone please clarify exactly what the chemistry requirements are for American Dental Schools? I'm trying to confirm whether or not it's 1 year General Chemistry WITH lab AND 1 Year Organic Chemistry WITH lab?

Thanks so much!

Correct:

  • 1 year General Chemistry WITH lab

  • 1 Year Organic Chemistry WITH lab

Each school seems to have its own requirement. But yes, most schools want one year of each. I know UPenn just wants 3 semesters of organic chem and gen chem, you can mix and match which you want to take (2 gen +1 ochem or 2 ochem + 1 gen). Some schools like Maryland go by units (6 sem units of gen chem req), which can be fulfilled by AP credits.

thanks a bunch for your quick responses! I just wanted to make sure that I satisfy the chem requirements for as many schools as possible! Cheers!

chemistry lab classes at my school are AWFUL. the worst thing ever. the lab experiments are boring, the equipment is ghetto and breaks. one time in pchem lab, we spent an entire week on an experiment that really should only take like an hour b/c we had the wrong stopcock grease and the teacher never helped us do anything. the wrong stopcock grease..how were we supposed to know? when we did the bomb calorimeter experiment, we had to do it like FIVE KABILLION times because the computer on the bomb calorimeter kept being dysfunctional.

i was going to take a lab class from this one crazy professor this semester, the first day of class the professor goes "wouldn't it be something if you got an F in chem II lab?! MUAHAHAHAHA" and i was like "woah..i have to get out of here."

so..i am now taking the lab class from another university nearby. it is wonderful. the teacher is awesome, and i actually enjoy going to the class. plus, there it's not a crazy class where we have to write lab reports for EVERY experiment and get crazy hard quizzes from the crazy professor that threatened to fail me on the first day of class before we even started a lab experiment. before i even said anything. (also, i have never even had a class from this professor and i don't really even know him. i was in the same grade as his daughter, but that's about it. we weren't friends or anything. so that just goes to show you how crazy he is.)

from the sounds of it when i taught gen chem in college you were the type of student who i would fail. your only looking for the easy way out.
i challenged my students and they learned their ****. i only failed 2 students, but scared everyone at first, they rose to the challenge, and succeeded. i always hated the pre-meds and pre-dental students.
even though i am now in dental school.

you know what though? i was one of those students who would spend hours on end studying the minutia of chemistry. in the chemistry lecture course that corresponded to the lab the teacher threatened to fail me in, i only missed ONE question that whole class on one of the midterms and it was b/c i forgot to square root something. i even had the equation written out right, i just forgot to put it into my calculator.

so i am not lazy..i just get frustrated when the equipment doesn't work and there are more efficient ways that things could be done. plus, the teachers do a horrible job of explaining stuff (one teacher never even explained anything and would just walk away.) if i'm supposed to be able to teach myself advanced physical chemistry on my own, then why am i paying $1,750 to take a class from a teacher who refuses to teach. might as well just learn it on my own.

ALSO, i would do chemistry tutoring at my school and the students i tutored would be like "wow!! you make chemistry SO easy! i get it now!" one time a student even told a teacher that they wanted me to tutor them instead of the teachers. so this is not just in my mind.

it doesn't make sense to me to have to do an experiment six kabillion times b/c a stupid computer won't work. it's just screwed up and man, i don't have a degree in computer science. you could tinker with that thing until the cows come home and it not work right.

also, one of the chemistry classes i got most frustrated with was the class that the girl who scored the highest on the MCAT in the history of the school also hated. she didn't even turn in her lab reports b/c it sucked so bad.

the classes at my school are just run in a ridiculously inefficient way. i love my new lab class. it is awesome and i feel like it is ran efficiently and i have learned to enjoy it. not think "i wonder what ghetto piece of equipment is going to break today"
