Hi there,

I have a question about chemo drugs on Step 1. Do they test indications for each particular drug? Or is it mainly the side effects and the mechanisms of action that are tested? FA gives very incomplete info on the indications (as I discovered having gone through the UpToDate), but reasonably good overview of mechanism of action of each particular class. So, I decided it is not worth my while trying to memorize the incomplete list of indications for the chemo drugs presented in the FA. Do you think this is reasonable? I searched on this forum, and have not found anyone saying that they were tested on indications; only on side effects and mechanisms of action.

many thanks.
P.S. I am resident in the UK, not in the US - just to avoid confusion about my status. Studying for Step 1 in my spare time after work.

Knowing the indications for drugs is not neccessary but it does help. They will give you a patient with a certain infection or cancer and then describe a mechanism or a side effect (or interaction) and ask you what drug they're on.

Sounds easy but they still found ways to ask those questions that stumped me. If you know what 2-3 drugs are actually used for the condition then it helps narrow down your choices.

Yup, I concur with knowing only the MOA and S/E's of the chemotherapy drugs.

One question on my exam gave a side effect and asked where the drug acts in the cell cycle without ever mentioning any drug names. I think it was bone marrow depression and S phase (methotrexate).
