Anyone know the difference between the Chair of IM vs the Chief of IM? vs Program Director? Some programs require a letter from the "Chair" of IM.

I know who's our Cheif and Program Director of IM, but i'm so sure who or what the Chair is.

thanks for your help.

Usually, a chair runs a department while a chief runs a division of a department. So you could get one from the chair of internal medicine but not the chief of cardiology (a division of internal medicine).

Alot of times in an academic center when people say "Chief" they mean a resident.

Agree with dilated. The Chairman of a Department answers to the Dean. The other positions you described answer to the Chair.

Thanks for the info...

What about the Program Director? where does the PD fit in all this?

The program director oversees the residents. Sometimes a PD can be a department chair as well, and sometimes not.
