Choosing between 2 answers on verbal?

Are there any tricks to choosing between the two answer choices in verbal? I am often finding myself limiting the answer choices to two, but I am not usually selecting the best choice.

The one that is better supported by the passage, the one that supports the main idea better, and a lot times that one that doesn't use very similar wording as the passage. Also, based on the question, the one that is either more general or more specific. The one that you might not have to use outside knowledge from.
