Hi all,

Surprisingly, I was REALLY impressed by this program on my interview day! They have quite a lot to offer in an affordable city 🙂

Would appreciate any input on the pros and cons of this program, as well as the neighborhoods where residents live.

I'm glad you had a better experience than I did at Cinci. I was somewhat disappointed. I will offer my opinions regarding the program, but keep in mind that my experience was different and I may be a bit biased.

Pros:
I think they get great teaching. The program director is absolutely amazing and an excellent teacher to boot. The program is very well respected and fellowship opportunities will be plenty. The pigs...😀 They pamper their residents. Catered breakfast and lunch. Affordable city.

Cons:
The city. I wasn't very impressed with Cinci. This probably stems from the fact that I got lost in the 'ghetto'....at least the part of Cinci that wasn't too nice. It has it's fair share of crime....comparable with most cities its size.

Our tour was somewhat sketchy. The intern didn't know where the NICU was....because she never went there. It doesn't help that she also went to Cinci for med school. The residents we met didn't seem very happy....just my impression.

The clinics are spread all over and some are in very dangerous neighborhoods.

Being a single guy, it seemed like a poor choice. Apparently Cinci is not the place to be single.

What topped it for me is one faculty member I met with who asked some very offensive questions. They also happened to be in the specialty I am interested in. That was a big issue with the program for me.

Overall: It's a great program...the location is the big downfall for me, along with a bad vibe....it may be right for you, but not me.

If the location is in a "rough" area, then that is an ideal place for a physician; maybe I'm wrong, but Cincy's location may provide you with a more consistent flow of patients. For some folks, the likelihood of getting mugged is too high on those late work nights. However, it depends on the person. I personally have no issues with introducing military training to an unsuspecting thug from Martin Luther King Drive or Vine Street...lol! I almost attended UCincy some years ago. When confronted with a one way street, my friends glanced over at me and said "hey, - - - - - is black! We're going to be okay." The moment we hit a stop light, I engaged the locks.

Hey all,
Cincinnati was my first interview, so I didn't know what exactly to expect, but I loved the place! I even got lost in the ghetto too, the night before when trying to find the hotel. However, the residents seemed rediculously happy when I was there. Everyone was laughing, smiling, saying hello. They seemed really happy with their schedule, and claimed they get sleep when on call. Morning report was very engaging and interesting, and everyone was enjoying their free bagels and coffee. I loved how they get a lot of work done during rather than after rounds. I loved the international opportunities. I liked that it was big and that you will see everything there, with not many competing hospitals in the region.

The interview itself was probably the most difficult of all the programs I went to (3 half hour interviews in a row, with real questions).

I am from Ohio, and have a certain tolerance to things that people might dislike about Cincinnati. However, I think Cincinnati, like most cities, has some bad areas but also very nice areas. There are lots of wonderful places to live there.
