Is there anything new going on with U Cincinnati. No one seems to be posting anything.

Did the people who got an email status update notification of their Alternate List status also recieve a snail mail confirmation of being put on the Alternate List?

I seem to recall from last year's UC thread there was something like that.

Also, does anyone know how Cincinnati's alternate list works? Do they have separate IS and OOS lists? If so, which list tends to move faster?

i had heard that they were interviewing for waitlist spots (the class filled up pretty early) back in january so i am sure the list is somewhat extensive. It is a state school so they have to meet a minimun requirement for in-staters. That being said i would make an educated guess, though not sure on this, that the out of state moves faster than the in state. Cincinnati/Ohio State are the two top schools in Ohio so i wouldnt think people would be giving up their spot to attend toledo, wright st, or NEOUCOMM. I am guessing they interview a decent amount of OOS, many of who wont attend UC so i would bet that portion of the list moves much more. :luck: :luck:

I got waitlisted today, 2 weeks after my interview on 2/27. I don't know what to think because I was waitlisted last year and obviously did not get in. I've heard of many people getting accepted after first being waitlisted but has anyone heard of someone being waitlisted twice

as a reapplicant myself, i feel for your frustration. at this point, i've heard of all sorts of great news and disappointing news happening to (re)applicants. if this makes any sense, i was waitlisted at Vanderbilt when i first applied for 2005 matriculation, then was flatout rejected pre-secondary this time around, after i upped my MCAT from a 30 to a 39 and got a research job with publications. 😕 (i already e-mailed Vandy admissions to get feedback, and as expected, it was vague and unhelpful.)

did (or did not) the snail mail letters say "very interested" in anyone else's?

"The Committee on Admissions at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine would like to thank you for your recent visit and interview. We appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and obtain additional information about your candidacy. The Committee has reviewed your application and is impressed with your credentials. Although we are unable to offer you a place in the entering class at this time, the Committee remains very interested in your application and we are going to place you on our Alternate list. Because acceptances are offered on a rolling basis throughout the year, we will continue to review your credentials for further consideration. If there is any change in your status, we will contact you immediately.

Again, thank you for your interest in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and please be assured the Committee will keep you informed as the admissions year progresses."

it's standard, cookie-cutter language. i doubt anyone else's waitlist letter says anything different - please correct me if i'm wrong?

in previous years there was a difference

This is the standard letter. "Very Interested" means nothing at this point.

Mid April, they will send out e-mails when they formulate thier good and bad waitlists. This is when the wording will be different. There will be a good e-mail where they will tell you you are great, and that you will be considered for the first spots that open and a bad letter that just says you're on the waitlist, do you wish to stay there?

Did anyone else receive the alternate list email today? It seems that I just got the regular one because there was no mention of the "special group". Did anyone receive the "special group" email?

They sent out the "no hope" e-mail... (basically, "you can stay on the waitlist, but don't bother")

I got it.

If you got something to the extent of "You are in a select pool of applicants to be offered a seat as it becomes available"... you're sitting pretty.

EDIT: perhaps not as hopless as it originally seems (see below)

This is the exact wording of the "no hope" email:

The Committee on Admissions at the University of Cincinnati wishes to thank you for your continuing interest in the College of Medicine and your patience over the past several months. This year, the admissions process has been a very demanding one because of a sharp increase in the number of applicants. However, we have completed the review of all applicants and would like to update you on your status.

To date, we have extended a sufficient number of offers to fill the class. However, we know from past experiences that openings usually occur in the summer and would like to keep you as an individual on our Alternate List. Although the number of students accepted each summer varies and we never guarantee an acceptance, we anticipate additional offers will be made after May 15, 2007.

Yup. That's me. 👍

so true.

I'm just wondering if anyone else received the "special" email, maybe...just maybe, there was no "special" email sent out this year??? I'm crossing my fingers that that's the case but i seriously doubt it.

I'm in the same boat as you and Depakote.

I had the same thought that maybe there's no "special" letter. After all, they did change their procedure a little bit by sending out letters two weeks earlier than they did in the past. Maybe they did away with the special letters too??

If I don't see anyone posting about getting the special letter in the next few days I might start to feel better.

Good luck to all of us. We need it.

I also got the mainstream alternate list letter. But I am curious: has anyone received the rumored special letter or a rejection letter instead?

I believe they don't reject post-interview (or save it for really special cases).

I don't know of anyone that got it this year, but this is the e-mail thread from last year.

I received this general letter last year too and the only difference I see between the wording from last year and this year is that last year it said:

To date, we have extended a sufficient number of offers to fill the class. However, we know from past experiences that openings always occur in the late spring and early summer and we are offering you a place on our Alternate List. Although the number of students accepted each summer varies and we never guarantee an acceptance, we anticipate additional offers will be made after May 15th.

whereas this year it says:

Wonder if that means anything?...probably not, i'm just grasping at strings now

Thanks, Depakote, for the response. I guess we're all in pretty much the same boat right now. Just to be sure no one feels bad though, Dr. Manuel did tell us at the interview this year that they will be rejecting a number of people, and keeping their waitlist to a minimum.

I'm really surprised there has yet to be anyone come on here who has received a special email. I really, really hope there was no special email this year and we all still have a chance!

At the risk of trying to over-analyze the difference in language, last year were people not put on the alternate list until they received the Alternate List letter in April?

I thought last year, as with this year, people were put on the alternate list earlier, typically 2 to 3 weeks after their interviews, well prior to mid-April.

Am I hyperfocusing on the word offer in last year's letter unreasonably? Given that all the other language is identical, one has to wonder why that particular phrase was changed.

I think I'm going crazy!!

I have no idea... Cinci makes you read between the lines. So are these the lines we are supposed to read between or is there something out there that makes it abundantly clear.... *head a splodes*

Hey guys,

I received the exact same e-mail as above.

good luck all :luck:

I wish more people on the cincy waitlist would come on here and say what kind of letter they got so I can stop falsely hoping if that may be the case 😳

Yes, please. A swift rifle shot is better than a slow bleed.

Sorry to break your guys hearts, but I got the different "special" email. Received it today. Oh what did you say, its not april 1st anymore? I got the plain old sucky one.👎

I would beg to differ, but OSU and Case Western are the two top schools in Ohio, with Cincy being a close 3rd (compared to OSU, not to Case). Anywho...Cincy is still a great school.

:meanie: you scared me!

My understanding was that they put some people (I have no idea what percentage) on the alternate list post-interview, and then they compose the final alternate list (probably the ranked one, although they won't tell us our rank) in April, once they get all the confirmation letters back. So I wouldn't worry too much over the wording.

I would really love to get into Cinci right about now!

Could you explain this more fully.

I thought everyone post-interview was either accepted, rejected or alternate-listed within 2 to 3 weeks after their interviews. Are you saying that some people have heard nothing after their interviews until now? Or are you saying that they are using this letter (and our responses) to reduce the size of the pool of alternate list candidates they must rank to create the final [ranked] alternate list? Or something else?

TY in advance.

From what I gathered, I think you have it right with the reducing the size of the alternate list pool and ranking the final pool only. That's what I'm going to go with, anyway. Hope this helps!

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is the case.

Hey Guys,
I got the "you're just ordinary" e-mail too. I was also wondering if they sent out the "special" email, but it doesn't make sense that they would do so until they knew who still wanted to be on the altenate list, just to eliminate time and hassle on their part. This is sort of a horrible question to ask, but has anyone heard of someone being rejected after their "late" interview for an alternate list spot?

i was placing Case in a different category since it is not a state school. Maybe i should have made this more clear but i thought it was understood. 😉

For those of us on the alternate list who received the "ordinary email", when was your interview?
Mine was February 28th...I know, I had a late one.

i meant February 27th

I interviewed on 2/12. Bah, humbug. They can just give my spot on the waitlist to someone else, I want to get on with my life!

see http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=4834662, the U Cincinnati? thread. In particular, one poster [Braluk] who is at U of Cincinnati says: "Im not sure, but all my friends and SDN posters (>10 that I know and read about) who have interviewed at UC since the start of Feb seems to have either made it to the waitlist or to the rejection pile."

So it seems that some of the late interviewees have not been waitlisted.

I wish we had some sort of idea how large the waitlist pool is, also it's still bothering me that I have no idea if the "special" email exists this year. Why do med schools torture us like this?? Isn't the application process enough...man they can really be sadists!

At this point, no one knows. Not even UCCOM. The size depends on how many people choose to stay on the alternate list (or how many decline to stay on, take your pick).

I have to admit, however, that I'm a bit surprised by how few people are posting on this thread. Is the number of people who had been placed on the alternate list small? Are these people reluctant to post? Did only a few people get the letter we received?

Inquiring minds want to know. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I interviewed 1/23, and I think they filled their class maybe a week before they reviewed my app...so I just missed that one. But I do feel like they said they were having a relatively small waitlist, so maybe there are just fewer of us? I don't know...

Don't overestimate the amount of premeds who post on sdn. At some of my interviews sdn came up and like 2 or 3 people knew about it out of 10 plus. And many of the people who go to the site are just lurkers.

I also received the regular email everyone is reporting. Looks like there isn't a special one.

It just seems like there were a lot more posters on last year's cincy waitlist thread compared to this year, hopefully it's representative of a smaller waitlist pool
