The phylogenetic tree below represents the evolutionary relationships of various types of land plants. Which clade is not a monophyletic group?

answer is bryophytes but can you explain why?

thanks.

Monophyletic groups are typically characterized by shared derived characteristics (synapomorphies). The shared characteristic in this case is vascularity-- which is shared between seedless plants and seed plants in the diagram above. It is basically asking which one is not like the others-- because bryophytes dont share that common trait they are not considered monophyletic.... hope that helps you.. that logic has helped me answer any question that I have been faced with so far about cladistics. I really recommend googling monophyletic groups and brushing up on the other type of groups. Let me know if you need further clarification.

I know what monophyletic means but I don't see like a marking or a circle or something like that to indicate wtf they are asking like for example

I know that black circle represent a monophyletic group because the common ancestor includes all of its descendants.

u know what I mean?

if you say that bryophyte isn't a monophyletic group because it isn't a vascular plant but aren't they all LAND plants?

In order for the bryo to be monophyletic, u gotta include both seedless and seed plants as well since they too come from the same ancestor... at leas thats what i think. oh well, qvault is known for its errors so u gotta take their answers and explanations with a grain of salt

I have a question for you guys. i have pretty much memorized the ap cliff biology book(except the lab and some plants lol) and I am on test number 8 on qvault and my lowest score on qvault is a 16 which was my first test.

Test 2-8 has been 18-20. Do you think I am ready for the bio section? lol
I also did all destroyer problems.

thanks.

Well... Bio is such a crapshoot I dont think anyone can say for sure whether youll be ready or not... Lately I've been thinking that doing well on DAT, especially Bio, is 80% hard work and 20% luck. You couldve have studied for 3 months, 10 hours day, but end up with some WTF questions on your DAT that prevent you from scoring well, meanwhile someone may have studied half the amount but end up lucky and see questions that theyve had exposure to during their studying. NOT saying that people with good scores didnt deserve it, but just saying that luck is part of getting those ridiculous high scores.. just me 2 cents
