hey guys, fourth year medical student here who's getting ready for the whole match process. i just wanted to see where all of my fellow applicants are headed out for aways this year. maybe we'll run into each other before the whole interview process starts. I'll start off:

Stanford in September
Baylor (hopefully) in October

Today was our last day of third year! Psyched about fourth year, but already freaking out about the whole match thing. Of course today we all compared notes about what field we are going into. Record numbers of people want Anesthesiology! I would say ER is the number one desire followed by anesthesiology -- is this similar to most of everyone else's fourth year classes? Seems like it is shaping up to be another competitive year!

About an average year for my class, about 5% of us. Ortho is huge here this year.

I think about ten percent of my class is looking into anesthesiology. I think that is about average. Interestingly, at our school, those who applied and were accepted to anesthesiology residencies told us during an interest group meeting that during their interviews they were told that there were record number of applications received. Everyone from my school matched (21) and I think there were several unfilled spots. I don't think that anesthesiology will necessarily be more competitive this year, but I bet when we are interviewing we hear the same thing.

Seriously guys, check out the UAB rotation. It's an amazing place and an amazing rotation for students who want good exposure and potential letters.

Every year I say the same thing:

Check out University of Washington at Harborview. You'll do everything there unless you wanna ditch out. Cullen is there. You'll rotate with VM and UW residents. Go in the summer early fall. Seattle is a kick a$$ city and this is a kick a$$ rotation. Right in downtown.

Do your cases (certain attendings will let you do EVERYTHING *ahem Chuck Novak*), throw in lines, learn to put in an epidural, an lma, use a glidescope, a fiberoptic,a site-rite,a whatever, then head out to the beach on Puget Sound. Go for a wicked bike ride. Check out the warf. Hit up a pub for some live music. You get the idea.

I would say that 3-5% of my class wants anesthesia. I would say that ER is far and away number one with primary care (especially Peds and OB/GYN) a close 2nd. Best of luck to all with upcoming interviews and rotations.
