Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
But yeah, it's kinda crazy... I've been busy seeing friends and family, and especially the girlfriend now that I actually have time to do so. I'm sure I'll be back on here 24/7 as soon as I get back to school and especially a couple of hours before some otherwise super important exam 😛

Also, hey c/o 2013! It's sure getting hard to find time to get on SDN over the break (just got back from the Alamo Bowl here in San Antonio, great game... and since my dad works for the sponsor, Valero, that means we got access to the company lounge where we got free food and FREE LIQUOR!!!).

Hope everyone's break is going well, may some of you all get some belated Christmas presents this holiday season, and those of you lucky enough to have decisions to make, I hope you make the right choice for yourself 🙂

That sounds like a lot of fun.

Haha... that is good.... I also completely understand about the exam part... I was on SDN 20 minutes before my genetics final...

Huh, maybe SDN is good luck since I did well in my genetics class... I honestly spent more time on SDN last quarter than I did studying for that class...

Yep... it was funny, I had to make myself go study in the crappy computer lab (internet moves too slow to realistically use SDN) to get any work done during my finals 😀

So... I have always wondered this... what do people actually do on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day... and what is the difference?
I think this question sounds odd, but I am genuinely curious... is it the same as they show on TV?

Also, regarding that vaccination interlude that happened on the last page... so what shots do we actually have to get to be set for med school that we didn't need for college? My acceptances have pretty much just said (as far as I could tell) that I had to send them my immunization history, but didn't tell me any specific shots that I needed to have... is there something I need to make sure I've got?

Someone, anyone... help?

I'm not sure I understand the question... I would imagine that you know that Christmas is the actual religious holiday, and therefore the Eve is just the day before it... so what more do you want to know?

As for my family personally, we always go to one of the Christmas vigil masses at our church (as good as Christmas Day mass for us Catholics 🙂) on Christmas Eve late afternoon/early evening, go to a family reunion thing for my dad's side of the family that evening, and then actually open gifts on Christmas Day morning. Usually some of my mom's family will come over at some point in the day.

But I'm not sure I'm answering your question 😕

If I am not mistaken, they need to make sure you have been immunized, and you need to have the Hep B, TB, and Tetanus Booster done...since these are technically optional...

Hmmm... so I suppose if I send them my immunization record, they'll send me a note saying I need to get X, Y, and Z done before I start? Can't they probably just give me them when I get there?

Yes I know it is a religious holiday, although there are people who are trying to make it more of a secular gift giving holiday...

But your explanation is sufficient. It makes sense... I was just wondering what the point of the Eve was...

Some shots like Hep B need to be done over a long period of time...

It can be either of those or neither. Many of my atheist/agnostic, buddhist, and Jewish friends celebrate Christmas. It's basically just a time to be with family and eat a lot of food.

There's nothing actually special about the Eve. But since Christmas is such a big holiday here, they like to stretch out the celebration.

Yah, I guess... I have never celebrated it (considering I am not part of the above mentioned religions) so I was just curious...

Interesting, which religion are you?

Oh... well, if you're interested in the religious aspect of it, it's kind of important as a day of expectation and anticipation. That's really the idea behind the vigil masses, anyways, though there's not really MUCH difference from the actual Christmas day mass.

But for a lot of people, it's important because that's they'll get together in the evening to actually exchange gifts that night. It's also particularly important for married couples; sometimes, if the wings of the family live close enough, they'll spend Christmas Eve with one side of the family and then Christmas Day with the other, that way neither set of in-laws feels slighted.

Oh yeah... hmmm, it's 3 o clock where I'm at, I'm allowed to forget these things 😛 And in a related note, you'd better hurry up and get to 2k, I'm ready to go to bed!

And if I remember correctly... you're Hindu, right?

Nope... the other religion that is predominant in India... and please do not say Sikh or Jain or Buddhist... or Animist for that matter

Woohoo!

I have no idea what the above pic is...

Oh and Spurs... go to bed... sorry for keeping you up... I have had too much sugar today, so I am still awake...

On a related side note: I seriously need to get a life...🙄

Yup! We have a winner!

Damn... and I specifically remember you mentioning your religious holiday last week, and I had to look it up and saw it was for Islam. And then I forgot. *sigh* I'm a terrible friend.

Alright... off to bed 🙂 'Grats on the 2000th post thingy, I'll try to remember to get my new immunizations soon... if anyone has anything else to add, please do, I'd feel silly if I showed up and they said, "sorry, we have to hold you out for half a year because you have to get these shots over a 6 month period"

Iyi Geceler Kardeşim... Good night buddy for those who do not speak Turkish...

I need to practice... I forgot most of what I learned...:scared:

I'd be interested in learning more about islam. From what I have heard it seems to be a bit more logically coherent than christianity. Judaism also seems to be more logically coherent than christianity.

I like that Jesus isn't such a big deal in those religions.

Do most muslims believe that god is an actual conscious all-knowing entity?
Or do they believe that god is just the good forces in life (love, compassion, charity, empathy, tolerance)?

He is still kind of a big deal... just not apotheosed though... and yah, we do not need to worry about the trinity (which no offense to anyone, but I never understood)...

If you have any questions... feel free to ask... I will try to answer, although there is a lot of stuff I may not know about...

He is supposed to be outside the context of space and time, (It is blasphemous to apply the concepts of space and time to comprehend God, because these are all rules that he has created, and his existence is beyond our realm of knowledge) but he is actually able to visualize every person ever created at all points of time in all moments and do this for every single person that was ever lived, is living, or will live in the future. Thus, he does exist as an all-knowing entity.

Ok, I'm interested in the epistemology of that line of thought. Is that a belief or supposed to be known? If it is supposed to be known, what was the source of the information? That's where many christians lose me. They claim that it's known but then cannot explain where the information came from.

I dunno... I just follow it... I believe there are backings in it in the Quran and the traditions, but it might be a belief...but you need to go spend >8 years to learn all of these things... (I have decided to spend these 8 years doing undergrad and med school instead😳) I remember hearing about this but I just take it as faith...but it has to do with logic also, I mean why would God place himself in the rules of time and space... then he would be subject to aging, and then time would not exist... I try not to think of it too much, because as mentioned above, there are many things that are beyond the realm of my understanding... or human understanding for that matter...

Sorry I cannot be of more help on this topic...

I was a Theo major and this all sounds very familiar

re: Christmas

I guess I'm one of thepeople who tries to make it more secular. My boyfriend is Jewish(not religious, but his parents are) and I am technically Russian orthodox (also not religious; my "christmas" is jan 7) so we kinda compromise and celebrate dec 25 🙂

Hey! I see you used your donor power to alter your name as well 😎

ps. apartment shopping already? 😱 I guess in the big cities where nice housing is hard to find...but I was planning on trying to find a place only after I figure out where I'm going for sure in May.

haha, yup. It started to bug me that those two letters were not capitalized. I didnt think anyone would notice. Good job!

it is definitely wayy too early to look for apartments, evenin cities like NYC. My plan is to start lightly in April and really really intensely in May because my current lease expires June 1. Although I have definitely already started browsing craigslist for fun 🙂

Oh yeah, I remember in my Byzantine art history classes, we learned about the fact that due to the rift between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires, the Eastern decided that after the Western switched to the Gregorian Calendar, they would not follow and remain with the Julian Calendar, so the Christmases are 13 days apart...
