Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
HELLO EVERYONE! How did I not know about this thread sooner? I feel like such a slacker!!! I am so excited guys... this is our year. We are going to be doctors. (lol maybe if I keep repeating this over and over to myself, I'll believe it). 🙂

I spent yesterday obsessing over my AMCAS (even though I submitted it on the 9th). eh. Where are these secondary prompts everyone is using ... nothing like writing essays to keep my mind off the stress, right???

anyway, I look forward to getting to know you guys over the next year!!!:hardy:

HEY!! Welcome to the thread, glad you found it!! 🙂

Visit this thread to see all the info on last year's cycle, including all of last year's secondary prompts. Do you think the secondary apps change from year to year?? Hope not!!

Hope the secondaries keep your mind off the stress!! In my case, reading over all the prompts got me even more stressed! :scared:

Haha.... they probably will just stress me out more. I'm wondering what else I could really have to talk about for the supplemental essays (besides the obligatory "why our school" standard)... between my PS and all the "experiences" i had to fill out - i'm a little tapped.

maybe I'm just not that interesting...... 😕

anywho, thanks for the link and the welcome!

we should so sticky this thread....

I bet the posts would come a' pouring in....

anyone still waiting on stupid AMCAS to verify their dang app already? I think maybe its my timing.... I tend to submit things near the middle of the week, and then they never get to it before the weekend (like my transcripts, for instance)

Nothing like 12 hour shifts at the hospital to clear my head...... 🙁

welcome, admiter! and happy fathers day! 🙂

Well thank you, my friend. Same to you.

p.s. I went to the "other school" in hattiesburg for undergrad 🙂 wouldn't it be weird if I had met you in the real world...

Hmm...good question. I made separate accounts for Hopkins and Columbia, but then I tried using the Secondary ID #s given for each school at the other school's secondary website, and both worked on each site.

Does anyone who applied last year know how this works?

I answered this somewhere else earlier today... but I don't know where. If you read the fine print they say you can use the same login for both schools. So if you ended up getting two just make sure that you only have your AAMC # referring to one of them because otherwise the system could get confused and think your app is incomplete. I would recommend only using one of your logins for both schools, it will probably make it easier.

haha SUBMIT! it'll never be perfect 😛

Exactly. And for the love of God, don't look at it anymore once you've submitted it! All you'll do is find a sentence you wish you could edit and drive yourself crazy over it. Just let it be once it's submitted!

haha Clock has a point! Don't ever look at it again after you submit it 👍

2013 is in the Building!!!!

The hardest thing for me was being satisfied with my PS. Once that was done, the rest was easy. Have gotten some secondaries to work finish but I am glad the application is underway!

hell yeah!

Hey Berk! How are you feeling? Congrats on banging the mcat!

Hey Cuya, how are you doing?

thank you! i didn't actually "bang" the mcat...but i'm done! We're free bison!!!
How are you doing? Enjoying your postbac-free life?

Dude, you got to bang the MCAT? She told me she was waiting for marriage... 🙁
haha i like you clock.

Dang it Clock, Im sorry she lied to you. She can sometimes be a B*%$@, for real!

haha i like you clock.

We are free BERK. 👍😀👍 I am doing good, loving the postbacc free life. Finishing up my amcas so I can submit. Also trying to create a resume becuz I need a job!

Howdy all! Just another day of the same old, same old here.

I had a fabulous leaky roof yesterday... which is kinda interesting considering I live on the bottom floor of an apartment complex. After numerous calls and a bucket placed at the scene of the crime, the maintenance man knocked on the door last night and said the leak was plugged.

They are supposedly working on my ceiling now. The bad part of the ceiling looks like a 4 inch wide strip about 5-6 feet long, just along a drywall connection (gotta love my miniscule education in construction due to the family business). Anywho, it needs to be fixed. Rain in the living room isn't a great thing. Especially when it's from an air conditioner and not even the outside!

Hang on to the joblessness as long as possible. These non-medical jobs are frustrating 🙁

In other news, I'm on "call" with the OB this Sunday, so maybe I'll see some babies born! 🙂🙂

All jobs are frustrating, some just in more ways than one.

Example: I work as a research assistant doing human research. Today I woke my ass up at 6:30 a.m. so I could be at the hospital in time to set up and run my subject's 8:30 session. He didn't show up because he "slept in" but "super promises" to be there tomorrow. Man, I really could've used a Monday to sleep in too. Grrrr...😡

waking up at 6:30 AM is hard enough, but then your subject didn't even show up?!? that is definitely frustrating!!

on another note, I can't believe it's almost time for secondaries!!!! the first batch of apps goes out next week.... then i'll be drowning in secondaries for 22 schools!! :scared: anyone else worried?? i'm not looking forward to july! lol

So, does reading some of the threads on SDN ever freak ppl out like it does me? What I mean is, sometimes it seems like ppl are just looking for reasons to tell you that you are not going to get in or that you screwed something up. "black listed" seems to get thrown around a lot.

Ne ways, this thread seems happy and nice and I am excited to become doctors with you guys!!!!! (as long as I am not black listed 😉)

P.S. comments on MDapps appreciated! thanks!

Edit: One more thing, maybe it is just because I am a reapplicant and did not know what I was doing before, but does anyone else feel weird leaving so much space on their experience descriptions? I feel like I should be describing more or something...

Eh, I didn't ever break the 900 character limit when describing my activities/ECs on the AMCAS. I feel like the adcoms read enough of them to know when someone is just blowing smoke up their butts, so I kept it short and to the point. Once I ran out of ways to describe what I did sufficiently, I stopped.

BTW, this was the first time I've seen the 2013 thread slip all the way to the second page.

C'mon everyone. We're better than this!!! :meanie:

My dear fellow applicants,

I agree that this is one of the few happy threads! More happy threads, I say! I've been spending my evening scouring this website (I should probably stop doing that, I don't think it's good for my stress levels) and I have a rant bubbling up, so bear with me.
Who else feels like sometimes people complain about their stats just so they can be told that they'll get in anywhere they want? If I see another 3.7, 35 applicant bitch and moan about how he/she won't go anywhere, I'll chuck my lovely new computer out the window.
Also, who else feels like a lot of the gung-ho premeds just kind of go through a list of "expected" EC's and do them all, one by one, without actually caring one way or the other about any of them? I mean, I don't blame them, I blame the med schools for making us do this. It's ridiculous that there'll be people with great stats and amazing volunteer experience who are told "you should have done more research" or people who've been published like 18 times by the time they turned 12 who are being told they should volunteer at soup kitchens to have a shot in hell. People should stick with what they're actually passionate about, shouldn't they?
Anyways, that's all. Maybe you guys can understand this frustration...

As for happy topics, are we 2013ers Celtics or Lakers fans? Anyone watch the Euro cup for soccer? Anyone play Call of Duty (greatest game)? Discuss.

I just submitted (yay!!!!! :hardy:) but in a moment of passion I added like 5 more schools to the list, bringing my total to a whopping 29 schools and $1000 even. 😱 What was I thinking?!?!?! I guess it's better to be safe than sorry... my advisor's going to be mad. He told me to apply to 15 at a maximum. Hope he doesn't mind sending my LORs to 29 schools now (provided I don't get screened out anywhere). 😀

I for one love this thread as well. Can't wait to see you all on the interview trail and then start med school with you guys!

As for me, I'm a Celtics fan (mostly because green is my favorite color). I don't watch soccer. I don't play Call of Duty, but I am really into Grand Theft Auto IV right now (Xbox 360 version).

I am finally submitting today! I can't wait to be finished staring at my PS.

Sadly, I can't contribute much to the happy discussion as I don't watch basketball or soccer or play Call of Duty. 🙁 But Go Class of 2013!

soccer is great.. but im biased.. i grew up with it... my dad used to play pro back in the day

Ha. weird. so... are you applying to Ole Miss?

You mean UMC? Nope - I'm not a MS resident, just went to school there for four years. I thought about switching my residency a few years back (because the stats for UMC are waaaay appealing in terms of a good safety school) but LA (my home state) has two state med schools. I figured I'd be better off having two state schools to apply to instead of one...

Absolutely. When it freaks me out too much, I take a SDN vacay for a couple of days. You have to realize that only about 10% of the applying class each year uses SDN, and the majority of us tend to be in the upper percentiles stats-wise. Now, that said, one simple glance at my mdapps, and you will see that is not the case for me... but I am still hopeful and I think we will get into med school somewhere, despite the nay-sayers 😀

I completely agree. Kudos to everyone on this thread for being supportive of one another!

Oh, definitely. I think the haters on SDN are good practice for letting crap roll off your back though. I figure there will be plenty of nastiness coming our way when we get into the hospitals, and the thicker the skin and more firm our self-confidence (confidence, not arrogance) the better off we are. Just ignore the people on here evaluating your chances (assuming you have other less biased, more reliable sources).

Yes to euro cup, no to celtics, which makes me a traitor since I'm in Boston. Who's your fave in the euro cup?

Glad to see some action happening around here! It was just a few of us for so long. Welcome to all the new faces/names!

I agree that SDN (Pre-Allo esp) can be cut-throat. The threads such as this one are the ones I stick around for. 🙂 MCAT is pretty congenial as well.. most of the time. Of course you see problems every now and again... But I'll keep my mod status over there 🙂

Work is decent today... my first day with my bosses gone to conference. I need to study for my quiz tonight. Ugh, class. We were out on Thurs night and I got spoiled. Only 3 more times though, since the final is online. 2 weeks!

Yes, secondaries are overwhelming. I kinda hope they don't all come at once.. but then again, it's one step closer. I want as many as I can get! 👍

omg... forgot to tell you guys... i am scrubbing in on a surgery tomorrow.

Dr. _______ literally says, "I'll let you hold a retractor and everything"

*head explodes with excitement*

I'm always jealous when I hear about stuff like this. I just sat in the corner and tried to peer over shoulders. 😡

Really though, I was just excited to be wearing scrubs, mask, and cap. That was the coolest, most doctor-y I'd ever felt.

 It's good to know that someone else gets the same nerdy "doctor-y feeling when in those kinds of situations... lol the first time I observed a surgery (non-scrubbed in, strictly told to stand in a corner - next to the trash can - and ordered to "try not to touch anything") I still got a random person in the locker room to take a picture of me in my booties.

I might have just introduced you to a new level of dork.... oh well.

I'll tell you my dorkiest "try to feel doctor-y" moment:

I worked in a lab running samples and all that good stuff. As part of the job, I had to wear a long white lab coat (y'know, the typical kind you see everywhere). Well, one day I came into work in pleated khaki's, button up, and tie. I told my PI I just felt like getting dressed up one day, but really it was because I wanted to dress like the doctors I'd shadowed in the past. Yeah...

I felt pretty stupid after an hour and took the shirt and tie off. 😳

I'm glad I'm not the only nerd who gets excited about scrubbing in and/or sitting in. I eat it up!

I'm such a nerd - I have a "souvenir" from each of my first surgeries - (first watched, first scrubbed, etc). Getting up quite a collection. Haha. Scrub cap, bonnet, that type of thing. Pretty much anything they will let me take home that is clean.

My best friend picked on me the other night saying my next take-home would be a placenta. 😆
