Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, Spurs, that's complicated! Good luck and hope you get lots of pre-match offers 😀😀

(and then, of course, choose Baylor anyway 😉)

LOL, is that all? 🙂

Well, at least hopefully by tomorrow at midnight you can exhale about one school, my friend 🙂

Hopefully! Actually hopefully it will be 10PM for me!:luck:

I need a good early birthday present/ birthday present in general. I do not get to celebrate until next weekend, cuz of my art history research paper which I have not started researching yet along with my genetics midterm which is on my birthday....🙁

That's one of the good things about living on the west coast.

mid terms?!?!?!?

our finals are the week after next, haha

I started school on September 25th... So hah! Plus it is eight week of classes. Our finals start in three weeks...🙁
o only 8 weeks??? so if its trimesters you only go to school for 24 weeks?? I think we do two semesters of 16 weeks, idk though.

I bet I ate over 8,000 calories today. I don't get it, where does it all go?

I weigh just over 140 on a good day, by the way.

Seriously? 8000 calories in one day?!

For dinner I ate 4 pieces of pretty thick pizza, a panini, and a whole box of macaroni (+ the butter and milk / cheese used to make it).

Lunch, a pretty big grilled turkey sandwich, apple, huge bag of chips, four cookies. Breakfast was a protein shake, bacon, cereal, milk. Then I had snacks all day, add in drinks, probably up around 8000 yeah.

Yeah, that sounds like 8000. 😱

I probably eat that on a regular basis...fat ass.

Hey guys! Hope everyone had a great last couple of days - did I miss anything exciting?

LET got into Sinai 🙂 pianola gets to go see her sister on her visit to Cornell... oh, and I ruined the 5,000th post on this thread 😀

I'm sure there's a lot more, but that's what I've got off the top of my head.

Awesome! Congrats to LET and pianola!!!!!! :hardy:

And don't worry about the 5,000th post. I did the same thing today when my car went over 100,000 miles and I totally missed it. I didn't notice until it was at 100,002. 🙁

Oh, let me assure you, this was an EPIC fail! It wasn't even that I totally missed it... you really have to go look it up at the bottom of either page 99 or 100 😀

Nope, three quarters 10 weeks each plus one week of finals week.

pretty sure that my heaven involves being able to eat this much food without gaining a single ounce...completely jealous at the moment 😀

ana,im with you... totally hate you amph.. i spent the last three days eating less healthy (read: pizza, wings, drnks, fries) and i am already feeling it... getting dressed for my ballet class and feeling the tightness of my leotard more so than usual

Man, I'll do this sometimes, but I usually throw a couple of beers on top of it. It used to have no effect on me, but these days I can kinda tell the old belly ain't as flat as it used to be.... 🙁

I need to start running again...

I run in the mornings, which sucks sometimes cuz it is hard to wake up at 5. But morning runs are really refreshing, and the endorphin levels keep me happy for the rest of the day. But unfortunately I end up not stretching enough, and I cannot go running today because I hurt my navicular... Gah, I hate this. I finally got up to three miles again...

I did this in highschool which is why I weighed 240 in highschool!😱😱😱

Am I the only one on? Oh well, the weather is supposed to be 92 degrees today! Yuck, I like Socal and all, but 92 degrees in the middle of November is wrong...

I hate you. Where I'm at it's starting to be full-flung autumn. I miss the warm weather already. 🙁

No, I woke up sweating this morning because the heat accidentally came on and it's hot outside. I mean reallly hot...

Does anybody else get slightly frustrated when you see your top choice has invited more people to interview? I'm so happy that people are interviewing at my top choice but everytime I see someone post that they've gotten an invite my heart sinks a little bit.

Hey guys, for those of us who were fortunate enough to get multiple acceptances, how are you guys deciding where to go? There are two schools that I really really like and I just can't make up my mind.

The first school is small and "prestigious" (whatever that means). I was mainly attracted because the staff is so supportive of students and the class size is really small. Plus there is TONS of funding to do extra projects. There are also lots of affiliated hospitals and due to the small size there is almost no competition during years 3 and 4.

The second school is in a SUPER nice location but the class size is large. All the students seem really nice also. They also have some great affiliated institutions that reserve residency spots just for that medical school. And the affiliated hospital is one of the biggest trauma centers in the united states.

Both schools have pluses and minuses. Any ideas?

Oh, and I thought of the perfect song for if I get rejected from my top choice:

I could hardly believe it
When I heard the news today
I had to come and get it straight from you
They said you were leavin'
Someone swept your heart away
From the look upon your face I see it's true
So tell me all about it, tell me 'bout the plans you're makin'
Then tell me one thing more before I go

Tell me how am I supposed to live without you
Now that I've been lovin' you so long
How am I supposed to live without you
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been livin' for is gone

I didn't come here for cryin'
Didn't come here to breakdown
It's just a dream of mine is coming to an end
An how can I blame you
When I built my world around
The hope that someday we'd be so much more than friends
And I don't wanna know the price I'm gonna pay for dreaming
When even now it's more than I can take

Tell me how am I supposed to live without you
Now that I've been lovin' you so long
How am I supposed to live without you
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been livin' for is gone

And I don't wanna face the price I'm gonna pay for dreaming
Now that your dream has come true

Tell me how am I supposed to live without you
Now that I've been lovin' you so long
How am I supposed to live without you
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been livin' for is gone

Haha me too! It's getting late and the chances of getting an interview invite are slimmer now. Except for UC Davis who hasn't even started sending out interview invites!!!

Wait for the financial aid packages!

Congratulations on your multiple acceptances! I think I know which school you're talking about for the first one. 😉 As for me, I'm definitely holding out for my top choice (Columbia) and financial aid packages to make any final decisions. I have also thought about things I was looking for in a medical school and compared the schools I've been accepted at to this "ideal" fantasy school.

Do you prefer small class size or large? Is location something that is really important to you? Are you interested in doing a lot of extra projects (i.e. would you actually take advantage of the extra funding available to you)? There are endless questions that you can ask yourself, and eventually you'll figure out what you should do. Congratulations again and good luck!

Yeah it's definitely really hard to rank schools. I had to remind myself that I would really like pretty much all of them to some extent because I want to go to med school, and hey, they're med schools, so they'll all study the stuff I want to study and have the kinds of professors I'd like to work with. Plus, if I applied there, chances are there was something about the school that I liked.

I think the deal is that you have to avoid the "hey, its a med school! Med school is awesome! Therefore this school is awesome!" mentality. You can get an amazing education at any US M.D. school (after all, it is what you make of it, and YOU make yourself into a good doctor, no school will do that for you). So what I think about is this:

- How did it "feel"? How were the students? Did they seem happy? Did they seek out interviewees and tried to be helpful? Do they have a life outside of school? Are they supportive or do they seem kind of competitive and intense? How was the administration? Did they seem supportive and nice? Were your interviewers nice? Did they seem excited about the school?

- How was the campus and the location? Is it somewhere you can imagine yourself for 4 years? Is it close to home (if you're into that sort of thing) or easily reachable (i.e. is there an airport nearby)? Is the campus too rural/too urban? How are the facilities? Do lecture halls look super-cramped or are they nice? The library? Is there housing/ how is the housing? Are apartments in the area expensive? Is it easy to navigate on foot or do you need a car (gas = expensive, students = poor)? Are you totally isolated or is there stuff around it? Is the area sketchy?

- Do they focus more on research or primary care, and does that focus work for you? Is it more lecture-based or small-group based? How much PBL is there? How many hours do students typically spend in lecture? How easy is it to get notes from the lectures if you don't feel like going (are they online, is there a scribe program, are they podcasted, videocasted?). How is the curriculum set up? Is it in blocks, or do you have a bunch of classes at once? How much support is there if you're having trouble with your classes? How often are students tested? What is the grading scheme?

- How are the hospitals? Remember you'll probably do most of your clinicals there. Is the patient population diverse?

etc etc. Anyways, these are the things I think about when I start analyzing schools....

Hey Ayushman, this is the list of questions that I ask myself when "ranking" schools in my head. Hope they help!

Yay! I just got a call today and I was asked to come back on Sunday to record some more stuff in the recording studio! :hardy: Fun!

That is awesome and exciting... A LOT better than studying for a genetics midterm...

By the way chad, what does your sig mean?

Thanks! I am so excited about this - doing little things like this is EXACTLY what I wanted to do for my year off, and it's awesome that it's actually happening. If I get a hold of the recordings I'll try to post them up here so you guys can see what I've been working on.

Re: my signature. 😀 It's a quote from the musical, Into the Woods, by Stephen Sondheim. There is a song where all the characters run onstage and say little bits of wisdom, and this is the one spoken by Jack (who sells his pet cow for 5 magical beans, one of which grows into the beanstalk that takes Jack to the land of the giants). Other little bits of wisdom (that didn't make the cut for my signature) include:

"Slotted spoons don't hold much soup, but can catch the potato." --Jack's Mother (actually she speaks the first part in Act I and the second part in Act II, but it works well together)

"The prettier the flower the farther from the path." --Little Red

"You may know what you need but to get what you want better see that you keep what you have." --The Baker's Wife

"Opportunity is not a lengthy visitor." --Cinderella

Can you tell it's one of my favorite shows? 😉

I have choices!!!!!

UTSW: One of my TOP choices!
UTMB: I loved this school also.

The only way this would get better would be if I were not in the arts library researching, and could go home and celebrate!!!!!!!

Congratulations funkydrmonkey!!!!!! :hardy::hardy::hardy::hardy::hardy:

Congrats Funk!

And that is the ULTIMATE dancing monkey.... even better than the banana dance

Thank you. That awesome monkey made it even better. I had to use every ounce of self-restraint from screaming and dancing like the monkey in the middle of the arts library.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

When I was in middle school, we had this "monkey club" at my church youth group, where only select people were invited. Each of us was known as a different colored monkey (or "monki" as we spelled it). I was the "Green Monki."

Oh, the things we do when we're pre-adolescents.
