Thanks Chubby😍

thanks, congrats to you too! the is the best feeling i have had in MY LIFE

:soexcited:Woot blues, wjetty and long story! :soexcited:

University of Illinois..... Whoa. 3rd Time is a charm.
yay chuck's right foot, everyone seems to be getting in this year!
Congrats guys 🙂

Hey funkmonk, do you still have any interviews coming up, or right now are you still just sitting on your UTSW acceptance?

Also, where's jgberken been lately? Haven't seen her in seemingly ages...

thanks funky and spurs. by the way, spurs why are we doing so badly this year, i hope manu and tp get better soon.

Well hey, I think we're doing great all things considered 🙂 After TP went down, I didn't see how we could beat ANYBODY and really thought we might be 1-10 or 2-9 at this point, so 5-6 is still about the best I think we could hope for. George Hill and Roger Mason aren't TP and Manu, but they're playing better than I could have expected, and I think they'll be much better players for us come playoff time for having had this experience.

yeah, i guess so. it just kind of sucks they are BOTH hurt. yeah i know, they are playing pretty good. hopefully by that time, both manu and tp will be good. it's so good that since i've come to america i have other people to share with about my love for the spurs with

Hehe yeah, the tradeoff is you have to deal with the haters who are tired of seeing Tim Duncan's mug winning stuff every other year 😛

I have Dartmouth on 12/4, Sinai on 11/15 and Case/CCLCM on 1/12 and 1/13.😀

I am cancelling the rest (Conn, Cinci, USF, AECOM), because I would go to UTSW over those schools... No offense, but I cannot justify the difference in tuition...

anyone want to write a 7page book report for me? LOL due tues.. really not in the mood lol

Which book?

By the way, does anyone know what this smilie means?:xf:

I figure it can mean a few things:

"I just love the fact that your school is located in the middle of nowhere :xf: (fingers crossed behind back)"

"I hope that funkymonkey gets into Baylor (keeps fingers crossed):xf:"

:xf::xf:I want to hear good news from a couple of schools this week :xf::xf:

Awww, thank you pianola. That would be awesome!

And now the smilie makes a lot more sense!

By the way, have any of you guys watched Curious George. I just watched it today for the first time and I am thinking WOW! 😀(Before anyone says anything, I know my avatar is the Dr. Curious George, and it is shameful that I have not seen it before, but I do not have a TV at my apartment...) Plus it has a lot of music by Jack Johnson, who in my opinion is really good...

Jack Johnson is great!

Baylor is AWESOME, pianola! Like...I never knew it was that cool.

Heh, that makes two of us! I remember exploring Baylor's website when I first decided to apply and thinking it was cool. But the interview day was just great and solidifed my opinion. My mom tried to talk me out of applying to Baylor because she thought I didn't have a shot.

First time I've been glad I didn't listen to my mom 😉.

But you know what's weird? All these random people keep advising me not to go to Baylor. I'm still officially undecided but was leaning toward Baylor. But then all these random folks keep saying it's all name and no substance.

But for someone who's relatively self-directed (like me) I feel like it might just be a great option. So I'm still kind of undecided and I'm not sure who I'm supposed to listen to or believe.

Spurs, do you have any thoughts on the matter? You can PM me if you'd feel more comfortable doing so.

At least people know where you have been accepted to. I keep telling my friends about Southwestern, and everyone keeps looking at me, and then I have to explain that it is in Dallas, and then they lecture me on how Texas sucks... I have almost given up on humanity...:meanie:

No, actually, in Florida everyone's like "So are you going to UF or UMiami? Where's Baylor? What's that? Why would you consider it over UF?" FTR, USF is a perfectly good school and it is NOT my last choice...

I actually had a teacher ask me where I got accepted for medical school and I told her where and she was like "Oh wow, so you're going to go to UF, right?" I mean, sure, UF is definitely a great option but it's not exactly like I'm deciding betwen UF and Caribbean schools...😕😕😕 ya know? Baylor's a good school and people around here just haven't heard of it. It's kind of irritating that no one here has heard of it.

HOWEVER, Florida's pretty similar to Texas in a lot of ways, so I don't think Floridians are gonna go hating on Texas. I really liked Texas when I visited, though. I felt very much like I was still in Florida 😛. I could see why Californians might kind of say "Texas, ugh". Although to be honest, I'd rather be in Texas next year than in California...CA is just too far from home!!

Anyway....we'll see. Florida schools have a lot to offer as well so I may very well end up in-state.

OK, this post was really long.

I agree. QFT! But what is funny is that in TX there are at least 3000 people who would kill for my spot, and yours, which is really funny! Oh well, I will be the one attending med school, not them, so it does not matter if they care for the location or not. It is ultimately my choice, because I will have to live there. Plus houses are CHEAP in Dallas. If (I really hope I do not) get rejected by California, then I might buy a house, considering it is dirt cheap and If it goes up in value by 50k in 4 years, that is basically my whole tuition right there!😀

Yeah, well, I'm in the habit of going to schools very few people have heard of (except regionally and in academic circles), so Baylor wouldn't exactly be my first.

No one in California knows much about UF. No one in Florida knows much about where I went to school in CA. No one in either Florida OR California knows about Baylor.

So I've stopped caring, I guess 😛. I can't afford to 😉

I guess...

So Spurs, what up?

Yay! So, what's new Spurs?

Lol, sorry guys, I'm busy writing my huge term paper for History of China, so I'm on-and-off here 😛 Yeah, supposedly, I got accepted to Baylor on Thursday, though it was such a short 45 sec conversation w/ Dr. Greenberg that I'm still kind of in shock, and I don't think I'll truly believe that I got in until I get the physical package in the mail! Also, I must say that acceptance is making me pretty lackadaisical when it comes to writing this paper... 😛

OK, keep in mind I just got in like 2 days ago. So I'm FAR from any authority on the matter, as the extent of me looking into the school any further has consisted of me jumping up and down with my family Thursday and then going to the Cheesecake Factory with my girlfriend last night 🙂

First of all, there are some definite advantages to going to a "name school" that simply can't be denied. For those who are interested in medical research, more NIH money comes to the schools with the big names- that's just a fact. Furthermore, you know the faculty will be some of the most esteemed and knowledgable in the entire country. It's not as if going to a "non-name" school means that the faculty there WON'T be knowledgable, but the faculty at a "name school" are often people who are truly at the forefront of medicine in the country-there has to be some advantage to learning directly from these people. I personally went to some of the MS2 lectures with my student host when I was at Baylor for my interview, and I was blown away by how great and interactive one of the instructors was- and the other two I saw weren't bad either. I know attending lectures isn't required at most med schools nowadays, but some of the instructors I saw made me feel like I would WANT to get out of bed in the morning to go hear them lecture!

But more importantly, I've never understood how a school could be "all name no substance." Obviously a school must have done some awesome stuff to ascend to its status level. In Baylor's case, I think there are two things that really stand out about Baylor, and they're connected: 1) The condensed pre-clinical curriculum, meaning we'll be getting an extra half-year in the hospital to help us iron out exactly what kind of residency we want to go into; and 2) We get to do the clinical years in the Texas Medical Center, with connections to a bunch of the absolute top hospitals in the country. Being affiliated with so many excellent hospitals really seems like it gives students ways to tailor their medical education in a truly unique way. I'd really like to hear how those two factors can be seen as "no substance."

I'd really struggle with going to a school JUST because of a name... but I really think Baylor's got a lot more going for it than that. Beyond what I said above, every single member of the faculty was extremely friendly while I was there, and each student seemed to be unique and welcoming throughout the entire weekend. Every single person I met seemed to love being where they were, and I get a similar feeling from my friends who have gone there-they all LOVE the environment there. Between all of the concrete reasons and the friendly environment, I can see a TON of ways that Baylor could be a great place for me.

That said, right now I think that Baylor has a few question marks. I think most people would be a little wary about a place that just dismissed its president, and that the construction for its new main teaching hospital is running into some problems. I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on any news surrounding Baylor, as it seems like there's a bunch of political BS going on in the administration right now. I hope that wouldn't affect the med students, but like I said, I'll be paying close attention.

OK! If you made it this far through this mammoth post... congrats, you deserve a cookie! 🙂 In the end, while I'm a little concerned about the environment surrounding Baylor right now, I really do love everything the school has to offer. There are certainly other very good schools around the country, but Baylor's certainly a great option compared to just about any other school in the country as well, IMHO 🙂

EDIT: btw, funkmonk, in case you're wondering, I'm still very much considering UT Southwestern if I get accepted; both schools are top-notch in my opinion, and it'd be hard to sever my connections with UT Southwestern... I'd have a very tough choice if I got lucky enough to get into both schools! 🙂

Totally 100% agree on all points. 150% even. I sat in on a lecture, too, and I was SUPER impressed. I kept thinking "YES, I could LEARN here. I feel very comfortable in this environment." And the MS1 I stayed with said it was one of the worse lectures...heh, I was really impressed. And yes, I think in *certain* instances a name can be very helpful.

Heh, my only other acceptances are at places where the dean is less than 1 year old (one was dismissed, one retired, and I'm not sure about the other one). Heh, so go figure.

Thanks for your post, Spurs! It'd be nice to see you in class next year, perhaps 🙂. You have a lot of good thoughts on the matter.

PS. Where's my cookie? 😉

Darn, another board I frequent actually has a "cookie" smilie... will this do? 😀:spam:

HAH! SPAM!?!?! 😀😀

hahahaha. OK, ok. I'll save it for a rainy day or something.

1) I know how that feels...

2) Don't worry about it. You do not need to explain it to me.😉 Go ahead and celebrate! You got accepted to Baylor which is an amazing school, with an awesome curriculum! Live it up, and never feel like you need to explain yourself to anyone. Remember, you will be going to the med school, so you need to see what is the best fit for you!👍😀

Hehe, thanks, but seriously, those two schools are like 1a and 1b on my list right now, and I'm not even totally sure which one is 1a! I'm totally just celebrating getting into ONE of them right now, but I think it could likely come down to second look weekends to decide which is my top choice if I got into both. Not trying to "explain myself," just giving you a heads up 🙂

Also, awww, pianola, you don't want my spam? 🙁

Heh, I've never had spam, actually. It just doesn't seem quite as appealing as a cookie, somehow 😛.

Where is UTSW located? Does it have an undergraduate campus associated with it? (Didn't apply there...)

It's in Dallas, don't think it really has an undergrad campus associated with it. The big draws at UTSW (to me) are the fact that they have some really high-powered research going on there (just as much funding as Baylor), plus a really distinguished faculty- they mention their four Nobel Lauriates about every 5 minutes 😛 In addition, Parkland Hospital is outstanding; it's the only county hospital in all of Dallas county, so it's big and gets a bunch of cool cases. Plus there are numerous other hospitals in the medical center as well, of course.

Good to know, good to know.

Heh, is it a bit obvious I'm taking every possible opportunity to respond to topics on SDN to put off writing my paper? 😛

EDIT: Lol, case in point...

i really really wanted to apply to texas schools, but i don't have meet the prereqs 🙁 will just have to move to texas for my residency!

I scored a vanderbilt interview somehow! Didn't see that one coming 🙂

Congrats to all of the new members of the class of 2013!

I hope Oklahoma beats Texas Tech. That way SC will move up in the poles.

Is anyone here Turkish by any chance... I need some help with my homework...

Sorry, not turkish.

Azeri, Uzbek, Uyghur, or Armenian by any chance...(they speak Turkish or some form of it...) I don't understand the genitive-possessive compounds...

Maybe I should read my book instead...

So berk, how is it going? Are you done with interviews for now, or do you still have more to go to?

It looks like you cancelled a lot of interviews while I was gone.

Anyway, I had what might be termed an OMGWTFBBQ moment today and I really needed a place to share it because most people just don't quite understand the magnitude of the craziness I encountered.

So as you may or may not have been following, I teach the MCAT for a test-prep company that will remain nameless (unless I have already made the mistake of posting its name elsewhere on this forum.) So today, this new student comes into my class and the following conversation ensues:

Me: "Hi, I'm pianola, you must be new to my section. What's your name?"

Bob: "I'm Bob*."

Conversation ensues and I tell "Bob" that I'm a graduate student.

Bob: "Yeah, I'm in John Doe's section."

Me: "Oh, yeah, I know John Doe. He's a great teacher."

Bob: [insert sneer here] "...uh...John doesn't even have his bachelor's degree yet."

Me: "Well, John has studied both in the US and in the UK. He moved here rather recently. He's an excellent teacher."

Bob: [insert second sneer here] "Yeah, well...he didn't even get a secondary from UCSF. He was rejected pre-secondary from UCSF."

Me: [I'm thinking WTF?? That makes him a bad teacher and/or candidate for medical school???] "But John isn't even a California resident. It's extremely hard to get a secondary from UCSF -- they screen their applications. Tons of candidates with extremely good qualifications get turned away all the time -- from all states. It's one of the most difficult schools to get into in this country."

Bob: "So John still has a shot at schools like Harvard and Duke?"

Me: "...yeah, absolutely, as far as I know. As good as anyone else."

Positively mind-boggling. Can you imagine judging your MCAT teacher based on whether or not they got a secondary from UCSF? 😱😱

*Name changed to protect the very strange, strange student in question.

Lol poor guy... but that just goes to show how little information about this process is really spread to pre-meds. The undergrad institutions really don't do a good job of making it clear what the reality of med school admissions is.

Anyway, that guy was a tool. Just because SF rejects someone does not mean they are a bad MCAT teacher... I remember there was a 41 MCATer who got rejected from SF... does that make him a bad med school applicant also? Wow, those are the kinds of people you hope gets a 16J on the MCAT... we are going into medicine... we need compassion... our egos will be inflated enough after we become doctors, but people like Bob, their heads will explode from having such humongous egos.
