Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I would love to go to the South...My dad did his masters at UT (He still likes his Vols)... The South just hates me... Vandy Waitlist... Emory Cold Shoulder... UNC Rejection....Oh well, I have UVA to look forward to! Hopefully I can come back in a month and put UVA acceptance😀
Virginia is the North...its north of north carolina, it has to be the North right?

Haha, yes, that is my consolation. No, she detests science. 😉

She's a double French and English major.

What is with your family and French? But wow, that is cool. But remember, you will be Dr. Pia Nola MD, not Ph.D.😎...err...unless you decide to do a Ph.D....

But your alma mater is a REALLY good school, and Vandy is an awesome med school...

Actually I met an orthopod during winter break who did his ortho residency at JHU 😱 and when I told him I interviewed at Vandy, he told me, WHAT! Vanderbilt is such a low tier school... why would you ever wanna go there... I did not have the heart to correct him since he teaches at UCLA and knows a few people on the adcom 😳

He clearly has some kind of complex.

And I think that Vandy is one of those schools that is strong but has not made as many inroads outside the region as it should. Also, Californians are oblivious.

Uva - give funk an acceptance. Now!
I hope so:luck: Thanks😀
Virginia is the North...its north of north carolina, it has to be the North right?

Nope... it is south of the Mason Dixon line...

Oh and my brother loves Virginia... his hero is Robert E. Lee😕...Don't ask, cuz none of us know... he is a 13 year old Civil War enthusiast/buff, and when we were in Richmond last summer, He was sleeping in the car when we passed by Robert E. Lee's house and when we told him about it, he made my dad drive back to it, so that he could see it for himself...

Okay... I have no idea why I just thought of this anecdote...

Ooh I'm definitely not a Californian, though. I moved here last year. I lived in a couple of parts of the east coast before then (New York and Boston). I'm sure the South will be totally shocking and different but I actually really look forward to it. The Republicans scare me a little though. So far I've lived in the most liberal, educated bubbles in the US so that will be really different.

Let, Wait, Democrats are educated😱😛

Chubbs, NC went Democrat last election, remember...

I'm really curious to see if you'll be saying that after you move here...I feel like Californians are more likely to mind the south than southerners are to mind California. But I'm rather biased because of my own experiences.

I don't mind the South, personally, but I could see why Californians might not like it...

Just my $0.02.

I feel like Californians are likely to mind anything that isn't California. Same for those from NYC.

What is with your family and French?

Well might you ask. I guess my sister and I just had a good high school French teacher or something 😛.

Well, LET, I hope you'll find educated people in and around Vanderbilt/Nashville. It's funny, my mom is totally out to get me out of the South. I like the weather here a lot, though, so I'm not sure how much I want to leave on any sort of permanent basis. But we'll see.

In terms of differencese between the South and California, I think the politics was what bothered me most when I moved to California. I was liberal before I got there...and I still vote liberal. But it's totally different to be a Florida liberal than it is to be a California liberal, I think.

I'm definitely interested to hear your impressions, though. Of all the things I regret most this cycle, not taking my Vanderbilt interview is probably #1 on my list. So you'll have to let me know how it is 🙂.

I think this is probably a very true statement, as generalizations go. I think you're probably right.

I guess... maybe I am not a true Californian either... I spend 1/2 a year in the Philippines, 1.5 years in the Caribbean, 4 years in Texas and 2.5 years in Chicago.. That is 7.5 years basically 1st-mid 8th grade that I spent outside the California bubble... maybe that is why I like other places also... Although I did not like NYC at ALL when I visited... but then again I had just come back from Dartmouth and New Hampshire is about as different from NYC as [insert cliche about opposites here]

WOAH i was gone for 2 hours and u guys made 2 pages of posts

we're def gonna have to move our thread to Allo next year to stay in touch...

Agreed. This way when we graduate from med school, we can see what inane things we fretted over as premeds!

Oh and I wonder who will get the coveted 8000th post?

True... although I never understood what the difference between a Florida liberal and a Cali liberal is... Is California more conservative?

Hey yall. Can I ask what I missed?

Wow, cool. That's really neat. Yeah, to be fair, most of the Californians I've known came from California, went to college in California, and proceeded to stay in California. So I'm unquestionably biased.

I love journals... especially ones that are more readable and not just black and white text.

This one has case studies, mystery dxs, and really cool pictures/imaging to go with the cases.

plus new developments, vaccines, and other things interesting to the pediatric-minded.

BD: Talk about California, crazy families, first gen-doctoral degrees, the South vs. California, moving our thread to allo next year....and a few random political thoughts.

Yay, my new "Contemporary Pediatrics" arrived in the mail today!!

Oh! I had a mild heart attack... I thought you ordered your Pediatric textbook already... In my mind, I was thinking...Gunner alert!...

Haha, no kind of the opposite, actually.

A Florida liberal doesn't have transgender rights anywhere on his/her radar, usually. They're not talking about 'queer' people because the terminology hasn't really made its way over (by and large). A Florida liberal isn't going to be 'celebrating the differences between diverse groups' and Florida liberals tend to support the idea of 'color blindness' whereas Californians generally may not -- that said, Floridia liberals will probably adamantly oppose discrimination of any sort (particularly in an economic sense). A Florida liberal is very concerned with fiscal/financial issues. A Florida liberal will probably support gay marriage (at least in some form) and be against abortion. <-- the last sentence may be common to both California and Florida.

A Florida conservative will often (not always) be religious. He/she will often be against abortion (the extent of opposing abortion varies). Florida conservatives tend to be socially conservative, grounded in religion. So, more socially conservative than their California counterparts. Like their Californian counterparts, Florida conservatives dislike taxation.

Those are the main points in a nutshell. As I see them, anyway.

Interesting... I would have thought that since Floridans (sp?) have Key West, the liberals would be more pro "queer" rights.... interesting...

When I went to high school, not a single person I knew was openly gay/queer. So either there are no gay/queer people where I live (yeah right) or they're much more uncomfortable coming out here.

And I live in one of the more liberal pockets of Florida. Relatively speaking.

It's just a totally different atmosphere, I guess.

:zip:

CRB, you stole it from me...🙁

Also, one last thing: I think Florida is one of the few states that's banned gay adoption (re: Florida and queer issues).

USF. Haven't really heard too much about Tampa so I'm guessing its not exactly the prototypical Florida experience 🙂

Yeah, Tampa's a bigger city. I loved my USF interview day. They have beautiful facilities and the students were super, super-nice. I hope you have a great day. They don't make you walk around too much in the afternoon because they bus you everywhere 😉. They also give you some nice free stuff.

So yeah, a big fan of USF, my second acceptance 😉

I've vacationed there my whole life. Esp when I lived on the cosst, it was only a good hr and fifteen to the Fla line. Lotto, anyone?

Woohoo! Yay for Florida vacations.

Well, there was only 1 guy at my high school and one girl who was supposedly... she was rather manly so it was hard to think otherwise...😳 In fact, I do not think I have come across too many in my whole life... The only other openly gay person I have come across, besides that guy from my high school, was the guy sitting next to me on the plane who told me that he came to NYC to visit his boyfriend...

It was actually a bit shocking for me, because I am around somewhat socially conservative people, or perhaps, only straight people, usually, so people do not talk about it very often... but I had a very interesting conversation with me, and he recommended that I see MILK, which I did... I didn't really like it much though...😳 although at the end when they superimposed the actors with the actual people, I thought that was pretty cool...
