awwwwwwwwwwwww yeah!!!! back from a nice workout in the gym...blasted every inch of my back, traps, and deltoids...and then worked it out on a spin bike!!!!! Now I am ready to start the day....lunch and then off to the Philly Prison System 😱😱😱 to enroll participants into my study

which spawns a topic for discussion: what luxuries are you lookong forward to affording as an attending?

For me? A maid and at least bi-monthly massages.

Eventually, a part-time nanny. I want to raise my kids myself but I know i'll need some trusted help for the shuffling around to dance, soccer, etc. An all-in-one maid, cook, nanny would be best.

Hmmmm...so to answer your question:

assuming I have bebe's kids of my own: 1. definitely a nanny/housekeeper...I know my parents housekeeper really helped my parents alot when i was growing up...but then again if my parents are still alive I could just use them...but I don't need anyone to cook...how bout I come cook for you...hahahah LOL

2. Playing on nice golf courses, tickets to sporting events
3. financially stable enough travel where I want

I really dont want that much...just a house, 2.5 kids, and another golden retriever named Boomer!!!!! (awww I miss him)

Yeah, it feels like they oughta just play it the week after the conference championships; it seems like the break is doing more to knock the steam out of the game than anything.

I just realized the Spurs or Lakers have represented the Western conference 9 out of the last 10 season. What the heck. Share the wealth!

Nope, none here. Yet. That I can remember.

I don't know what my indulgence would be. I was kind of thinking I'd spend almost any extra money I had on my kids and their educational pursuits. Maybe I'd go out to the Melting Pot more 😀.
 
So ummmm, it's 85 degrees in Glendale, Arizona. Our team is in the Superbowl. I'm watching The Shield Season 1. Oh, I'm officially in med school. And the kicker is that I'm also on SDN.

😍😍😍 I went there for dessert with Mr. Nola last night. It's not so expensive if you split a small size chocolate fondue. (We got the Yin and Yang one)

I think he was in ecstasy. I'm pretty sure I was, too.
 
I'm actually concerned about "indulgences" when my huuby-to-be and I are attendings... Of course there's nothing wrong with a well deserved treat once in awhile, but I'm afraid of the effects of actually having money when raising kids. I was raised in a lower middle class home. Money was always tight and I feel like that experience helped me to appreciate what I've been given. I think working a few part time jobs during high school (as a seafood clerk, cashier, and ER liaison in my case) kept me grounded. I'm not saying that one must have financial hardship to get these benefits, but I know that I'll want my kids to develop these attributes somehow.

Yeah, I definitely understand that. I guess in my family we practiced thrift with everything (EVERYTHING). You don't buy things unless there are coupons involved 😉.

But at the same time, I think having the means to provide excellent educational opportunities for your child can be a good thing, too. IMO, there's a difference between having the money to pay for braces, summer school, and piano lessons than having the money to pay for a new car, a fancy new computer with all the gadgets, and an expensive cruise in the Carribean.

But I know what you're talking about.
 
Yeah, I am grateful I will be able to give the kids what I think they need (braces, private school dependent on the area we live in), but definitely want to be careful about over-indulging. Everything they NEED, not everything they want 🙂
 
my best friend growing up's dad was the most well respected orthopedic surgeon in our town in a very lucrative practice. They were model parents - and the kids were raised just as down to earth as us "normal" folks. I definitely want that type experience for mykids.

You're both right. It will be nice not to stress too much about paying for an excellent education, health related issues, etc... That makes me feel better 👍

Haha, for some reason I'm reminded of one of my classmates whose father threw a $20,000 sweet sixteen birthday party for her (rented a hotel, fondue fountains, the works). My entire high school class (400 people) was invited.

She's now in in medical school (at a prestigious institution). Wonder what will happen to her kids.

very true...my parents worked hard to transcend the sociopolitical boundaries associated with growing up in the Jim Crowe south. Coming from meager beginnings with hard working parents definitely facilitated the development of the attributes of which you speak. I did not get over easy either, despite not growing up in a similar environment. They were sure to instill similar values in me...and I am quite happy they did.

definitely a maid/cook/nanna and massages. I also want an apartment in nyc with large windows and a chihuahua. oh! and i want to be able to cab whenever I feel like it without worrying about money.
being able to help out my parents will also be very nice.

agreed! no video games, soda, or much junk food for my kid(s). boy or girl there will be dancing starting with ballet and then options of ballroom or swimming (for the boy mostly lol). good grades are a must lol

Oh, I know what you mean...I wonder/worry about that a lot. Especially since my relationship is still so new!

I think maybe the arguing part comes for several reasons including too much time together without separate interests and too much time apart leading to diverging interests. You have to have a very fine balance that's not always attainable when there's an outside world that demands you be available at certain times.

Yeah, soda will probably be out for my kids. Haha, my s.o. is a worse health nut than I am. I think I might make him responsible for the nutrition part 😉.

And YES, my kids are taking piano (assuming I can afford one by the time they're 5 or 6). Also, if their father speaks a different language (like, oh, say, Thai) then I will learn it and we will all speak it as a family 😀.

i think it's also dealing with each other's individual crazies... and being on different pages since men can be so damn confusing at times.

Aww, thanks ar. I'm holding out for med school. For the last year I've been unwilling to get involved with anyone since I knew I was moving. I know the jury is tied up on whether two-doctor relationships or relationships w one person in a different area of work are better... but personally. I think someone in the field would be a better match for me.

basically.. i think also if the female is the doc and the male isn't, it may be a little easier. men tend to be a little less crazy than girls. I don't think i could deal with someone going through med school and residency because I would feel neglected (i think...) but i think my bf can deal with me going through it. he's just so much more chill than I am....🙄
 
that's true... probably IS easier that way (female doc).

And not to say the mixed professions don't work for some... I've just always thought I'd end up with a doc. Who knows? 🙂
