Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
O yes, Good morning everyone!

Est-ce que vous devez passer un exam?

Today? Nah, I'm a grad student in the sciences. I majored in music and French though. (Yeah, I had no idea I'd be taking the pre-med route).

Sorry for causing you to celebrate prematurely 😳

Read my EDIT above.

Thank you for your help, though!!! 🙂🙂🙂

I definitely want to wait until Im done with residency... also, i am in no way ready for a baby now and I doubt i will be until about after residency anyway lol.. thankfully mr. ar agrees - if we stay together, we want to do everything on our terms, whenever we are ready 😍

I'm glad you're feeling better, ar! Yeah, I just don't see how it's gonna be possible for me until after residency. But we'll see what happens.

Yeah, I figure living expenses will probably be less than $20K per year in Houston...maybe considerably less with Mr. Nola's help? Maybe I'm making this up?

(Baylor OOS tuition is about $28.5K)

Oh YEAH... I was wondering why you were going to need so much money, and then I remembered not everyone is from Texas 😳

Are you going to go for TX residency?

in all honesty, with careers like ours, there never is a good time to have a kid! You just have to make it work whenever the time is right for you... and your SO of course 😉

<snip>
oh and totally got a B- on my economics midterm, but out professor gave us a whole talk about how he doesnt care now, but only needs to see that we understand the basics by the time the final comes, so i stillhave chance at an A... or at least A- lol
thank god i dont have ot worry about grades..

i am however feeling much better! it was just a cold and it is mostly gone now. yay 😀

Awesome one both counts!!👍😀

Yeah, I e-mailed Ms. Tejas (the person in charge of residency concerns) last night.

But it might cost a bit to get residency in the first place.

Yeah there was this huge elephant in the room when I mentioned this to Mr. Nola, cause there is in fact a way that I could get Texas residency after my 2nd or 3rd year of medical school. A way that doesn't involve buying property...We didn't discuss the "M" word in relation to tuition, though.

I can't imagine getting married for tuition purposes, though....that'd be absolutely insane.

This is true... though these days you shouldn't have much trouble finding a place to buy (at least that's what I'd imagine...)

And I must admit that the person in charge of residency concerns in Texas is Ms. Tejas 😀

Ooooh... I didn't know he was from Texas! (and obviously I was typing my last post as you were typing yours)

Yeah... awkward. 😳

Can you establish residency as a renter or do you actually have to purchase property?

Haha, so...that's Spanish for Texas, right? 😳 Yeah, yeah. I totally chose the wrong language to major in. Yeah.

No, p, 32K + 8.5K

Still may not be enough... but...

Haha, I figured that out after I posted. I'm such an idiot. 😛 Good thing Baylor didn't know that when they admitted me I guess :meanie::meanie:

Yeah he was born in Texas. He did grad school in Texas (graduated in December). I don't know if he's still a resident.

In any case if he got a job there for a year he'd be a resident.

Again, marriage for tuition purposes is absolutely insane. Unless you KNOW for sure you were going down the marriage route already. Which...I wanted to wait as long as possible to be sure 😳😳. So I dunno.

You have to buy something. The question I want to ask (but haven't quite gotten there yet) is "can I buy some land in the middle of nowhere that's pretty cheap? Or do I actually have to live in the place that I've bought?" Mr. Nola said it might be the cheapest way out.

Renting won't cut it 🙁

I've got a bridge you might be interested in...

my parents got the tax info yesterday. I think I'm screwed for financial aid. Loans here I come 🙁

Huh, there's an idea that I've never heard of. Of course, the problem is that (I'd imagine) nobody's selling some little plot of land out in the middle of nowhere... everyone's selling either developed land w/ a house on it, or some large expanse of land.

And of course, buying a condo or house would give you options down the road. If you don't want to stay in Texas, you'd probably have an easier time selling back your condo or house and get some return on your investment than you would trying to sell back a random plot of land in the middle of nowhere. If you DO want to stay in Texas for residency somewhere in the TMC, you won't have to go looking for housing again.

*sigh* Good luck w/ that call!

Medical spanish is an elective thing at UMMC, but I'm soooo taking it. Way too important around here.

Yeah, it's an elective here too, but it's also way too important to not take I think.

Yeah, I knew that going in... luckily, Baylor only requires the parents' section of the FAFSA if you're interested in need-based loans, so I didn't have to wait for my dad to get on his taxes. I mean, of course I'm INTERESTED in need-based... but there's just no way I was getting any of that help 🙁

Yeah those are really good points. Things I hadn't thought of.

it's difficult because my parents are financially "comfortable" (it's assets that kill us) - but that doesn't mean I am! And they have two other kids to put through college behind me so why should I suck out all of their resources. I'll find a way to make it work, but I'm hoping Cornell can give me just a little help. $66k is a lot of money 😱

I probably qualify for need-based.

But I will likely never know cause I won't get my FAFSA forms filled out because my dad is taking his sweet time with taxes 😡😡.

He owns a random stretch of land out in Illinois that's giving him problems I guess. Probably not even bringing in any $$ either. If only that land were in Texas!! 😛

Yeah, actually, I'm right there with you. My parents' net income this year has been $0. But they own some assets that may or may not even be worth the trouble, and I have a little sister in school at one of the most expensive cities in the country!

I imagine that'd have to be one square of sidewalk with a mailbox or associated PO box.

Haha. Nice. Nice.

I don't know if i'll qualify for need based or not. I never have before, but this is a different ball game...

Crossing fingers and wishing that financial aid package would arrive!!

Same here. Luckily, my parents didn't shell out too much money when I was in college (thank you half-scholarship!) so I'm going to collect on that this time around

As much as I loved my undergrad, it was really dumb of me to turn down my scholarships to go there :smack:. I can't change it so it doesn't bother me so much, but my family and I were just really ignorant about financial aid & debt. No one really advised us & I was the first person ever to go to college so we had no clue what we were doing. i want to make sure I do it right this time. Thankfully, my parents have offered to take on my undergrad loans (even though I'm going to try my best to pay them back) but I still worry about it.

Well, things couldn't possibly be as simple as they should be, could they? 😳

I know! Luckily, Baylor's cheap. And I'm talking with my parents to see if I can take out some loans from THEM (not the whole thing, but maybe a bit), that way the family doesn't lose as much money to the interest from the banks. Then hopefully I can pay them back in time for them to re-use that money on my brothers going to college.

I don't know if it's gonna work... but it's something we're at least looking at.

Indeed! Where on earth did he get that random stretch of land???

We also have the same problems; apparently he inherited a random ranch down in south Texas from his dad, and it creates all kinds of weird tax problems. So rather than wait for all that tax stuff to get ironed out, I just decided to submit, since I'm pretty sure we've got too many money tied up in assets to get any help.

Yeah, I would just like to say how much I appreciate Baylor's cost (even as an OOSer!).

We got the random stretch from my great-grandparents, I think. It just kind of sits there. 😛 I say we sell our half to my aunt so we don't have to worry about it any more.

Yep. UGrad was a full-ride for me, and working here has provided the same for grad school.

My parents are more than willing to help this time as much as they can. They're going to pay for most of my living expenses so I don't have to take quite as much. 😍

That's really nice 🙂 I hereby vow that if I'm ever in the financial position where I can independently give my kids a full ride (and still be comfortable in my retirement, of course), I absolutely will. I can imagine that it would be a lot easier to excel in college and med school without having the stress of re-paying loans floating over your head.

(Of course, if they start flubbing it up, they get cut off until they get those grades up; I'm not going to just enable them to party 24/7 either).

I totally rocked (well, at least I know for sure that I passed) the Afro American Music Culture and History class.

Now I gotta pass the Modern English Lit, and then Chinese Lit in Translational, in a span of 2 hours 🙁

Definitely. The whole not-paying-a-dime for 2 bachelors degrees and a master's definitely made them more willing to help this time

For some reason, every class I've taken with the word "Africa" in it has brought down my GPA significantly. I think the continent doesn't like me.

I got pretty good grants to go to my undergrad, but I did have to take out a bit in loans. My sisters are kinda useless so my mom pays their college loans, while I have a job so I was going to be paying back my own. Instead, my mom took my loans (which are a bit more each month) and I took my sisters'. My sister is almost debt-free cause of me!
Luckily, thanks to my scholarship, I'll only have to take out 19,000ish a year for Vandy. As it turns out, my mom had been saving up some money for my med school tuition since I was 11 (which is kind of intense) and granted, it wouldn't have even covered a whole year's COA, but now she gets to keep it. She's decided that instead of just hoarding it, she'll spend some of it on a down-payment on a house for me near school, which is just lovely. However, between the mortgage (which is gonna be very high) and car payments (since I'll need to own a car for the first time in my life), I definitely won't have enough money with the loans I'm getting.
So, I'm hoping she'll be able to help me some more....🙁

Unfortunately she works in real estate so this is NOT a good time for us financially. However, for that same reason, she insists that I buy a house and have a real investment so I can sell it when I graduate and hopefully make a profit. Not exactly sure how it's going to work, since I feel a bit guilty asking her for so much help...

My dad's in real estate too. He develops subdivisions. Shockingly, we've come out of the economic slump. Last year (well, about Mar-this Feb) were pretty rough for us. In the last few weeks things have really turned around and they are selling faster than he can get them built!

God is good!

Some people need to contact David Chan in order to get an understanding as to why I am going to Hopkins. I have been told my roommate and his friend are speculating it was only because I was disadvantaged, and it is quite bothersome.

You're rooming with a gunner wannabe pre-med?🙁
