53k is the COA for UW :meanie: and UW already gave me a couple grand in Perkins-type institutional loans (that doesn't accumulate interest until after 5 years post-graduation) so I'm already under the 50k/year mark and have a good shot at paying off all my debt within 10 years!! 🙂

Funny how something like THAT makes me happy at this point.. i.e. the alternative is THAT bad.

She had a wireless router in her dorm suite registered under her and lots of friends and friends of friends used it, and apparently someone downloaded and shared a... Metallica song? I think that's what it was. And so she got in trouble because it was her router.

Another cool thing about UW is the Shapiro you can do after 1st year that pays you 5k for 10 weeks work! 🙂

A lot of labs guarantee pubs too!

Nice! How competitive is the Shapiro grant? I'd definitely take advantage of it... I mean, I plan to do some research no matter where I went, and UW doesn't lack in that department at all.. in some ways this is a very easy decision for me to make!

random topic change:

I love pens (stylophile!). I have like 200 pens and I just keep buying more. I feel like I learn better when I am happy with my equipment (you guys may have seen my bookbag thread...) so I bought a new pen today. It is a zebra F-701 and it is one of the "best writing" pens I have ever used.

It was $7 at Staples. Of course, the pen uses the same F-refills that most of the zebra ballpoints use. The F-301, F-301 Ultra, F-402, etc. all write just as well, but this baby is completely stainless steel (heavy and balanced). I often test out pens by doing some pen-spinning tricks; if the pen isn't balanced, I don't use it at all (psychological thing). This pen, however, is the bomb 👍
 
I would like to chime in the discussion about complaining about finaid.

Apparently one of my schools doesn't feel the need to respond to multiple e-mails and calls regarding residency in one of the larger states in the union. 😡😡😡😡😡

Seriously, I'm about to drop some serious $$ on buying a house I don't want, and not even an "I'm out of the office" reply?

WTF?

FTR, I've been trying for the last month and a half at least, if not longer. I tried to contact this person once back in October, too. And last Wednesday. And I called her today.

Historically anyone who writes a legitimate proposal will get the grant. There are some AMAZING faculty at UW. One of my classmates is doing research at the Thompson lab, where human embryonic stem cells were first isolated... The lab I'm working at helped GE develop magnetic resonance...

She came home from a parent teacher night and called to tell me this had happened back in...dang I dunno January.

This is the first time I've heard it elsewhere. I feel so gullible now...

The feeling of a good pen or mechanical pencil is wonderful. You ever tried a fountain pen? I always wondered what those were like..

I've met some kids and you just ask yourself "what happened there? Was there mother still a bit high from the birthing drugs or what?"
