CLASS OF 2014...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Basically I dug myself a hole in Anatomy again and have to bail myself out on Friday. Then, Spring Break!

Other than that, it's the status quo. I'll sure be glad when I don't have to worry about the five locations that the lateral collateral ligament attaches.

For serious. I am really, really, really sick of anatomy. I actually feel like I could puke every time we go to lab (which, with the exam tomorrow, is about 8 times a week). Everything else this semester is either decent or really great. Just sooooo sick of dissecting moldy cadavers every day.

I echo this sentiment. Anatomy this semester is sooooo much worse than last semester, especially with a teacher that swears "it's always in that location.....unless it's not....." :bang: And the number of things we frantically write down, just be told not to worry about that, and then have it show up on the test anyway is absolutely ridiculous.

Ugghhhhhhh. Until the end of the semester (aside from spring break), we have two tests EVERY SINGLE FREAKING WEEK. Can you say complete loss of sanity in a two month period? I can!!

Summer please come!! Now!!

Lol, the best line though was "HEY! WHAT IS THE PASSWORD?!"

I just really want this test to be over with so I can start spring break. (And it's so nice of them to put 2 tests, a quiz, and a hw assignment due the week after.)

I think our wonderful computer tech classmate is going to kill someone soon over that. It was really funny though. ><

So people said this quarter sucked. I really didn't get it until this week (finals week). Now I get it. There's still one more exam to go.

Maybe this one will include the lube. :lame:

Yeah, 8 finals in 6 days is no fun

6 more weeks of classes left! Now I really understand why everyone here says 2nd semester 1st year is the worst. I especially love learning large animal anatomy from a small animal anatomist. Our last test was brutal and it was on the Friday of spring break. They most definitely did not provide any lube... Needless to say, I just went straight home and started drinking.

Soo I guess Texas is almost out of school now right?? so jealous!

we are just finishing midterms on monday and then finals start up for the next month. I'm sooo out of motivation to study 😛 I just want to do anything that doesn't use my brain, like maybe bask in the sun and listen to music lol

how is everyone else's last semester/quarter??? omgg we're almost going to be 2nd yrs!!! lol AMAZING!!

Spring quarter > winter quarter by far

We have so much more free time this quarter! Like today, we actually don't have any classes! (except for an elective that I am currently watching in my pajamas on webcast)

Our finals are the second week of June. 😀

What's everyone doing this summer??

This semester has sucked for me (and most of my class). Our test schedule has been pretty grueling. We have something like 12 tests and 2 or 3 quizzes these last 3 weeks of class. We are done with one week of it! Today's gen path exam was pretty nice. For some reason, the path professors are generally happy people. They make it fun to learn. We have technically started our finals. We have 2 next week ("dead week") and 5 the week after that. Then FREEEEDDDDDOOOM! This summer, I am doing the Banfield student job program. I don't really know what to expect but I hope I will learn a lot. I also plan on spending as much time as I can at the lake drinking margs and pina coladas!

I'm going to costa rica (VIDA) and Galapagos 😀

My summer job is still TBD 🙁 But recently I've realized I have SO much that I need to do that may require taking days off work so if I only have 2 months free to work, taking more than a couple days off work is ridiculous. So I may just end up volunteering in the lab I want to work at so I can accommodate my other errands.

anyone else doing vet trips? I have a couple friends who are going to do RAVS and some who are going on a Thailand trip. Gotta take advantage of our second to last "free summer" lol

One week of classes left, then 5 finals for us here at TN! I'm still undecided about what I'm doing for the summer--trying to find a job, maybe at the library on campus. Honestly, I'm so glad that first year is almost over. I know some people have said it's flown by, but to me, last August feels like it was years ago.

Same here. I've applied for a bunch of jobs, but no wants to hire someone who needs about ~4-5 weeks of vacation during a three month period. I'm going up to S.D with RAVS for 2 weeks, so that's my vet trip for the summer. Have to get home for my cousin's wedding, which will also involve a few days at the ocean, and would like to see my bro at some point. Haven't spent time with him in over 18months, with the exception of 2 hours at my Grandma's funeral. And yeah. there is lots of margarita drinking at LissaRae's lake in my future, and hopefully some camping trips and mini road trips as well.

I've got a part time gig teching in the ICU so its looking like that's going to be it for me. I'm sad I can't get more clinic time in, but I'll probably end up volunteering at the shelter and/or training a few horses. My father offered to help with bills (since I had a mental breakdown on the phone with him the other night...oops) which definitely lowers my stress level right now. I did NOT budget my loan money to last through the summer, after May, I've got just about nothing left in the checking account. One less thng to worry about at least.

I had the wonderful pleasure of reminding my husband that we only have three years left! (He's been grumbling "four more years" all year.....) It feels so good to almost be out for the summer.

I feel silly for it, but I'll be working full time at a kennel facility this summer. Not much for boosting the clinical experience, but it will be nice to get paid for a full amount of work again. At least I get to be the resident "is this normal?" go to person. Also, can't wait for trips to St. Louis(rep training) and Washington, DC(fun with the hubs). It feels like forever since the last time I took an honest vacation.

We are done Friday 😀 I got my schedule for next semester and I think I might die just by looking at it

Ahhh!! We're almost done!! I'm so excited! This last quarter has been awesome. It's a ton of work but totally doable. I'm spanking my classes thus far and hoping to finish the year strong. We've got physio on Monday (renal, acid base balance, and respiration) then radiology the week after. Then into finals!

I was offered a banfield job but I've decided to go back into the lab studying canine genetic disorders. I'm just looking forward to relaxing and spending time with my fiancé and puppy.

But yeah, I'm loving vet school. Although my hand hurts from writing and typing so much.

👍 I'm not sure i can keep the grades I have though lol stupid nutrition totally ruined my studying for physio!!! we'll see if i can pull it off after studying this weekend haha

but yes, i LOVE this semester so much more than last semester. every time we have a class i learn something interesting and i get so excited lol and i'm actually LEARNINGG!!!

Classes are over as of last Thursday! We have 4 more finals and then I'm officially a 2nd year!!!
I'm thrilled to say I've survived thus far and congrats to all 🙂
:luck:

This is the worst 4 weeks of school. Motivation is completely gone from everyone, and to top it off it's the most intense part of anatomy. Why does the head have to be so complicated!!!!

The head sucks. Glad I got through it earlier in the semester, except now our final is on the pelvic limb and the anatomies of birds, pocket pets, and cumulative first-year anatomy.

I've never taken a repro class, so I'm a bit worried about repro physio and the parasit final is a dark horse. We shall see...

i wish we still had anatomy!! class all day without lab sucks, too many lectures! You will miss anatomy once it is over!
This week will be a nice break though because we go to new bolton center all thursday for large animal intro to clinical vet med!! i miss the large animals 😀

this! haha i HATE anatomy. we have two more anatomy labs and then we are done FOR GOOD. and today i found out i passed histology so i'm done with that for good, too!😀

i think i'm pretty over vet school right now...i can't wait to get back into the real world and start making money, working in a clinic again, etc. but first, i have a pharmacology final on friday, then 5 finals next week...then FREEDOM.

Parasit lab final today and anatomy lab final on Thursday. Normally, I would say I can't wait for this week to be over, but next week we have 5 finals so I am going to say I can't wait for Thursday to be over but the weekend can drag out as long as it wants!

We finished up with our finals before Easter, so now we're all relaxing and enjoying our two weeks of selectives before summer. No exams included! I 'm taking a week of avian pathology and a week of skin toxicology. Plus I'm counting down the days until next Friday - camping in the Ozarks with the boy for a week!!!

25% of the way to veterinarian!!!

I am so looking forward to finishing anatomy! I cannot STAND anatomy!! The professors are great--one in particular is fantastic and I feel really guilty about hating her class but...

This semester of anatomy is a lot worse than last--lots of muscle, nerves, and vessels.

One thing I really like about VMRCVM is that they schedule exams every other day whenever possible. So we get some down time before the next final.

 so much hatred! i just can't stand sitting in class so long. Another reason why i stopped going to class lol but now i just sit on my butt all day at home with the windows open. its amazing ive actually lost weight this year considering how stationary i have become

If any 2nd-years around here know how to motivate oneself to study Parasit, I would appreciate absorbing this knowledge. Right now, I'm counting on a solid mid-term and quiz grades to buffer the utter disappointment that my final exam grade will be.

Gross Anatomy is over--FOREVER.
(Although it was kinda my favorite class..I'm glad its OVER!)👍😍:luck:😀🙂

I hope that all of you in the South are staying safe during these storms! I know a lot of cars and houses that have been damaged due to hail and wind. I can't focus on studying for exams when I'm holed up in the bathroom!

We JUST had spring break last week (stupidest idea ever).... I could not care less about school right now...

I am rejoicing with you... ours ended a couple weeks ago but we just got our final grades in.... so glad to close that chapter..

Possible tornado at school - lots of vehicle damage so far. Stay safe!

Currently I am procrastinating at studying for the two tests I have tomorrow morning - one on Monogastric Phys and one Gross. I hate that our semester runs so much later than everyone else's because it makes my motivation dip.

At least I only have two more tests and three finals. All of the finals are going to kick my butt. And it'll be a miracle if I learn Immuno in time.

And I'd like to just add that after finals I get to spend Saturday driving 17 hours home to PA and then Sunday driving 10 hours down to TN and 10 hours back up. 37 hours of driving in 60 hours.

It almost makes me look forward to second year!

When are yall done?

Haven't gotten to finals yet, but we had our visit out to the New Bolton Center for Large Animal Physical Exam Laboratory yesterday.

It was a pretty amazing (and tiring day). Lots of hands on work for us and a welcome change from classes all day (even for those who rarely attend😛).

My day went like this.
1) Started at the swine facility...Attempted a PE on a sow. Got a temp and that is about it. Visited the farrowing room and saw piglets born one day ago up to about 2 weeks old. They were pretty cute. Then we practiced carry 4 week old piglets and saw my first pig pile. Hilarious.

2) Opthalmology: examined 3 horses and 2 goats. 1 of the goats took a run at me while I was engrossed in my exam, but I was too quick for the little bugger!

3) Physical Exam... Did PE on 3 different horses. Heard some nice murmurs.

Lunch during a thunderstorm which was a very well behaved storm to not interrupt our activities and held off until midday.

4) Reproduction... Walked mares up to stallions to see if they were in estrus. Pretty interesting. Afterwards we all palpated the testicles of a stallion. <= Insert inappropriate joke here.

5) Restraint/Venipuncture.... Did a jugular and facial venipuncture. My first ever (whoo hoo). Both were successful The facial is unbelievable, you basically just stab the horse in the face, and no they don't like it too much. We also did neck twitches to help calm the horse. Lots of sugar cubes involved here.

6) Respiratory... ausculatations of upper/lower airways and used a rebreathing bag (not much to hear to be honest). More fun in collaborating on an endoscopic exam. I got to "drive" the endoscope. Pretty cool.

7) Forelimb exam... This was the end of the day, we were all exhausted and the horses (understandably) even more so. Teaching horses or not, how would you feel if you had to deal with 1st years so long. We basically just did a P/E on the forelimb while avoiding getting stomped on. Best part was when 2 students had to be stopped from trying to lift the horses legs at the same time:laugh:.

Next week we go to the cow facility for a little more work. It was nice to do this after we actually have learned something to make it meaningful. I think a few more people may be thinking of large animal now. Pathetically, there were still just a few people who were reluctant to be near the horses. 🙁

Almost unanimously this was a highlight of first year for us. A nice way to give our brains a re-boot before beginning the grind of finals.

SOV-great summary!! i LOVED yesterday!!! and i can't wait for next week with the cows 🙂 it will be good to see them again haha

My first blood draw was yesterday too 🙂 And I thought it was SOOO amazing going inside the guttural pouches for the endoscopy station!!! I just can't believe everything that we did yesterday!

Glad the year is wrapping up so well for you guys! I do have to say though, for anybody complaining that their semester goes longer than everybody else's-if someone from OSU had posted on here you wouldn't feel so bad. Those of us here, undergrad and vet students alike, still have 5 more weeks of classes and a week of finals. Take that!

But you start like a month later than everyone else too. So... no pity here!

This is true. Although the summer after first year is going to SUCK. We're not going to get out until the middle of June, as usual, because we'll be on quarters for first year, but then since second year is starting semesters we'll start on August 22. So my second to last summer vacation EVER will be cut short by an entire month 🙁

You don't get a summer between your second and third year?

Us too. And we started like 3 weeks before OSU in Fall. 😛
