what is everyone up to today?

third and final interview for waitressing at some fancy restaurant. i hope to God this means they are hiring me because i need a job stat! triple stat!

i didnt say anything to them about starting school in the fall . . . but when i was on my second interview, the person was talking about scheduling and mentioned that lots of people go to school too, so i figure at some point i can confess that i 'might think about possibly doing some sort of school in fall, but don't worry, i'll keep working!'

do people generally know that med students dont work? if i tell them i am starting med school but plan to keep working will they know i am full of it?

sounds mean but don't tell them ANYTHING. I had the worst time trying to find jobs when I was honest about my time commitments.

oh and good luck!!! when I worked as a waitress I made BANK! Good throw-away job to have.

I don't know what I'd do. That would be the worst.
I am so happy that every school I've been to has been very respectful of my request for a vegetarian lunch...even when I am the only one...of like 30 people that wants one 😛

at Rush they didn't ask, so they randomly set the tables with both veg and non veg lunches. all the veg ones got eaten and in fact they had to request an extra one, and there were several chicken ones that went uneaten. (i knew i fit in here!) i asked the student tour guide about it and he said he thought that the percent of med students who are vegetarian is really high, like 27 or 30 percent. i can't remember now but it was a lot.

in any case, the lunch was incredibly delicious and made me happy 👍

I was raised vegan....20+ years and counting. My parents are hippies.

Haha at Emory they let me go first to get my lunch since a lot of people actually like the veg lunches cause they are delicious.
at Duke.....I had a fancy schmancy sandwich too. Mmmmmmm

Hoody-that is amazing!

also, this is a terrible reason to have a bad feeling about a school, but i totally can't shake the whole MCW lunch experience i had (my foil-wrapped lunch, labeled veggie burger, was in fact a real burger and i didn't notice until i started chewing it!) and since i was sitting with a bunch of other interviewees i couldnt spit it out, i just had to swallow it.
ouch. tough to swallow (pun intended). not sure I could shake that one either. :scared:

Thanks. It really doesn't take that much extra effort on my part. And I guess that I wouldn't technically be considered vegan anymore considering that I now eat cheese, ice cream, and baked goods (like cake) that are obviously made with milk. I still do not drink and "free" milk (yay for cheerios and juice!). Generally no eggs (unless in cake 😀...but will use imitation egg if making it myself), no meat, no fish....

My biggest pet peeve is when a diner labels something vegetarian and then sends it out packed with egg (think vegetable fried rice or breakfast stuff). 👎

i wouldn't volunteer any info on purpose, i am just afraid im gonna slip up and i hate lying. if you have waitressed you know how social it is . . . i cannot go drinking with my coworkers or i will tell them for sure!! also i will have to lie about my other job (MCAT tutoring) did I mention I hate lying? oh well if i am lucky i can just fly under the radar and no one will pay much attention to me! but you are definitely right about the money. i knew for sure that the most lucrative job i can get with an MS in anatomy is . . . serving 😀

wow you interviewed at Emory and Duke??? go you. i submitted a primary to emory but couldn't pull the trigger on the secondary . . . i knew it would hurt too much to spend the $100 just to get rejected from there.

how long are they gonna make you wait until they decide??

i thought the generally accepted meaning of 'vegetarian' means ovo-lacto? i eat eggs. and vegan is no egg or dairy? i know there are more specific labels and definitons than that but as far as restaurants are concerned i think this is how they should and usually do define it.

but not always . . . what i hate is that a lot of asian restaurants label stuff vegetarian that has fish or fish paste or shrimp in it . . . and a lot of mexican food is made with chicken stock, even like plain rice. its kind of a pain in the ass. thats why i couldnt go vegan, its hard enough to keep meat out of my food, trying to keep eggs and milk out seems nightmarishly impossible.

You are correct....there are several terms that define us vege heads. Colorado is a decent place to live for organic/vegi restraunts (yeah, I cant spell this and apparently Im not even close cause my spell check cant figure it out either). Cali is probably the best place to live....and I'm guessing places like Wisco are the worst.

I don't think vegan-ism is very plausible for me because I run every day and am unable to force myself to eat much more than I already do lol. I have never felt better and ..sprite-lier than I going veg has made me feel.
Kudos to you though, my best friend went vegan for a while but it was causing some health issues for her (Vit B deficiency 🙁 ) our nutritionist advised her to go veg until she could work out a better eating regimen.

Yea lying sucks. I think if you are friendly with your co-workers...letting them know eventually would be fine. I'd only be worried about the obligatory b!tch of the place turning me in lol.
Emory is supposed to hopefully let the December interviewees know before Feb...unless they don't accept you-then you are stuck waiting and praying for another month :\
duke makes us wait til the end of march i think
that.
I think this might be a test they do...to see how many of us can stay sane. I interviewed in September...stupid stupid girl!

Tata, observing anything cool today? I got to intubate on Tuesday with the internists who had to update their proficiencies....it was wicked cool 😀. First try baby, first try. 😎

Texas. To quote my cousin when he was asked what type of salad he wanted w/ his meal at a steakhouse: "I'll eat my vegetables vicariously through my meat."

I just figured you would want to hold out for MSTP . . . i mean i don't really know how the acceptance works, if you got into MCW for MD already, is it still pending for PhD too or not? if you got into MSTP at another school you liked less, would you go there?? how long does it take them to decide, anyway? because IIRC you had many interviews (and an MCAT score that made me want to throw up blood. in a good way.)

don't get me wrong, though, i thought MCW was really nice. i just think the Rush vibe fit me . . . more than i expected any school to! i really feel like i am gonna fit in there among other things, they really like nontraditional students, so i think there will be a good age range among my classmates. i'll be 27 when i start!

also, this is a terrible reason to have a bad feeling about a school, but i totally can't shake the whole MCW lunch experience i had (my foil-wrapped lunch, labeled veggie burger, was in fact a real burger and i didn't notice until i started chewing it!) and since i was sitting with a bunch of other interviewees i couldnt spit it out, i just had to swallow it.
eeeeeeeeeew sorry about the burger.

yes, i'm still in the running for mstp at MCW. they just do the med-only acceptances first, and if you get in, you get forwarded to the md/phd committee, which takes longer than a week unlike the md folks. but yes, i would pick an mstp over an md-only. but most of the mstp's i applied to do a majority of their acceptances after allll the interviews are done (or so they tell me). i'm just sitting here crossing all my fingers and trying not to worry too much

I don't know what I'd do. That would be the worst.

same here! except when one school only had a salad as a veg option, and i'm the worst veg because i don't like lettuce. ... i know, i know...

The only major downfall of being raised this way is that I do not know how to prepare and/or cook any meat. This makes dinner parties and stuff a little bit difficult. My bf cooks his meat....but since we've been together he has cut out all meat expect chicken (and we're working on that 🙂).

So much for those 6 years of home ec. Cheesy toast anyone? or how about some chex mix.

I am shadowing in clinic today...I usually don't know what I am walking into...usually lots of cool stuff though. I am praying for a post surgery first follow up patient 😀

Morocco. Very meat centered food culture. My friend (the ex vegan one lol) is there and I am rather worried for her.

OK--so I'm doing a physical for HPSP Friday, and I'm right at the weight limit (damn you college athletics), so I may or may not be eating for the next few days...I need to stop watching Paula Deen on the Food Network....

We have lots of options. Actually at the dining hall the Veg station is by far the best. They used to have these "spicy sweet potato sandwiches" I would get like 10. DELICIOUS!

I've changed the channel to Ghost Hunters International -- only a few more hours until Wife Swap...my job vamps back up on Monday 🙄

pasta, rice, corn and potatoes are about all I crave. +1 for carbs. 👍
I crave cheese....melted cheese. heaven!
Both my PI and the doctor I shadow were like "You are Russian! How can you be vegetarian?!"
to which I replied with "I am American now! I can do whatever I want!" lol

Anything exciting been happening this morning? I've been busy busy at work today (which I love!)!

I am kinda Russian, but I tried being vegetarian for a week and my cultural heritage wanted nothing of that.

I love your avatar. I adopted a manatee once.....with my third grade class. 🙂

uugh so i just realized i put the wrong date for one of my many previous addresses on the certiphi thing. i reaaly hope that doesn't mess things up.

So, if you have to reapply to medical school, do you get a new AAMC ID#? I'm just curious.

i was vegetarian for a couple years in middle school, then i kinda fell out of it. i can be perfectly happy eating veg for a while though, especially with all the yummy fake chicken stuff my mom gets (she's vegetarian). and i loveee eggplant, i'd take eggplant parm over chicken parm any day!

i worked out today with my trainer i see once a month and she kicked my but so hard i almost puked haha. but i didn't so that was a definite plus🙂

nahh im pretty sure i made up dates for previous addresses, it never affects it

the cbc really takes like 1 second to conduct for them

No. And reapplying is not that bad if you have enough booze.

hmm i'm almost positive i had the same one last year

Good. I figured it would get kinda confusing if you had multiple numbers.

Jackson, I didn't realize you were a reapplicant! I figure it's a possibility that I'll have to reapply next year. I've been assessing weaknesses of or stupid mistakes within my application the past few months.

hahaha luckily i didn't go full force with it last time or i think it would have been more of a pain to reapply. actually i don't even know if my pitiful attempt is enough to make me a reapplicant-i submitted amcas to one school before getting my mcat score back, then after i saw it and realized it needed some major improvement i halted my attempt til this app cycle.

haha ya kind of, see my last post🙂 you won't have to reapply though, i would be willing to bet on it!!

hahah my non-veg friends always try to steal my fake chicken nuggets.
I also have a weird thing about craving taste of hot dogs every once in a while...the meatless ones are AWESOME! (don't got for the sausage though-yuck!)
