probably ~7.5 hours. i love driving down at night since i don't hit much traffic-otherwise it takes much longer since i have to go through nyc, jersey, baltimore, and dc. i'm super excited, i haven't seen everyone since new years! memphis seems like a cool place, i've never been there. are you doing anything fun or just the conference?

Wow, that's gonna be a long drive! I love roadtrips though. Driving is such good thinking time. That's cool that you get to see your friends! It's kinda weird to me to know that pretty soon, whether I move off to medical school (hopefully) or they move away for jobs/graduate school, that I won't get to see many of my friends for a very very long time.

As far as Memphis goes, I'll probably just do the conference. I'm getting there really late on Friday night, just in time for me to present Saturday morning. And although I don't leave until Sunday afternoon, I'll probably just go to the airport early and hang out there lol.

awww don't do that! hit up beale st. and grab a big ass beer while listening to some live music -- or if you're just going to head to the airport, hit up Corky's bbq (or if that's not in your terminal, there's another brand of bbq that's also pretty good in the other terminal. but they're all connected, so it's totally feasible to walk to Corky's). It's AWESOME.

<--grandma lived in Arkansas about 1 hr from Memphis. The airport is pretty boring overall, but the food is good 🙂

hey all! I'm also doing the "get in better shape" dealio, lol

Mmmmm... Barbeque... I 😍 barbeque! That sounds so good.

Neato. What's your workout regimen?

Just found this... I thought you all might find it interesting...

Will taking acetominophen (Tylenol) help me to race faster?

It may. Researchers at the University of Bedfordshire in the UK show that trained cyclists rode faster when they took acetominophen (10 miles in 26 minutes 15 seconds, compared to 26:45 with placebos). The acetominophen takers worked harder because they had higher power outputs and blood lactate levels and faster heart rates. There was no reported difference in perceived exertion or pain, but the only plausible explanation for the improvement is that exercise is regulated by pain perception, and increased pain tolerance can improve performance (Journal of Applied Physiology, January 2010).

anyone had experience with Vibram fivefingers shoes?
I'm intrigued
http://www.vibramfivefingers.com

I haven't tried them myself, but I am super curious about the idea. I feel like I've been seeing more and more people with them lately. I heard a radio segment about how they restore your natural running gait and are better for you than regular shoes.

Anyone else?

haha well have fun at your conference and the airport🙂

it is really weird to be so far from the friends i spent practically all my time with for 4 years. i guess that's wht happens when you grow up!

mornin everyone! Thanks for all the birthday wishes 🙂

Should be a good day!

Neato. What's your workout regimen?
Mine's very barebones, but that's been my workout mantra for the past 3 months and I've been seeing pretty good results.

For two months Jan.-Feb. I did more bulking:
-Lift 4 times/wk., no cardio
-Eat a ton, but eat clean (lots of chicken, complex carbs, etc.)

Took a two week break, then started cutting the fat:
-MWF: Lift 45mins with supersetting, then bike 8 miles
-TR: Run 2.5 miles
-eat same stuff, just a lot less, chicken + complex carbs

We talked about these shoes in one of my exercise science classes. They reportedly require a build-up of use routine that they suggest with the shoes. Apparently, they're really tough on your calves at first, but with continued use a lot of common running injuries are usually corrected (plantar fasciitis, ITBS, etc).

I have a pair of these shoes. I haven't gotten too much use out of them yet. They're hard to get used to. They're comfortable and all, but it's just a very different feeling to walk/exercise in them.

Nice. This is definitely a bulk up type workout. Mine is much more focused on toning, so my workout is filled with cardio throughout the week with different types of cardio for different days.

I remember a kid in my biochem and physics class wore them...seems like there is very little to protect your foot from stuff like rocks..they are kind of rubbery looking. I like feeling snug in my shoe, I think I'd miss that if I tried these. Besides...the toe thing seems ridiculous

edit: I should mention that I have very..."loose" ankle joints that need support of a full size shoe.

The first part is bulk-up. The last part is toning. If you don't have any resistance while you do cardio, you lose more muscle in addition to fat. P90x takes care of that by having resistance exercises involved, making sure you don't lose muscle and instead, tone. Woo for workouts! I'm such a nerd; I actually researched cortisol levels and determined that if you're a morning workouter, you should definitely eat something before you run, even if you're trying to lose weight.

And by researched, of course, I mean "Googled."

As for those shoes, concept sounds good, but then my knees spoke up and asked, "Are you ****ing kidding me?" To which my ankles chimed in, "Dude better be..."

Looks like ZERO padding/stability.

Yeah, I usually eat within an hour before working out anyway. So tell me what your opinion is on this (I've heard arguments for both): if you are trying to lose weight or tone, is it better to do cardio before or after the strength/resistance training part of the workout?

I have a personal theory based on what I know, but I don't know if there is any literature on this. I lift/resistance first because that uses up glycogen stores, so when you get to cardio your body is forced to go to the fat stores quicker. If you do cardio before strength training then you're using up glycogen stores and your strength routine will suffer.

Well, they have a thick rubber sole. And the sole is molded to provide arch support for your foot. But otherwise, no padding at all. However, this is what they argue is so bad for you anyway. I'm not sure if they have any research or anything to support this claim though.

Anyone seen the new Tiger Woods commercial by Nike? VERY provocative. Made me feel something, but I don't know what...

Almost verbatim, this. Even without the sciencyness (which I love), boils down to your lifting suffering if you do it post-cardio.

Well then I'll put it this way, I've sprained my ankle barefoot on a flat surface before (I have terrible ankles). I NEED support. Oh god, now I'm beginning to sound like the vagina monologues...

hahaha. do some calf raises! throw them in at the end of a strength session 3x a week for a while and your ankles will improve a ton.

Thanks for the opinion guys! This all definitely makes sense.

Well, I suppose that's understandable... 🙂

That reminds me of how my knees used to be. They used to hurt terribly when running or doing other cardio exercises, but after doing a lot of strength training in legs, I hardly ever have knee problems anymore.

Believe me, I've tried everything. Doctors said, my ankles will do but if I ever want the stability back I need surgery to replace my ligaments.

I was half a ligament tear away from requiring surgery. According to them, there are three major ligaments on the outside of the ankle that account for sprains. If you tear all three completely through, you need surgery. I tore 2 all the way and 1 half way... and the tendon that runs up the outside of my leg... and got a bone bruise.

All because Josh Roddy went over the back on a rebound. I got the rebound though. 🙄

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Ankle injuries are a b!tch to recover from anyway. I had a moderate sprain because some clown lost his footing when setting a screen and it made me step on his foot. It had been 6 years since I rolled ankle until that happened and it took a solid 5 months until I got all of my jumping ability back.

Ouch!!! Do you have to wear any type of ankle brace when you workout?

Oooo that sucks. Josh Roddy went over the back on me and the side of my foot came down on his and the inside of my foot touched the inside of my leg. Picture that one for a minute

I wear two. Because my other ankle has now become a pain in the butt, too. Plus, if I sprain both somehow, then I can't wait. On the plus side, I get to go to the front of the lines with friends at Six Flags. It's become a tradition. Summer comes. BB sprains ankle. We go to Six Flags.

for me...that wouldn't work...the joints themselves have too much range...if that makes sense.

stoney...I never heard "support" in shoes as a bad thing-I have heard that flip flops, which were once called the devil shoe cause they have no support, actually are pretty good for you but that doesn't make support a bad thing.

oh my god. i can only imagine the obscenities leaving your mouth. can you not get the surgery unless all three are torn? if it was me i think i'd go ahead and get that if i could afford it.

so i just realized that met and i are both gonna be in richmond tonight...yup, i'm a bit slow😛 i'm staying with my friend who goes to pt school at vcu, then we're driving up to charlottesville tomorrow afternoon to meet the rest of out friends. yay for being in close proximity to another sdn'er!🙂

support can be a bad thing because it can weaken joints. in your circumstance it sounds like you need the support though.

back to the vibram five fingers... they are also a better option for runners because they send less shock through the joints because they are thinner than normal running shoes. the thick cushy running shoes send a terrible amount of shock through the joints and add a lot to the already intense impact of running.

Making lemonade out of lemons! 👍

Well, they do have support. That's not what I was saying. They just don't have a bunch of padding.

I can, I just wasn't required to, which at the time, I was like "Surgery? Naww..."

Funny thing was, I went to the ER and they basically said, "here are some crutches, nothing's broken (which it wasn't). Go get an MRI sometime" And being the responsible junior in high school, I never got the MRI and decided I'd crutch it for a week. So after a week of crutches, I tried hobbling around on a half ligament (which I was unaware of) for 2 weeks and then you can guess what happened. Sprained my ankle again and foot turned blue... again, so then I actually got the MRI and ortho was like "WTF. YOU DID WHAT?!?!??!"

Yeah... oops. lol

Anthropology (which is harder than physiology due to the nature of quizzes) quiz in 1 hour

Physiology Exam in 3 hours.

FML.

Alright, time to put my money where my mouth is-- it's running time! I'll be back later. Cya!

ahh to be young and in college and able to go for a run at 12:15 on a weekday...:wistful:

I miss that so much. I also miss being able to make appointments throughout the day and in between classes. It's so hard to figure out when to go to the dentist without missing work !

are you sure about this? because I saw I had 2018 (2019 after this one, i guess) posts and if you search my posts and count back, there's 18 listed ones before my 2000th post. presumably if they weren't deleted they would either show up or there would be a discrepancy between the post count and the posts that show up on search

then again, this is probably far too much thought far too late at night for something that means absolutely nothing

Looks like you are right. New updates to our system must have changed that.

Anybody start studying for med school yet

yea, saw the debut yesterday. i think it's bold. and a slap in the face to all the companies that dropped him. you know Nike is going to the bank with this one.

it's one thing to just stick with him...

it's another thing to try and profit from the situation.

good play, Nike.

i went to the USNews education site to look and they have a countdown for the new grad school rankings...i wonder if SDN will blow up when that happens.
