Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How does everybody already have exams? We just have them all at once - at the end of Sept, beginning of Nov, and end of December. That's it.

We have the first exams after 2 weeks, and 3 total for this module, which lasts 8 weeks -_-

midterm and a final for anatomy, histology (both w/ practicals)

midterm + final for biochem and genetics

midterm/final (online) for embryo (highest graded exam counts only)

final take home essay for class on public health/epi/biostats/behavioral sci

peer review/faculty review/and physical exam/patient assessment for clinical medicine course

faculty and peer assessment for group case based class

those are my only grades for this semester

I'm going to start double gloving once I get some bigger gloves. The free ones that I got are a little too small. The smell doesn't leak through mine too much, but just enough to where I will notice it eventually.

Free disposable scalpels ftw

Man, everybody is sweating the Welch-Allyn representatives. Watch everybody buy everything. I thought I might for a second, but now I really don't think so.

I think I'll buy a reflex hammer, penlight and blood pressure cuff. I'm still deciding whether to get the Welch-Allyn Elite or the Littmann Master Cardiology.

If I really need an ophtho/oto I can buy a pocket diagnostic set on Ebay for $200 instead of $450.

I heard the littman stethoscopes are the best.

Either way, I need to figure it out by tomorrow afternoon. Or not, but preferably tomorrow afternoon.

The Master Cardiology looks cooler, if that matters. Price is the same pretty much, but the MC doesn't have 2 sides and is different. I've read through all the all stethoscope threads and still can't make up my mind.

having 2 sides is pretty nice, i like how the smaller side fits right above the clavicle for listening to upper lungs.

We got Littmann Cardiology III's at White Coat as gifts from the alumni society.

that's pretty baller, i wish we got free stuff stethoscopes!

So everybody else gets stethoscopes and white coats, while we don't get ****, get flagged for using the internet for non-school purposes in class. and lack streamed lectures? My school sucks.

That SUCKS. And that was one of the things I was worried about because living on the campus you have to abide by the same rules, which means no FB, Pandora, etc in your own dorm room!

Thus my dilemma. 😎

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I don't even live in the dorms and I think it's ridiculous. If you use the internet to do anything else you basically have to buy Cox internet. I don't know why the hospital and the school can't just run separate networks. If we can do stupid crap on the internet at LSU with 30,000 students, I'm sure the LSUHSC has the ability to let us do stuff, too.

Facebook is blocked and we are monitored for how much bandwidth we use each month. If we're in the top 10 or 20 users (I forget which one) like twice, we have to meet with the Dean of Student Affairs and they look at our history, etc... This applies to people that live in the dorms too, btw.

I don't understand why they can't just get a separate network for the nursing, allied health, and medical schools. The hospital should have its own network.

I smell like preserved cadaver. First day of anatomy was fun though.

Get used to it. The worse part is when you are at home eating after dissecting and all of a sudden smell something that smells like formaldehyde...

I don't see what they think it's going to hurt. All the students here use the hospital network for their FB type activities.

🙁

Maybe you did better than you thought. :xf:

That's what everybody says about Step I.

Thanks... I hope I did better than I think I did. It's unlikely though. 🙁

That was pretty damn brutal 😡 So much **** not covered in the text, like wtf?

Well, the way I figure it is that we can miss 30 questions and still have a 77 on the test as a whole. So that makes me feel a little better...

😱 Metallica, that's crazy!!

It helps me not use the internet except to check my mail or do something actually useful/important during class, so I guess I don't really care all that much.

I wish the books I ordered yesterday would come in so that I could study more efficiently. Or at all.

Oh yeah, that's definitely the worst part. Even though you've washed your hands ten times or more, you can still smell formaldehyde as you raise that sandwich to your mouth to take a bite. Ick.

Some chick shoved a wiffle ball in her vag and left it for two months and it fused to her mucosa, another guy chopped off his arm with an axe... Need more?

wow that's crazy!!! actually sounds pretty interesting though, i can't wait til 3rd year🙂

My tortoise died. 🙁

sorry met🙁

Copernicus! Awesome choice of name. Reminds me of Doc Brown's first name for his dog (before Einstein was around).

Am I the only one who's first (and only science class at med school) is biochem/genetics and all of the bio kids have a HUGE 1-up on the non-sci majors...? Kinda shaking in my boots the night before my test. I keep telling myself not to judge my percentile rank on the test, but it's hard to feel like I'll be really disappointed if I'm in the bottom half. 🙁

my first class is biochem too...we don't even start anatomy til Nov. I definitely feel like the bio/biochem kids have a big advantage. i remember people saying that what you learn in undergrad doesn't make a difference, but i really don't think that's true.

How does everybody already have exams? We just have them all at once - at the end of Sept, beginning of Nov, and end of December. That's it.

we have an exam about every 2 weeks. it sucks because you're studying all the time, but it's great because no test is cummulative so you never have more than 2 weeks of stuff to study at once.

Ugh. That anatomy test just
owned me. 🙁

sorry. i don't think i did so hot on my first test today either🙁 i'm just really hoping i passed!

honestly, buying an expensive stethescope is a waste of money. It looks cool though so I guess if you want to do it, go ahead! I have a classic II and it does everything I need it to.

dingy/lstone: my friend says everything on the miami tests are straight from the lecture and lecture powerpoints, that's supposedly true throughout med school there.

Our school hooked us up with a diag kit from Welch Allyn. Got the Harvey DLX. It makes no difference to me.

damn that sucks, i hate watching lectures! that is just soooo not my studying style. learning off of lectures is basically trying to think the way another person does, at the pace he presents it, terribly learning style 😡

Hey, you know if we curve for tests? I like your optimism! Hope we all passed :xf: :xf: :xf:

Define "hooked up." As in free, $600 instead of $900, or like $200?

Also, as stupid as this may sound, I don't want to have the same stuff as everybody else unless there is a really good reason. It would also help my stuff from getting lost.

I'll just borrow my diag kit from friends who have their small groups on different days than me.

btw, im pretty glad im doing mstp. i think im in the best lab possible for me. pretty much declared the lab for phd, hopefully starting a transgenic mice line (cre/lox) that can cut down on my grad portion (ill be okay if it doesnt, my lab pretty much rocks)

i bet you would be taking turns w/n your small groups so you could borrow w/n your group and you would not be the only one to do so

i would always do a google search for book title + pdf/ebook to see if google books or elsevier publishing has them online for free. alberts molec and bio of the cell (useless but a good book) is available for content search via pubmed/nih

things i find cool

radiographs (cts, mris, xrays)
electron microscopy (****s ridiculous. i love my confocals and whatnot, but EMs >>>)

the way i study for anatomy (i have them 2 days running of the week along with histo)

skim through powerpoint slides. watch lecture (we have to do this on our own time, last year's, but we have a great prof and he's entertaining) while making minor notes in my printout (i do 1 slide per page, thanks lab, you can cover up the structures/words and test yourself that way). i have netters open but i dont usually have to look at it anymore (useful in lab or for certain small structures, imaginary triangles, quadrangles, hexagons and pentagons and what not). this is appx 1 hour.

then i quickly read through the lab note handouts (pretty thorough), while doing our non-graded prelab assnment (pretty helpful). i watch dissection vids if neccessary (but they aren't anymore for me, its pretty logical/redundant/some gunner knows that **** already). watch prossections online (great)

some tool made a table of innervations/vessles. i add to it.
