Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What kind away rotation requires you to have 2 LOR(that will be used for your residency application) + your personal statement? An away rotation that I won't be going to, lol. Back to the drawing board trying to find a 2nd away rotation(hope it's not too late)

So I'm assuming you won't be joining me at MUSC?

I'll be in Arizona in less than 2 months. Crazy. So much going on between now and then. OB shelf, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS, learning about wtf to do on my away rotations...

contrats!! you are the bomb-diggity.
3rd year aint got nothing on you girl!

those of you doing away rotations.....what are you doing with your places of residence while you are away?!
I ended up just leaving mine empty. But at least i had a free place to stay where i was rotating, so i wasn't paying double rent.

Heyyyyy Yoda! We meet again. 🙂

Psst c/o 14 - enjoy 4th year, cause you can't get it back (or repeat it, although that would have been fun)

:hello:

I have a free place to stay for one of the months but second away will be either in Nashville or Cinci and I don't know anyone who would let me bum at their place for a month in either of those two cities.

Theres lots of repeat topics anyways. Focus on knowing the material over raw questions finished.

Thanks. I need some reinforcement. I have 14 days to study and I'm pretty sure I can do it. It's just getting quite overwhelming right now. Especially considering I'm on OB for the next 2.5 weeks and have that shelf to worry about as well.

Nope. Not worth it.

I'm seeing if I can get a spot in Seattle right now.

Also, pushed back my step 2 CK to August. I have just been super busy this past month and don't feel like I could pull it off right now.

That's cool.

I don't really have that option unfortunately. All my time after CK will be used to prepare for my RadOnc aways and take CS and I'm not taking either of those while I'm away.

Just poor form on my part for not studying more during Psych.

dang yall, i havent been on here in a texas minute

A whole week? I know we're busy but it can't be that bad.

I'm procrastinating with OB studying so much since I know after the shelf is over I have to study hardcore for CK for two weeks.

So close to being done - 3 days plus a shelf. Then the fun begins.

Last shelf tomorrow. I can already feel the pall of burn out and depression lifting off me.

I need some advice. I worked with an attending 6 months ago extensively during a rotation but have not spoke with him since then. I want a letter of rec from him, but not sure if I should send an email just to meet up and talk about surgery and ask for LOR during the meeting, or just put that in the meeting (the down side is I hope they remember me from the email alone). What do y all think?

OSU - I would just ask him. A program director told our class recently to just do it and nobody likes someone who hangs around and sets up meetings just to ask.

Step 2 studying begins today. 14 days left. Summer vacation was yesterday.

I'd email saying that working with him left a big impact on you and that you'd like him to be one of your letter writers. Offer to meet to go over your CV+personal statement and discuss any additional info but don't meet pretending its about something else, they'll see through it and think its lame. Being direct is a good thing.

In other news: I am thinking of getting one of dem travel rewards credit cards.....good/bad idea and which one would you recommend?
I am kind of liking this Southwest (Plus) one but wanted to see what you guys know about this mess. Cause I am credit card-dumb.

I know this is just me being paranoid, but reading the Step 2 board makes me more nervous about passing CS than doing well on CK. Seems like everybody over there failed...

Tot, you should definitely get some travel reward card. Pick the one that has the most direct flights to places you think you'll be going and has the best upfront reward. So if Southwest gives you more miles up front, get it. If American or Delta do and you think you'll be using them a lot, get that one instead. I've heard Southwest is the best one, but Delta would have ATL perks for you.

I feel like half my class is taking it this week since it's our week off and nobody I know even studied. They are lowering the passing rate from like 99 to 95 but it doesn't sound like it should be something to worry about as long as you speak English and are not a total creep.

Rewards cards are a good idea. I mostly only know about hotel ones, not so much the airlines. IHG tends to have the best upfront rewards, starwoods is also pretty good, hyatt has a good card.. I hear hilton devalues their points more often than the others. Really depends what hotels/ airlines you like to use though. capital one venture is good if you don't want something company and service specific. Also look to see which cards have no international/currency transaction fees, it's a nice perk when you leave the country.

I was more worried about CS as well, but remember most people do pass, and the step 2 forum is just a congregation of the minority that didn't. It is definitely a BS test but there's nothing any of us can do about it right now 🙁.

I don't know how we used to just study for hours on end. After third year, where you have to consolidate shelf studying into very small windows, I just can't do it anymore. I almost feel like giving myself 14 days for Step 2 was too much. Not used to having so much time to sleep and study. It's boring.

Studying is still boring, but I don't think I could ever feel that way about sleep.

Hey Met, did you get your (T)OSCE grade yet?
Just a heads up, our SPs always seem to be out for blood when it comes to grading, so even if its not stellar (I didn't break 85% overall on any of those stations) don't worry too much. From everything I heard the upperclassmen say, this is way rougher than CS. Hope that does anything to calm you down 🙂. If not, read the comments your SPs wrote, I guarantee at least 1 of them is a comedian lol

I am seriously leaning towards the Southwest card but their upfront reward requires you to spend 2K in the first 3 months.....HOW? I most definitely do not spend that much on my card (600+/month). None of the other ones are much better though and at least this gives you enough for 2 roundtrip flights on Southwest or Airtran....I am kind of thinking I am in. Maybe I can get my mom to use the card to rack up that 2K. lol

Yeah my TOSCE grade was not very good. It may have rattled my confidence a bit, but I figure it's just because I didn't prepare. It's really awesome you guys let us start coming over there. I couldn't imagine showing up for CS without at least having one practice thing first.

We're going to be residents this time next year. Some of us even sooner.

Step 2 CK in 4 days. Last time ever sitting in a library for 8+ hours a day for almost 2 weeks.

Two weeks until I leave for CS and three months of always. Starting radiology tomorrow and need to spend as much time as possible outside that learning how to do radiation oncology.

But CK is done!

Sorry I am late with the well wishes for CK, Met, but I am sure you crushed it. Beast!
I am currently studying for mine on the 27th
And CS on the 18th
Oh and apparently UCinci away for september already filled up their spots. WTFGDit! ughhh
But, I was wondering if any of you LSU peeps could fill me in on how you guys go about getting housing for your BR rotations? Dr. Nuss heavily hinted that I need to rotate with them so I am trying to figure out a way to swing it. HELP!

PS, so I don't think that 2k spending requirement for my shiny new rewards card is going to be a problem, what with my car probably needing a rebult transmission and all. Lucky how all that works out. lol

Tat, we get housing at a nearby place now and is much nicer than before. I can try and hunt down an email that may help you out.

Well this whole learning radiation oncology thing isn't working out so well. I have to learn it myself if none of the doctors around here have any time or availability these next weeks. Guess ill show up to my first away knowing nothing. Le sigh...

Why do we have to take CK? It's so stupid. I just have it hanging over my head. I shouldn't be worried about it, it's super easy, but I just know this is the one thing standing between me and my aways.

I take it in a little over a week and have no motivation to practice or study. But then again, you could lose so much if you fail. Stupid test. It just needs to die. I'd rather pay the USMLE $2000 and just be on my way than pay $1200 and take this stupid thing.

Good luck to everyone with CS and CK on the near horizon.

I'm doing CK at the end of Sept as of now--considering moving it back 2 weeks to get 1 more rotation in.

I agree 100% on CS being a way unncecessary stressor. If I fail a 1200$ test, I'll cry.

Last weekend in NOLA until late October. Wondering how much I should actually be reading stuff for CS rather than enjoying my remaining days here.

Has anybody here taken CS (other than TRex?)? Just curious.

But hey, at least come Tuesday evening, I'll be done with ALL med school tests!

Even though I am facebook friends with like 75% of you so you'd see this there anyway, just for old time's sake:
OMG UofCinci rotation for my second away!!😍

🙂 Congrats!

OB/Gyn shelf Friday. So over studying. 👎 I'm like 75% sure this is what I want to do with my life, but that doesn't make studying any better.

Step 2 CS done, and now I'm in Vegas for the night. This road trip has been amazing. Carlsbad Caverns, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion... Just awesome. Arizona tomorrow. Whew.

ksmi-I don't know what I was expecting you to go into, maybe somethign more internal mediciney but I am glad you like ObGyn, I bet you'll be stellar at it!

Congrats on being done! That is a really cool scenic sounding trip! Hope you have fun in Vegas!
Whatever you do, do not look at the threads discussing CS in the med student section....I wear I had a mental breakdown because of that bs. So did my friend who didn't listen to me and read them too.

In my new home in AZ for the next month. Very odd being in the Pacific/Arizona time zone. Also, they don't turn on streetlights here at night. Extremely dark and annoying.

Very nervous about starting my rotation tomorrow. New town, new hospital, a specialty I've committed to yet know so little about, and what is essentially a month long interview.

Hopefully they'll forgive my lack of knowledge tomorrow and I can start applying myself after I know what to expect.

:scared:

You'll be great! 😀

Starting peds tomorrow.

Spent 7 hours in the OR today for the end of a 35 hour case. Pretty sure the entire dept. had been in the OR for that case at one point or the other.

Ouch. I remember one of the attendings had a whipple scheduled one day, and i made myself scarce until after it started. I have like a three hour OR time limit.
