Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Too much stuff going on my life. Family med's annoyingness + long commute, trying to plan a banquet for a club, trying to get involved with some research I need to finish, trying to study for shelf...

Ugh I need a break and I should have taken more of one during Mardi Gras besides just drinking.

so hope this isn't a ******ed question but....is applying for aways kind of like applying to med school where you apply to like 10 for a chance at 1 spot. Or do you submit only 1 application for each specific period of time? I only really want to rotate at two places but the thought of not getting a spot at either schools is terrifying to put it mildly.

I think it's the way you think it is? I plan on submitting a bunch of applications for three spots.

I guess it works like you send in your deposit when you get an elective and if another elective you want more schedules you at the same time you tell the other one 'thanks but no thanks.'

This is just my opinion, it could be wrong.

Probably depends on the places you are applying to and what their deadlines are. I am just amazed at the places that charge for applying to away positions...

NICU isn't as bad as it could be. I do have the chill location, which helps.

How is everybody doing with away rotations? Time is getting close for that kind of stuff and I'm feeling very lost.

On ENT elective. Career decision made. It's earwax, snot, and trach secretions for me.

I'm lost and confused and overwhelmed. Immunizations, letters of good standing, transcriptions, LORs, mask fit forms...oh lordy you would think that some of these things would be more transferrable between schools.

That sounds brutal.

We just need to imagine that one year from now, we'll all be celebrating the fact that we matched (hopefully in my case).

Seriously does. I've banned myself from going over to those threads.

I initially having those types of fantastic matching day dreams but then I was enticed by the dark side. No more.

welcome to the snotty side brother 😛
seriously though...have you seen a FESS for a nasal polyp or something? it looks friggin hilarious and fun...and you get to do it solo as an intern even (at least at our program)
I don't even know how to respond when people ask me why ENT.....all I picture is how happy I am chopping out thyroids, sticking stuff up people's noses, drilling like a champ at the base or the skull or putting recon plates on da skull.
Um...I still don't know when I'm taking Step 2 :scaredy:
learned yesterday that i have to move up my CK date. Thanks Emory. Real nice. Prob going to be like July 27 for me, my CS is a week earlier.

Also Met-you guys taking the SP exam with us now? Whats up with that? I mean you are welcome and all but I am just curious...I thought you guys had your own SP program.

Not goin to SOAP threads. REFUSE to. I am already making healthcare arrangements for an impending MI in the coming year, I don't need to induce one now.

Went from having 0 research and difficulty get something started, to having 3 possibly 4 research projects or case reports fall into my lap in the last couple of weeks. That be crazy. Also, I've been told by several people to push back my CK. So, I guess I'm gonna shoot for october or something, I guess.

We don't have formal standardized patients at our school, nor have they ever done official SP exams for us. There used to be a couple of interest groups within the school that would set-up SP exams for the fourth years.

I think it's become more of a priority because the last couple of years some of the students have been blowing the exam off and a significant amount were failing CS.

Emory away application submitted. Yay.

That is EXACTLY what happened for me. Like its absurd how difficult of a time I had getting traction on any research projects over the last 3 years (seriously, embarrassingly hard). And in a matter of weeks I have 2 case reports submitted, credit as contributing author on a paper with important faculty, working on my independent project, meeting with my mentor about logistics in starting another project that I thought of on my own and a couple more projects/presentations .
WHERE WAS ALL THIS EVEN 6 months ago!

I'd be mad if I wasn't so happy. I think the craziest thing is that I am actually able to handle all of this volume while doing heavy duty rotations (I bet its the same for you too)

Why do you think you have to wait with the CK?

Oh. Yea. Failing CS looks mighty bad. Anyways, welcome. I think despite the hassle of having to do another "test" its pretty beneficial....Tulane's program was one of the pilot sites for the development of the way CS is administered...at the very least it gives you a chance to see what to expect.

Sweet. Good luck in getting the spot. I think I've decided that I want to do one at UNC and one at MUSC. 3rd AI at home. Then on the fence about whether to do a 3rd away or to use my elective on a surgical anatomy course that we have that essentially allows you to refresh the anatomy of your choosing, plus lets you practice a bunch of surgical skills.

I'm with you. Just happy to have anything at all. Just submitted my first mini-article thinga-ma-jig. First author 😎 .

Why do you think you have to wait with the CK?

I don't have to wait. I really wanted to just get it out of the way and not worry about it. Currently I have it scheduled to be at the end of our 2 week vacay after 3rd year. But I've essentially been told by my dept. chair, one of the staff, and several residents that due to my step 1 score, I shouldn't be in any hurry to take it. Some of said that I don't want to risk my step 2 score nullifying my step 1 score . One of the residents said he didn't take step 2 until februrary after he had submitted his match list. So I guess I'll follow their advice, extend my test window, and just take a month off in october and just study for a couple of weeks and chill or interview if I get some.

yeah, I'm actually interested to see how it'll be as I've never interacted with a standardized pt before.

Sounds like things are coming together for y'all. I'm dying here. I have two projects to work on right now, but I can't even touch them because of all the other crap I have going on.

Can't wait until Psych in April when I can give this research full attention. I'm tired of peds making me work weekends...

:boom:

You are going for ENT right? If nobody spoke to you about those two programs, message me at some point, I've got some T4 feedback.

your residents/attendings are silleh. Even if you hypothetically scored lower on Step 2, the general rule doesn't apply to you because your Step 1 score was so high it was a matter of missing like <5 questions or something ridic like that. So what does lower Step 2 score mean? that you missed 6? 7?....you are still stellar and no program would be foolish enough to pass you up.

And that resident who waited until feb was walking on thin ice....programs will not rank you unless they've got your Step2 score.

Personally, I am taking entire July off and heading to Atlanta to study for and take CK (CS lol) maybe do a couple of projects if I can arrange them in time, deal with Emory paperwork and visit friends/celebrate my birthday. Submit my residency application. AHHH! Then rotate at Emory, my second AI and head home by the end of September to get ready for interviews.

yeah, I'm actually interested to see how it'll be as I've never interacted with a standardized pt before.
You'll be fine, and if you aren't on the first try, at least it isn't CS!

I feel ya. I was always so tired on Medicine. Missed my weekends like crazy. You'll get it done though 🙂

Hey guys! It's been forever since I've been on the forum, and it's great to see that you all are doing well! I have a question for you all. I am looking for funding for a year-off research project at my home institution and was wondering if you guys knew where to look so late in the game. Any ideas?

This away rotation process is a pain in the buns.

Alright, who thinks they're going where?

My prospects are down to UTSW, MUSC, MCW, Iowa, Colorado. Maybe some others but who knows...

My two top picks for aways are Emory and U of Kentucky (strategic and self enlightening purposes lol).
I have 2 backup choices for each that I like nearly as much (U of Louisville, U of Florida, UTMB, and U of Tennessee)
Those alternates have extra requirements though which is lame. Bro tip (lol): I have a spreadsheet going to keep track of what I need done.

bumpity bump bump.

also, so over third year. ugh. can't wait for the awesomeness of 4th year to shine down.

Agreed. After finishing Peds Tuesday, I only have psych and OB left. Two things that will help very little for my future career. So over it.

Step 2 CS scheduled (although not the date or city I wanted).

Almost all things for VSAS obtained (I hope). Final rotation sites decided: Iowa, UTSW, MUSC. If things fall through with one of these next choices are Colorado, Louisville, MCW. Man I hope these work out.

I'm writing a personal statement for an away. What is this hell?

That sucks. So glad I don't have to pull that.

Too bad Louisiana has less medical insurance than most states. At least we're not Texas though. :xf: for getting aways in TX and SC so that I only have to buy extra insurance for 1 month.

So my attending at Ochsner is making me question my U of Kentucky choice and MUSC feels like a better choice. We should totes rotate there together in Sept! You in? Ok great! See you then! lol

Visionary: my condolences. that sucks :[

ENT peeps: we had a patient with CSF leak...when we went to fix it-there was brain hanging out in her freaking nose! What the helllllllll!
😍
also...whenever we have to do a laryngectomy...I can't help but feel a little like Ursula from Little Mermaid. lulz

Well my goal is to be at MUSC from mid/late Sept to October so yeah.

I think I'm gonna do MUSC and UTSW..... may do UVA instead of the latter but we'll see.

No one's coming to visit me for aways??? Dislike. 👎

Too cold up there!

Also - hi everyone! I've been stalking this forum as always.

Was done with all my required rotations in December (yay 1.5 yrs of pre-clin). Did a month of radiation oncology (the engineer in me 😍 the technology... but the actual day-to-day of not diagnosing and being very hands off = 😴), a month of ophthalmology (omg eye balls and eye ball surgery = 😱 👍👍) and now I'm studying for Step 1 😡

2 weeks, 3 days and it's go time :scared:. After that, I come back to do my emergency medicine sub I. It's basically come down to EM vs. Ophtho for me. Never thought I'd say that when I started med school (ok, maybe EM I would've said). I thought I was more like tats. Guess not :meanie:

Hi everyone! Away stuff is very confusing. Yay for everyone figuring out what they want to be when they grow up though! 🙂

I think I'm going to try for UNC in August and MUSC or USC-Palmetto in September. Maybe I'll see some of you in South Carolina!

Hey!
what specialty are you doing your aways in?

Met: I am fickle...I think I will try and go for Cincinnati in Sept instead of staying down south at MUSC

Psych! I just finished a child psych elective and absolutely loved it, so that's the plan. 🙂

Congrats on choosing ENT! Those were by far my favorite surgeries to watch, but I'm definitely not meant to be a surgeon. 😛

Hi all! It's been a while, how's everyone doing?

I've also lurked here a bit, but now that I'm done with third-year rotations and Step 1, I thought I'd say hello.

Cool to see that everyone is finding their place. I'm going to be an EM doc when I grow up and most likely will stay here in NYC for residency.

Any other EM folks?

Has anyone ever heard of programs that don't give interviews if you haven't taken Step 2 CK by September?

Ah! I am excited for you! I thought psych was pretty dang fun, I got really comfortable with interviewing all kinds of patients (which helps me with the more typical interview too) and I got to see some real turn arounds in people's condition. Congrats on finding your peeps!
I love ENT so much, I could probably be confused for a psych patient. I am sure everyone has these moments though when you look at what you'll be doing for the rest of your life and wonder "how is it even fair that my field is so much awesomer than everything else?!?!":laugh:

Congrats on finding where you belong. I loved EM rotation because you basically got to do anything you really wanted to ( suture, use pulse vac, wire a jaw shut, whatever). Those residents were super nice.
A bunch of my classmates are goin for it, the dept we rotate with tends to be on the more exciting side so there are a lot of fans. 🙂

Change of pace: so dating a resident that you've previously rotated with is bad news right?
juuuuust hypothetically.

All this VSAS stuff is stressful. I just worry that 2 months later I'll get an email saying I didn't do it right and now my entire fourth year, therefore my future, is messed up. Hopefully by the end of today I'll have three applications in for three spots though and only have to apply for potential backups from here on.

My friend is about to get married to his surgery resident so it can work out well.

Question for those of you doing VSAS:

I've applied to three places for three different months of rotations. Do I need to "back up" any of these months? I'd hate to lose an away if one of these fall through. Do I need to apply to the same place but for a different month to ensure I get that place? Just wondering.

I was also planning on applying to two or so more places for these same time frames but their apps don't open until May. This question is mainly to cross-cover at the same school but for different time periods. Thanks.

I don't think there's a problem applying to multiple blocks for a program. I did that to UTSW and it asks how many electives do you expect to schedule for them and then you can order your block date preferences.

Anybody have any tips for studying for Peds?

I'll let you know when I get my grade back.

I used Case Files and UWorld questions all done within 2 weeks of test. There's also a good review floating around there that's about 24 pages. I tried to read Blueprints sections that were relevant to my wards teams but that was very far away from shelf, so it didn't help much.

Pre-test was golden for me, especially with the developmental questions.

Aww I love when people are so excited about their future fields. You're going to be an amazing ENT! 🙂

Nah I think as long as the rotation's over you're fine. Our surgery director told us that she'd set it up and buy us dinner if we wanted to date a resident as long as it was after the clerkship was over. 😛

Okay, just submitted second dates for away applications at UTSW and MUSC. It's going to be really annoying waiting for all these to come back.

Is that on VSAS? Do you just select the same rotations again and pick different dates, so you have 2 requests for each?

<<<I'd like to call everybody's attention to my new little "user title" thingy that has been changed to reflect the appropriate bodily secretion for my field :naughty::laugh:

That is mighty nice of your surgery director...yet somehow I am kind of picturing her as the "Millionaire Matchmaker" lady. omgpleasedon'tletanyoneimportanttomyentfuturereadthis

I don't think anything is gonna happen with erm this hypothetical super cute resident...but he sure is fun to make doe eyes at...hypothetically. lol

you guys are making me scared now. my reaction to the option of an alternate date for rotation was "ain't nobody got time for that!" rethinking that position now.😡
