Actually, since we were on the subject of new med schools a second ago, there's a new med school in Michigan for our class. Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. I had surgery at Beaumont when I tore my ACL, and Beaumont is a nice hospital with new facilities--at least the facilities I saw. It's north of Detroit in a really nice part of the suburbs.

i guess i will look into it..but i am really trying to stay on east coast =)

isnt FIU new too..i think their first class was maybe last yr or the yr before..are these schools accredited as us med schools?

simran are you going to the SMDEP reunion? too bad it's in DC and i live in TX 🙁

i didnt even knwo there would be one. when is it?

Wassup 2014, how is everything coming along? Yall getting nervous yet?

As treasurer of my senior college, I don't know how much good my rebellion would do
II was in SGA for 3.5 years and got sick of it

The SGA would vote on something and we would approve it, but then it would go to the admin and they would veto it. It seemed kind of ptless. We would try to give the students what they wanted and needed but then the Admin would screw us over...so whats the pt of even having it?

That's why I haven't been in SG until now. I chose RHA because the Dept. of Res Life is super receptive to what we have to say. Me and the Pres. this year worked it out that RHA gets $50000 to allocate to different projects that the residents want done. That's in addition to our current $50000 budget. I feel SG will feel like I'm getting absolutely nothing done.

Just on a side note for those still in school. Are any of you just wanting this semester to be over so you can start on the applications? These last couple months are draaaaaaaging on for me.🙁

Or sitting around just working and waiting to start medical school!!!

im probably not going to it even though its very close to where i live. this coming weekend is a bit crazy for me! =)

i feel like time is flying!! may 2nd feels so close =) have you guys started working on your secondaries? I am probably going to start right after taking my mcats...by using prompts from last year..

for those 2014ers out there..wuts the earliest u can be done with secondaries? I am planning to submit my amcas early june after my mcat scores come in. and also..how much time did you spend on the essays? I am planning to go back to working full time after mcats so I just want to plan it out beforehand..

YES!!!!!

i take the MCAT in july, have started studying a few weeks ago in between all the stuff i have to do for other classes...

i wish i didnt have to take them so i could just study and start the app!

Im gonna assume you meant 2013ers, but you wont start getting secondaries until beginning of july maybe end of june, and I didnt receive my last secondary until October. I would spend as much time as the essays as you can. You dont want a crappy essay to ruin your chance at a school. Just try to turn them in timely, but at the same time make sure they are well written. Some of my secondaries I was able to turn in that same day, and others with more lengthy essays i didnt turn in until about a week later.

my test is lesss than a month away and school work is piling up on me. i don't know how much i can take.

going onto SDN is the only way i can stay positive and keep working harder =)

of course i can't forget chubbychaser. he is where i can get some comic relief from 🙂 thank you chubbychaser!

That's a great idea. What kind of overachieving pre-meds would we be if we didn't start working on our secondaries before we got them? That gives me more motivation to finalize my PS, so I can move on to other essays like "How will you make the entering class at [insert med school here] diverse?"

On the waiting note, I just learned today that my PI expects me to graduate with a master's in August. That means that I'll be looking for jobs for my gap year. From a first glance, jobs available in my area look plentiful thanks to EMT experience. If I can land a research job in town though, that would be amazing. I'll probably be preoccupied with this preliminary job search thing for the next week. It's all I seem to be able to think about tonight.

i meant 2013ers =)

ok that sounds good. yea I agree with not rushing those! Im excited for the process to start =)

yes. overachieving premeds we are! =) but i cant even think abt secondaries until i rock the mcats =)

the job hunt is addictive..i spent three hrs yesterday sprucing up a coverletter for a job..im trying to figure out if i want to go back to my old job(if they woudl take me back) or if i should apply and see what happens..the thing is right now i dont want to be looking and writing cover letters when mcat is the most imp. priority..but its in the back of my mind..the good thing about waiting until i find a job i acutally like is that it gives me time to work on my amcas applications and secondaries which is nice. but earning is also nice so we will see =)

Oh my goodness i can totally relate to how school is dragging on and on. Thinking about med skl apps makes me come to this website- and this has become my new "facebook". I waste so much time here when I really should be studying for tests/doing work.

Haha oh well 🙂

i agree..i quit facebook..so its sdn and flickr for me =)

Hey folks - random question here.

I know this is a bit off in the future, but that's not new to any of you here, so it seems...
I read something the other day that there are times during the application cycle that you do NOT want to apply to med school. Obviously, most people say that the best idea is to send them in as soon as possible after you have your application together and AMCAS is finished/open, etc. But the statement I said made me wonder.. if you send in your application TOO early, are they going to get a whole bunch of applications right at once? [this question is mostly for schools with rolling admissions]. Obviously you wouldn't want to be last either, as too late can hurt your chances. Personally, I would be nervous not to send it in pretty early.

Any thoughts?

Not a chance. Send it in early...if they are iffy about you, they will put your application in the maybe pile and come back to you later.

I gave up facebook for 10 days before my MCAT. First thing I did when I got home was reactivate it. Granted I do spend way more time on here then there. Interesting things are actually discussed here. Facebook just tells my people's statuses... boring!! I just can't give it up though, too many pictures on there.

giving up facebook was ok..giving up meat was harder =)

facebook made me a stalker and i hated it..now i dont know what neone else is doing..and i think its good! =)

but yes i do miss the pcitures and staying in touch with people i know=)

i think i have deactivated it for good..u just have to log back in to activate it..its very tempting =)

Vegetarian is tough but I kinda like it. I'm only going to be without meat until Easter though.

I do suggest no facebook until the MCAT. When I was studying for the MCAT, my friends probably got so tired of my antisocialness. It probably helped that my gf was in France. Until the week before, the only time I'd spend more than 4-5 hrs/day studying was every once in a while on a Saturday. I spread out the studying from Jan through the end of May

Dietrick and west end are AMAZING

I miss West End. Dietrick, not so much. But I was there pre-renovation, so it was pretty bad at the time... and don't get me started on Owens...😡

I think the general rule of thumb is within two weeks of invitation (most invite you to fill out a secondary, but a few (Rush, etc) are self-service), but as always, sooner is better. There are a few schools that will have secondary prompts ready to go in June (WashU), but the bulk of them will come in July. This isn't really an omg-I'm-drowning-in-secondaries problem unless you apply to a million schools 🙂hello::laugh:). However, it's still pretty manageable, as many schools ask the same questions. It's the tweaking and individualizing that will probably take the bulk of your time.

Times not to apply: before you're invited, after the deadline has passed (and by then, you're already 3-4 months too late):luck:

Oh shnap- I'm vegetarian too! Yeah I'm taking the MCATS late (July 31- very bad planning on my part- but I can't do much about it now) - so I think I will deactivate my account like you guys did. Hopefully I will be able to resist reactivating it!!

I gave up my facebook about a month ago. I gave a friend the password and asked her to change it, that way I couldn't just reactivate it myself. Sat. I get it back. 🙂

this mcat is making me try all sort of strange stuff..
1. i have gone vegetarian..well it was gonna be for the month of march..but now im thinking perhaps april..and until the app season is over..a sacrifice to gods above? =)

yea i feel good wihtout facebook..no more clutter in my life.

good to hear secondaries arent overwhelming...i was thinking of applying to 30 schools is that too much..i guess it depends on my mcat score..but im not sure exactly wut people mean when they say "apply broadly"

does anyone else have a really good method for avoiding silly mistakes. im very annoyed with myself because in each exam i miss a few questions because 1. i completely skip it 2. i read the question wrogn 3. ignore anwers that are in the passage..i feel like if i corrected these errors i would be able to break a 30..right now the highest i have scored is 29..today is a FL we will see how it goes..but i feel like I run out of time in PS so its hard for me to be thorough..and BS i am left with 20 minutes..but even when i go back..i cant seem to catch my errors easily..oh well..

yea i need to figure something about my PS..i have a working draft..but i dont really like it..but i guess i will just work on it more after may 2nd =)

30 schools seems like a lot. But idk what broadly means either. I'm aiming for 10-15 apps though. Hopefully, my lack of broadness won't hurt me too much.

As far as MCAT, idk what to tell you. Do you find it hard to focus during the test? Is that why you miss little things? I did that on practically all my practice tests because I was worrying about other stuff. But on test day, I didn't I knew I had to bring my A game and now worry about other insignificant things. Seemed to work out for me, but idk how to help with the practices. It's hard to convince yourself that these are as important as the real thing.

What we generally mean when we say apply broadly is to pick schools that aren't just ivies/reaches and then tack on a few well-chosen not-all-that-safe-safeties. I think most people go for around 15-20. I kinda doubled that figure and was thus buried under a mountain of secondaries... took me a while to dig out from that one...

I have nothing against VT. I had a lot of good friends that went there (and got denied from UVA).

Hey Simran, are you thinking about applying to Carillion next year? It's a new med school at afiliated with VT. It's actually in Roanoke. I'm thinking about it because I do kind of want to stay in state. I also think it'd be cool to have such a small class. I think I saw that their class size is going to be 40 students. I don't know about going to a med school in their first year though. I also wonder if it'll be state supported (relatively cheap and easier to get into) or private (expensive). I guess I'll wait and see if it gets acredited and then think about applying.

i didnt even realize tech was opneing their own med school! yes i would def. consider it if it were accredited. im in the same boat as u..i would prefer to go back to uva if they would accept me =) but ideally it would be instate..im applying up and down east coast..we will see what happens..i think for me..so much of it depends on this mcat =)

i think tech and uva have thier own advantages..but a teacher at tech told me i was working too hard..i thought it was a bit weird. and also i had this god awful roommate freshmen year which kinda ruined the whole college experience for me..uva was personally jsut a better fit for me...tech had awesome food thouh.. =)

Oh, sweet. They're going to have an MD school!👍🙂

haha..got to love it =) you must have gone near valentine's day..they usually have the show then =) they do it every year. that is really funny though =)..myuu who did you have for gen chem at tech? i had hanson first semester and amateus second semester..

Oh, god. I was in honors chem for engineers and thus got stuck with Glanville.

simran are you going to the SMDEP reunion? too bad it's in DC and i live in TX 🙁

that's awesome...a fellow alum...but I participated when it was still called the MMEP...and when Rice and Baylor were still involved

just to let you know (although I am sure you already do)...adcoms love this program (at least at the places where I interviewed)

im glad adcoms love the smdep program =)

so just got my butt kicked on the PS section..god i really need to review buyoncy..and i always feel rushed in PS like i would get more right if i just had to finsih all my calculations..feeling frstruated..but hoepfuilly the other two sectgions will go better..on my 10 min break right now=)

Head-math and rounding are your friends!!👍:luck:

head math is something that needs to be more worked on..now im even more annoyed..just finished the vr section..and at the end..had like 8 seconds for 2 questions cuz i didnt realize i overlooked then..ugh..this attention to detail thing really needs to get better...massively annoyed. 😡

Rounding is not my friend!! I always confuse myself with it. I hate having unexact answers. So if I did round I'd want to go back and see how much it changed my answer and what direction and if I had used a number maybe with one more decimal how much closer would I be... Let's just say using g=10 took me a while to accept. I did all the math out on my test. But I guess I'm in practice while most people aren't. Doing the whole calculation was just easier and faster than the rounding thing, for me at least. But I know I'm in the minority here. And that minority probably only consists of me... haha.

i know!!! 🙂 go SMDEP!

did you hear? Rice and Baylor College of Medicine have met to talk about merging. BCM is in a financial crisis ever since they split with Methodist Hospital. I think merging Rice U with BCM will make this institution in the top 10 in the US for a long time.

Yeaaaah... it was really, really hard for me to let go. It did save me a ton of time (or a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to geico), though.👍

Not a chance...texas sucks too big of balls for them to be top 10 in anything worthwhile.

I wish I could do everything that way, unfortunately MCAT was the only time I was able to do that. Honestly, this makes things so much easier for me because I always screw my numbers up. Sometimes I wonder if I'm dyslexic.
