Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, that's what's so hard about interpreting things that happen in the Bible. You know what people said. Of course, we can never know why God does what He does. And then the people's intentions are rarely clear either. So hard to figure out what's actually wrong and right and such.

The Bible is difficult to interpret because it is cobbled together from the scribblings of numerous, fairly clueless authors who were desperately trying to understand the confusing and cruel world around them.

It's not even a particularly good or moral book. Its few teachings worth paying attention to are shadowed by the immoral and downright disgusting content present in both Old and New Testaments. It does not take much time to discover this less-than-holy content:

http://www.evilbible.com/Rape.htm
http://www.evilbible.com/Murder.htm
http://www.evilbible.com/Slavery.htm

I believe human beings are much more likely to get things "right" by way of their own moral compasses and by careful and thoughtful discussion of controversial topics, not by blind obedience to ancient texts written by religious fundamentalists.

Sorry for the rant, but tolerance toward religion is fine as long as it minds its own business and doesn't harm/interfere with the lives of others. It hasn't met these criteria in my opinion.

Because human beings have such a great track record of getting things "right..."🙄

I won't get into an endless debate about this, and won't argue about it here at length, especially on a forum not meant for this topic. If you want to PM my, feel free and I would be happy to discuss these views with you.

Reality: The old testament essentially records a history of mankind with some really cool prophetic stuff thrown in that skeptics have yet to disprove...but there has been evidence in support of it throughout the ages. People who OBJECTIVELY try to prove the Bible wrong here tend to end up believing in it. Other people usually just don't care and want to justify their lifestyles. This section shows the reason people will never "get it right" on thier own. No one can ever be "good." No way, no how. There will always be a problem with the "real person on the inside" ie. what is called "the heart."

You can always argue "oh, the people who wrote the texts are such and such" and "how do we know this or that..." This is an uneducated and futile attempt to justify not understanding it or not wanting to. Also, in the context of the cultures and peoples of the time, the Bible is actually pretty tame. Do you know what people did to worship their gods back then? Yeah, not anywhere near as "violent and evil" as what God told the Israelites to do. And he told them to do those things for good reason that can not be justified through human understanding.

The new testament is God's way of reaching out to people.

The truth about this section: Jesus was most critical of "religious" people. Jesus reached out to those society rejected. If you don't believe in Jesus or His message, then that's your decision. If you want to belittle those that do, you can do that, its your right to voice your views. But everyone has that same right. Probably not here though. Again, feel free to PM me if you would like.

whoa there:scared:. Its all good no need to go on an off topic hateful rant 🙂

Eh, it's a free country. Too many people forget that one way or the other. But, I would agree that this probably isn't the best place to discuss personal views such as this.

Not moral, by whose standard?

Exactly. I find it interesting that people can say "there is no right or wrong." Really? Or that we "all have our own standard." Well, if you really believe that I guess its your right, but these same people tend to be the first to complain when someone "wrongs them." Oh well.

Now, back to 2014!!!

yeah, i did mean blah friday. weekends are too lonely in this city.

in ny seriously????😕. If youre lonely im sure blue would be glad to keep you company 😉

yeah, in nyc. it's not really the city's fault. mostly just that my friends suck, and i don't have so many to begin with.

yeah. i do love nyc, but i'm feeling like i'm very ready to move. it's easier to feel like you have a community in a smaller place. although i guess starting med school will help with that regardless of where i am.

From my experience, just about everyone that is considers themselves adherents to a religion picks and chooses what they want to follow and believe, even from their chosen book. Thus they claim to appeal to some absolute moral standard (ie the word of God) yet clearly they are developing their own set of morals.

you and me both. i dont think thats uncommon for many of the high-posters here.

. You guys should hang out with each other, and not on SDN.

i think all of us that post a lot in this thread should hang out irl. meet up at a starbucks or something, and bring our laptops. then we can post in this thread, and then giggle while looking into eachother's eyes over our lattes :scared:

MaryLennox is back!!! :woot: Everyone else from back in the day abandoned 2014, well except Lukkie I guess. But he did disappear for awhile back then too.

He's not flying. More like gliding.

I'm not.

it makes sense to apply to schools like NYU, MSSM, WC, if you have the high GPA, MCAT, or whatever. These schools subsidize housing, which means you are probably going to be paying less than you would for apartments in (wherever). The chance to live in NYC for $500 a month rent is pretty sick.

so how much is rent for a good 1-bedroom or a studio apartment in NYC, close to school?

for realsies. you don't even want to know how much my rent is going to be starting august 10.

a studio close to which school? in washington heights (columbia) it would likely be more reasonable than on the UES (cornell) or in kips bay (NYU). on the UES you find studios for as much as $1800-2000/month. seriously. browse on craigslist if you're curious.

LOL @ getting a studio in NYC. thats baller status dude. prices are down right now but I've looked and mid-range studios are at 2.4 grand a month ish now on the UES near the two schools. NYU would be just as tough of a location unless u wanna live "near" their undergrad school on Av. A and B then you could go down to 1.5ish for a studio. You could also go horizontal to brooklyn and cut prices. No matter how close it seems, commuting sucks. Even though subways in NYC>>>>, people on the trains just look so unhappy.

I paid 1800 a month to SHARE ONE room WITH someone in what really was a 2 BR/1 bath (so 4 ppl total) apartment near union sq for a few summers. I'm sure prices havn't really gone down.

with that said, food in NYC is better and cheaper (if you look), than philly and much more so than Boston, I think.

I don't mean groceries, btw

Starting July 1, I'll be paying $235/mo + ~$130 in utilities. Obviously I'm not in NYC.

wow are you in the close-to-DC part of VA?

in Philly, near Penn, its about $600-$800 for a studio. I would say center city would be around the same, bit higher, and Rittenhouse would be a bit higher.

"class of 2013 pwns you!" or "too bad you 2014ers aren't as good as us 2013ers!!!!@" or some other such *****ic thing ad naseum.

I actually don't play too much Metallica anymore, that's just what got me started into learning to play things that require some skill.
I play a lot of instrumental guitar music (Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson), Dream Theater, a lot of metal that doesn't scream (Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Iron Maiden), and a lot of regular rock stuff (3 Doors Down, Goo Goo Dolls, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin).
I like playing the blues a lot more than I like listening to it. Plus a lot of metal/rock guitar is just fast blues stuff. I'm also always down for a nice acoustic ballad, preferably with someone to harmonize vocals with me. That's always fun.

Nice, man. That sounds like some fun stuff to play. I'm going to start getting back into now as a form of stress management, because I'm wasting entirely too much time on places like SDN...

Now, I shall stop my petty arguments with high schoolers.

Someone tell me about their day and something interesting that happened. I'm super glad I brought a book to the doctor. I was there for 2.5 hours but I got a lot of reading done. 👍

What are you reading?

had a nice discussion about the bible with someone at work

I'm going to guess that it ended with your guys deciding the book is a better paperweight than a religious philosophy?

The woman I was discussing it with said no, Saul was absolutely not justified in the action. God told him to do x, he should have done x. Much like if your attending tells you to piss on the wall while the patient watches, you piss on the wall while the patient watches.

I suggested, we need to know what Saul's true intentions were in saving the spoils and the king. Were it motivated by greed, perhaps not. But maybe he was rewarding his troops for a job well done - what good would it have been to simply slaughter the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings? Although, one can argue that the LORD would offer far greater reward for obedience, than that which was attained from the Amalekites.

Then we're back to square one

Any good conqueror knows that you must leave survivors to tell of your domination. You become more feared by the the general populous and take a more definitive step towards mandating your ideals, which is ultimately what Catholics want to do anyway...

I'm not a fan. I agree with Lukkie on this one, but then again I think people who follow anything blindly are really the sheep that must be slaughtered.

I keep being a jerk to people close to me. What's wrong with me?

I feel like this a lot, man. It's weird, because sometimes you feel with all your being that you want to be nice you're just so angry or upset with someone that you can't allow yourself to do it. Then it perpetuates a cycle.

The best course of action is to say what you feel, man. Then if someone doesn't like it or they think they can take advantage of the situation, then you can just tell them to F-off or abstain from interacting with them.

Anyway, hope you feel better, man.

dude....serious wow i knew NYC was expensive but thats ****ing insane. I thought cali was bad...i need to move to the midwest again, **** out there was so cheap it was disgusting...😛. Do the SUNY schools have cheap housing or is it only MSSM, NYU, columbia?

This is hogwash. You can justify anything then, as long as you drape it under the umbrella of God...

I don't want to get into a religious debate, but the atrocities that have been committed by the church far outweigh those committed against it.

anyone vote to stop getting into relegious debates? Serious if you love jesus then sweet if you are atheist and think you are going to be reincarnated into a tree or w/e sweet...relegion is the one topic there is no middle ground and you will never convince someone that they are right or wrong...you have your side and you will never budge. knowing that can we just chill and leave it be?

post some pics of jessica biel or something isntead OC 🙁

Disagree.

I don't think I'm applying to a single NY school... Are there good ones for average OOS applicants?

dude yes!! like every school in NY is except columbia, mt sinai, cornell, and columbia(these are good for OOS but you probably wont fare well there as an average applicant). NYMC, albany, rochester, aecom, the SUNYS are all very good for OOS. If you only wanted to add a few, albany, nymc, aecom, and rochester are very excellent choices to add. The sunys are friendly but not as much as the previous 4 mentioned.

Disagree.

not surprising....😛
