The Bible is difficult to interpret because it is cobbled together from the scribblings of numerous, fairly clueless authors who were desperately trying to understand the confusing and cruel world around them.
It's not even a particularly good or moral book. Its few teachings worth paying attention to are shadowed by the immoral and downright disgusting content present in both Old and New Testaments. It does not take much time to discover this less-than-holy content:

I believe human beings are much more likely to get things "right" by way of their own moral compasses and by careful and thoughtful discussion of controversial topics, not by blind obedience to ancient texts written by religious fundamentalists.
Sorry for the rant, but tolerance toward religion is fine as long as it minds its own business and doesn't harm/interfere with the lives of others. It hasn't met these criteria in my opinion.
Because human beings have such a great track record of getting things "right..."
🙄
I won't get into an endless debate about this, and won't argue about it here at length, especially on a forum not meant for this topic. If you want to PM my, feel free and I would be happy to discuss these views with you.
Reality: The old testament essentially records a history of mankind with some really cool prophetic stuff thrown in that skeptics have yet to disprove...but there has been evidence in support of it throughout the ages. People who OBJECTIVELY try to prove the Bible wrong here tend to end up believing in it. Other people usually just don't care and want to justify their lifestyles. This section shows the reason people will never "get it right" on thier own. No one can ever be "good." No way, no how. There will always be a problem with the "real person on the inside" ie. what is called "the heart."
You can always argue "oh, the people who wrote the texts are such and such" and "how do we know this or that..." This is an uneducated and futile attempt to justify not understanding it or not wanting to. Also, in the context of the cultures and peoples of the time, the Bible is actually pretty tame. Do you know what people did to worship their gods back then? Yeah, not anywhere near as "violent and evil" as what God told the Israelites to do. And he told them to do those things for good reason that can not be justified through human understanding.
The new testament is God's way of reaching out to people.
The truth about this section: Jesus was most critical of "religious" people. Jesus reached out to those society rejected. If you don't believe in Jesus or His message, then that's your decision. If you want to belittle those that do, you can do that, its your right to voice your views. But everyone has that same right. Probably not here though. Again, feel free to PM me if you would like.
whoa there

. Its all good no need to go on an off topic hateful rant
🙂
Eh, it's a free country. Too many people forget that one way or the other. But, I would agree that this probably isn't the best place to discuss personal views such as this.
Not moral, by whose standard?
Exactly. I find it interesting that people can say "there is no right or wrong." Really? Or that we "all have our own standard." Well, if you really believe that I guess its your right, but these same people tend to be the first to complain when someone "wrongs them." Oh well.
Now, back to 2014!!!
