Are any of you guys planning on having gap years while aplying this year? I know old man oc is but...thats a given😉. Is it necesarily a bad thing if i dont do any volunteering or anything during my time off? Its not that i dont want to as much as im going to be working full time...then on the weekends i want to spend time with my son before i possibly go away...for 4 years. hes going to be staying with his mother, so every wekeend im going to drive down to her (about 2hrs) and spend the weekends there. I dont want to volunteer i want to spend time with him every weekend not go tutor kids/pretend im useful in a hospital or w/e...do you think thats understandable or will i have to do at least one activity to show i care....-_-.

I'm graduating this December so I'll have a half a year of nothing. I'm gonna say I'm going to do research full-time but I'll probably relax.:meanie:

Yeah, yeah...

I would spend your time with your son. I hate to advocate this, but when you're dealing with the douche caliber of some pre-meds you've got to do what you've got to do. I would sign-up as a volunteer for a hospital, then maybe go 2 hours a week, or don't go at all. Just go enough to maintain your status as a volunteer, then if something doesn't work out this year you can put that you spent the whole year volunteering in a hospital for a few hours a week, worked full-time, and spent time with your son. You can also tell them in interviews that you're volunteering at the hospital as well.

I would say if you put in 2 hours a month they'll keep you on as a volunteer at the hospital.

do you really need to fill all 15? Whats the obsession with it? Seems everyone here somehow gets to 15😕. Could split up your shadowing if you want??

I don't know, man. I think it has to do with the fact that if you have 14 and not 15, then you are basically saying, "Yep, this is it. That's all I've got." But if you have 15 good ones they might think, "oh, this guy could have even more stuff going on that we don't know about. Let's call him in for an interview."

Oh, as far as shadowing is concerned it might look funny if I split it up, when I have so much of it.

I might get some experience at a new hospital this summer and list that... *shrugs*

lol are you joking or serious😕. If serious then im screwed for sure, i had 8 . I dont think it really matters anyways between 14 or 15.

Oh, would you list a "who's who in American College Students" award?

I dont even know what that is but if its somewhat selective (i.e not everyone gets it or its at least somewhat hard to get) then sure why not.

Oh, dude... You're in trouble...:meanie:

I don't know, man. I just feel like I'm so close to 15 it would be a shame not to have a 15th... It's like reading a whole book and stopping on the last chapter... You stopped in the middle, so it really doesn't matter for you... :meanie:😛

Downstate secondary is online. But for some reason, I don't want to do any secondaries until I actually receive e-mails from schools 6/24 onwards.

Depends. I might possibly list it with other awards, but I wouldn't list it by itself. But idk. To each his own.

Do you think I should list awards from a previous profession? They were national, regional, and state awards...

lol i hope so...all joking aside its seriously one thing i worry about...though i think its perfectly understandable why i dont have 15 activities...but i guess we shall see...hopefully they dont see me as not having done enough.

If it makes you feel better, the pdf thing they have up is all ****ed up...you can only enter one line of text on the pdf...its really odd. You cant have space between lines just one never ending sentence.

I would just enjoy your 3 days off, man.

But what if I don't have a lot of educational awards? I only have the Who's
Who one...

Will it look funny that I'm pushing pre-career awards and don't really have any new educational ones?

You are thinking too much. Schools will not sit there analyzing it that much. Put them.

mine starts typing at the bottom then goes on one long sentance...like i said its ****ed up......😕

Yeah, maybe they are beta-testing it or something. I'm cruising until the 24th.

I think your getting ocd and overthinking this whole thing. In the words of an adcom at my school "I dont even look at any awards or clubs as they are all completely useless." She did say for awards there are some exceptions like rhodes scholars and such but for the most part she and others dont give a **** about them. So I wouldnt worry. List the work awards, at the very least maybe they will be interesting and a topic of conversation at an interview...I think the work awards are much better then that college thing.

Really? That would be a real bummer if they don't look at clubs, etc. Because I have founded a club, and have been president of one club, and VP of another...

So I just got a warning with 1 point for my post about Ksmi's boredom on the last page...

Well that was one adcom. And even on sdn you can see how adcoms opinions differ. Dont worry im sure not all are like that. In general though think of what most clubs are and how utterly useless they are in college. If you founded something then cool. But how many truly make something of their expeerience such as it sounds like you did?

As for the sports thing, it depends on how long you did it and what was it? I mean intramural can mean a pick up game at the local gym...was this division 1 college athletics or something? Was it just some hobby u had or what?
