Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dammit. MDapps is going to be a lot of work for me to change.

to update you have to log in. but it says "date of amcas submission" or something, so your app cycle cannot be for 2010, it has to be 2009. but then to search apps by year, this years and last years are all squashed. boo.

WTF, how did they not catch this error before rolling it out to the general public:

'Submitted' date must be between 1/1/2010 and 8/26/2009, 'Secondary Complete' date must be between 1/1/2010 and 8/26/2009, and 'Interview Invite' date must be between 1/1/2010 and 8/26/2009.

WTF, how did they not catch this error before rolling it out to the general public:
no idea but u cant update any schools because of this. The new md apps just suck in general, hate the layout, hate the long load times, and the bugs

I agree the new MDapps sucks.. It is way more complicated and takes forever to load

Oh, I figured it out. Change you AMCAS submission date to 2009.

mornin y'all!

anyone seen district 9? I have a date tonight and we're seeing this movie...I don't deal well w/ "horror" or "scary" movies...I mean, action/thriller I'm ok -- Die Hard, Saving Private Ryan, ID4, no prob. Saw, Scream, Halloween, etc. I become a huge baby...

concernicus that I won't be able to handle this movie :scared:

It looks more like an action movie to me. But they do say that a woman is more likely to become sexually aroused after a scary movie than a comedy or chick flick... So, it sounds like a good move on the guys part. 😉

For some reason I thought you were a guy until now...

SAW I - V (or is it at VI now?) have been pretty entertaining and funny so far

I have only seen Saw I-III, II was pretty bad, III was better, but still nothing like the first. I can't believe they are still making more of them...

I saw District 9, and loved it. If you don't like scary movies, there may be a few parts that you jump at, but nothing horrible. What surprised me was the message behind the movie... it's not really about the aliens, it's about how we (humans) react to them.

Aren't they all like that? Well, aside from the ones where we are being destroyed by aliens...

I love sci fi, and I've never seen a movie like this. I don't feel bad about saying this because it's in the trailers, but: They don't attack us. At all. They get pissed later for good reason, but initially they are completely neutral and we are the aggressors, which is very different from what audiences are used to in a science fiction movie. Also note that this takes place in South Africa during the apartheid transition, there's a lot of symbolism there as well.

they cost like 10 mil to make...and they gross like 100 mil. They will keep making that trash until people stop watching.

I saw part of Saw IV last week. That's the first part of any of them I've seen since Saw I. Is it bad that I'm so desensitized that I don't even really flinch when people lose limbs or get scalped?

that means youre surgery-bound 🙂

yeah I've heard about some of the "horror"-ish parts from my roommate's boyfriend -- they seem on par w/ Saving Private Ryan or something like that, so I guess I should be ok.

I'm kind of getting excited about seeing this movie -- everyone who sees it says its awesome (though, admittedly, all the people I've spoken with have been guys).

Good morning/afternoon 2014ers!

Have any of you taught, or considered teaching for Kaplan or Princeton? is it horrible or is it a decent way to make some money? can i even get hired there in this economy?

i started filling out the app online, but it says i have to take a 45 min practice test . . . so i didn't want to do that until i was sure i really wanted to apply.

(also . . . im sure there must be some threads on this topic already but i'm on the world's slowest computer and searching is not going well. if anyone with a fast computer is bored right now, feel free to help me out) 🙂

Unrelated: I saw district nine, i think i made the mistake of going when i had no idea what it was about, and also after having a few drinks. i ended up thinking a lot of stuff was funny (when i guess it wasn't supposed to be) and i thought the plot seemed like it had a lot of holes. but apparently everyone thought it was super awesome. i just wish the lead guy wasn't such a spaz, i get that he's supposed to be a non-heroic type or whatever but the way his wife talked about him and the way he acted and talked made him hard to like/ identify with . . . i think it came awfully close to seeming like it was supposed to be funny (like shaun of the dead) especially like when he puked all over. but it wasn't. i dont know. maybe i need to watch it again sober. but also the beginning part reminded me of the office, again setting me up for a movie that i thought maybe was supposed to be kind of funny. not. if you go see it try not to laugh because you'll get dirty looks.

edited to add- i do have to say the part with the bullet magnet thing was pretty awesome

its a good experience, okay but inconsistent money

you dont have to take practice exam to teach, they just have to have a need for teachers. contact the local office directly, i think u are probably on the late side for fall

in fact, i only know of a couple of MCAT teachers for TPR and Kaplan that have actually taken the MCAT out of 20 or so instructors

its a demand thing

Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing this one. I might go later tonight.

Yeah, it's crazy that people still watch them... It pays not having big name stars and a draw for audiences.

I think it could be the way it's done. I'm with you on the desensitize part for general massacres, etc. But when it's gritty and involved torture or you can relate with the characters (i.e., Hostel, Saw I), then it's a different story. Those have more of an affect on me. I didn't even watch Hostel after I saw parts of one of the torture scenes.

Another one that got me was in Hannibal when Hannibal Lecter fed Ray Leota his brains after sauteing them right next to him. :scared:

does it go in semesters? i didnt realize that. i could always just wait and apply for spring. i guess i should have also asked what prep classes are actually like, since i couldnt afford to take one myself. lol. so what are prep classes like??

It wouldn't hurt to just apply now, because they might have a need and that way you can get the training out of the way.

where I am, they are still occasionally posting on craigslist that they need teachers and tutors. so I would go for it.

i considered it. i passed my kaplan audition and then was scheduled for a pre-training interview and got stood up TWICE by the dude. they were so disorganized and annoying that i decided i could get the extra cash in other, better ways.

So the whole "all our teachers have taken the MCAT and done well" think is a lie?:scared:

when i applied/auditioned, they explicitly said that we had to have scored in at least the 90th percentile. 😕

ive taught for both kaplan and tpr (mcat/gre) for a year and now i head the curriculum for a post bac program in the area and its highly dependent on area and what kind of immediate hiring needs they have. if they need a physics instructor immediately, they will take anyone. levels of employment is pretty dispersed between coordinators/trainers/instructors and those that market the ideology of a prep class with smart teachers that there really is an open area w/o much regulation. if people have to make money, they will.

btw, my friends writes questions for kaplan exam and she actually took the exam but did not score above a 8 on any. shes a nice girl and you dont have to be smart to write them but im just saying.

I would be interested to hear about these "other ways..." Sounds very... um... interesting... 😛

Haha . . . i was thinking it too but thought it would be kind of creepy to point out since i'm a chick too

I wanna hear from a school or something. My inbox is lonely.

Mmm hmm . . . Miss I-already-had-an-interview. You need a break. Why not get drunk if you're bored? 😀👍
