Does anyone else hate histo? I thought I woudl really like it because I took cell bio and liked that, but I just freakin hate it. I even like the teacher, just hate the course.

More than anything.

A. It's boring, and everything looks the same.
B. There's a test every 2 weeks.

I'm not a fan.

Although over the last couple of days I like it more than embryology. I'm completely at a roadblock there. :scared:

This may be a lost cause, but does anyone know how to differentiate between a promyelocyte and a myelocyte?? It's really kicking my butt...

I don't have it until the spring, but I'm definitely not looking forward to it.

How am I supposed to stalk people if Fb isn't working!? :annoyed:

I don't know what book you guys use, but Moore and Presaud is good for Embryo. Also read BRS Embryo. Fantastic. I had no idea what was going on Sunday night before my monday morning test. BRS embryo got me an A

I'm not computer savvy enough to shrink the link.

If I'm remembering correctly, there's like a larger to smaller rule. Follow the Nucleus. In the Promyelocyte, it appears to cover the entire cell. In the myelocye, it's about half, maybe a smidgen more. Metamyleocyte it starts to indent, when you get the horseshoe, you've got a band. And finally the band indents nearly completely to give off a segmented neutrophil.

You may know the last 2, but I figured completeness for the sake of context helps.

People don't seem to like the color version as well(lol), but honest to god, the way I remember something like this is:

The whole thing is dark purple=promyelocyte.
The dark purple receeds in=myeloctye
The dark purple is indented, but less than 1/2=metamyloctye
The dark purple is almost a perfect horseshoe=band
The horseshoe now has multiple segements attached by super thin strings=neutrophil

I've heard about a 50/50 split beetween Moore & Persaud and Langman's. I've been told that Langman's is more concise. I hate reading books, so leaning that way.

Whoa, that is a HUGE link. Thanks though! That's the best image I've seen.

I guess my prob is all the slides of promyelocytes I see look very similar to the myelocytes (not like in the image you've given me) AND they're never together, so I can't really check the differences between them. 😳

I was wishy-washy on it until I actually started to understand it and to see patterns between the tissue types.

I'm not a fan.

Definitely like Histology better than Embryology. I think that's because we don't really go into detail with Embryo. We just kinda skim the surface, so I never feel like I understand it...

This may be a lost cause, but does anyone know how to differentiate between a promyelocyte and a myelocyte?? It's really kicking my butt...

Here's what I have from my notes:

Promyelocyte: 16-24 um, large nucleus, azurophilic granules (not specific)
Myelocyte: 10‑12 um, condensed rounded nucleus, specific granules

So the promyelocyte will be up to 2x larger than the myelocyte, and more importantly, up to 3 times larger than the red blood cell (which is used for comparison). The nucleus in the promyelocyte is still very big and consumes most of the cell. Also, the promyelocyte only has azurophilic granules, which are non-specific, so the promyelocyte is the precursor for eosinophils, basophils, and neutrophils, whereas the myelocyte has the specific granules present for each of those granulocyte types.

I like histo. The beginning is boring. Learning the specifics about Connective Tissue and epithelium is bleh.

But I really like learning about the different systems and once you get the hang of what different tissues look like, it's cool to me.

Realistically, you can't tell the difference, especially since cells IRL are in all sorts of intermediate stages. Unless your school wants the students to fail, I don't think they'll make you differentiate between the two.

Alright guys, I'm feeling pretty crappy about stuff right now with my exams coming up on Monday and Tuesday.

Some kind of pep talk would be nice because it's not looking good.

Thanks as always.

I have felt this way before every test, but things have turned out well so far. And if things have turned out well for me, then I know that they will for you also and that you will do well! I heard something on the radio the other day about the positive effects of negative thinking... Basically, because you're worried about it, you will do everything you can to perform well on the test! So just do what you have to do to prepare yourself over the weekend, and you will be fine! 🙂

I don't understand how its possible for me to learn anatomy of everything from neck down excluding arm and back +embryo in 4 weeks...🙁

I'm worried about my exams on Monday too and it's especially scary when you realize you don't know anything, but you know what? You do know something and you know a lot more than you think, so just hang in there, study the **** out of it this weekend, and you're going to do fine. You're going to kick ass, celebrate afterwards, and all will be well again.

...wow, I think I'm the one who needed that pick-me up talk.

Well it sounds like you just gave it to yourself. 👍

Who knew that the crista galli could be used in self defense?!

After a couple of days, cardiovascular embryology has finally mostly clicked for me. Thank you. Now I can concentrate on tying up loose ends in everything else, mostly anatomy.

Calling it quits for the night. I'm kind of brain dead. Start again tomorrow morning.

The world is working against me this weekend: FEMA is doing some stupid thing and the air condition will be out from 5am-11am tomorrow throughout the whole school, not to mention the library will be closed. 😡

...and the Saints have a home game on Sunday at noon, meaning 2 of our student parking lots will be unavailable and traffic will be horrendous. 😡

I can get through it.

:luck: Luun and Float!

I want to watch the Gumps vs Pigs but I'm at school with embryology and gross.

I'm with embryology and gross in my living room, while watching Gumps v Pigs. It's quite entertaining. Gumps' secondary is awful, and so is the Pigs' run D. Upset alert bigtime.

Also, remember how a couple of pages ago I mentioned Texas being a joke and not worthy of being ranked in the Top 10? Well, they're losing 13-3 to UCLA right now, so I really hope that result holds and they're exposed as frauds.

As for studying, it's going... Mostly reviewing right now. Hopefully I have a good enough base of knowledge to be at the reviewing point because it's kind of too late now.

...and Mallett ices the game for Bama with an absolutely turrible interception (2nd in a row) on a promising drive. What a letdown - up 20-7 and will most likely lose 24-20.

Not as bad as Texas' epic fail. 34-12 UCLA. How did UCLA score 34 points on anybody, let alone the "number 7" team?

Wooo! I'm in the same boat! 2 tests down, 4 more in the next few days. Yay for studying hardcore all weekend!

I feel much better about my exams now, but I still have a longggg way to go. I studied almost 6 hours with a classmate today and now I'm loading up on my 2nd cup of coffee for the night ahead! It's funny how things start making sense 2 days before a test.

Pass/fail is the best thing ever. I know I'd never pull an A on this anatomy test I have coming up, but there's no difference in a 65% and a 100% on this test so I don't really care. I don't like embryology so I'm just not going to study it much.

So is your school pass/fail throughout all of your time there or only for particular classes?
