Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
But the problem with RHA is that active members of the organization all have leadership positions. Technically, the average RHA member doesn't do anything at all, beside go to our programs and eat our free food. So everything that's relevant with RHA for me is related to my leadership positions so I wouldn't have much to say outside of that.

Hmmm, but don't you have other leadership experience? You can focus on what you did in the RHA, but then you can focus on how you orchestrated it in the leadership. I would definitely consider a leadership category regardless, because you'll have enough to list there that it won't look like filler.

There have been unacknowledged tops. This is better than that.

I'm thinking that unacknowledged tops might even be better...

I think it might be bed time. Reading a bunch of early English manuscripts and it hurts the brain...

Night all!

I'm sorry, man, but it's the syphilis that's hurting your brain...

Goodnight. I think I'm going to have follow suit in just a sec.

Yeah, but would it really make that much of a difference? I mean I guess it'd be better to see all of them together, but I wrote them all into my other descriptions. And what one would I drop? Honor Societies? I mean the only reason I included it was because I have leadership in two of them. Sigh.

In that case, then yes. Drop the honors societies and replace it with leadership. For your app it will look better. Not that you need any help, because I'm sure all your PS really needs to say is "take me or I'll go somewhere else." But I would make that change.

I think your headings look solid. I was just wondering what people who list 15 headings put.

All right... Now I'm off to bed... All alone. So disappointed. 🙁

haha....that could be kissmes LOI to her schools:meanie:

If you are into LOR (Lord of the Rings not Letter of Recommendation)

I just read Intern by Sandeep Juahar. I thought it was pretty interesting, giving a first-hand account of internship in New York.

oooh, yeah, i read about that in the new york times and keep forgetting to pick it up.

Have you read Harry Potter? If not, you should.

read, and re-read, and re-read, and...

Any book by David Sedaris. He is one of the most humorous authors/essayists ever. He came to speak at UCLA the day before my mol bio midterm and two days before my thesis was due... evil man for the timing, but an awesome writer none the less.

LOVE him. so very much. i actually got his most recent book on "tape" for my ipod. 'twas excellent.

:woot: Are you putting in all 15?

i am i am! glad to hear i'm not the only one. if i remember correctly, mine are: teaching health classes in NYC public schools (volunteer), my current social justice fellowship, my current full-time job, volunteering in a clinic, research I, research II, publication, honors/awards, shadowing, artistic director of my dance troupe, paid work in an endocrinologist's office, TAing bio and chem classes, helping a woman write a book for non-science geeks on mercury poisoning, teaching conflict resolution to 5th graders in harlem (volunteer), study of classical piano and classical ballet/modern dance. phew!

Oh yeah... that's the other one. I'm a *****.

damn, i won't have room to list that in mine either. perhaps i'll work it into my PS :meanie:

looks like no one is here yet
Probably because its sat its a recovery day👍. And us on the west coast are probably still sleeping...unfortunately I have this lame volunteer meeting today and I have to get up 🙁

recovering from last night LOL

Morning peoples!!! Well, afternoon I suppose. So I totally didn't think that medical schools recruited, but so far I've gotten emails from two schools telling me how awesomely amazing they are and such - UAB and MCW... random.

the new green day album is pretty good.

OK, I'm determined to finish the activities today. Also, my mom's been bothering me about this... when is everyone planning on suit shopping?? I figured I'd wait until at least I had a secondary submitted. I mean besides Vandy, you can't get an interview without having a complete application.

im just using the one i wore to graduation, weddings, etc. too poor to buy another one lol

nice dude, i wanna learn kung fu but................. (many reasons) lolol

i kept doing that...too scared, shy, not fit enuf, etc, etc, etc.
but then once i started, im addicted
its great

So I got this new watch for my birthday. Yesterday, I went to go get links taken out of it. Did that, set it, and it stopped working after like 5 minutes. :wtf: Turns out, it doesn't have a battery. I have to wind it everyday. Weird.

Same here, I got an email from MCW talking about my MCAT score and I was like hmmm, interesting...

Ill probably go buy a suit sometime during the summer when i have a break from school. Theres no rush...interviews arent till like sept at the earliest.

Yeah, I'll just tell her to calm down. Besides, I plan on toning up a bit before the fall. Don't want to get a suit and then have it not fit later.

In other news, I finished my activities. :woot: I put them all in and the newest draft of my PS (which is 5299 characters haha), and my application is 20 pages long. 😱

My PS was like 2000 characters too long...took me longer to cut it down to exactly 5300 then actually write the damn thing lol....I couldnt even narrow it down actually I had to have someone on SDN help me 🙁

The activities really weren't so bad once I started writing. Although I'm sure I'm going to have to go back and rewrite most of them. I'm not exactly sure what they want to see. I described my involvement in these activities, but I didn't relate it the med school at all. Nor did I have fun little stories about what I learned for them. Is that a problem?

Is it a problem? A slight one according to a UCI adcom i talked to but honestly i doubt it. And with your stats serious.....its not going to matter lol. I think this whole topic is pretty subjective. As ive read LizzyM say on here that she wants it in bullet form and short and sweet nothing more. 2 adcoms, 2 different opinions dont think it matters much in the end.

that pump thing anesthesiologists use to help the patient breathe, what is it called?

Your work/activities list should speak for itself, I think. Like my personal statement, I hope my list of activities gets the message across - without me just outright bragging on myself. I definitely wouldn't worry too much considering the quality (and quantity, for that matter) of your activities. Just don't go overboard in the descriptions

I'm flipping out because I take the MCAT in less than two weeks, and I just made my worst practice test score in a month :scared:. . . Not cool

Like I think that what I learned from the activities should be obvious from the descriptions. I just don't want to make them into a super cheesy feel good thing either. Honestly, I didn't do the majority of them to put on my application. I did them because I thought they were fun, so I don't want to cheapen them to the "RHA taught me how to work with others, a great skill for a physician to have" crap.

I got a 24 2 weeks before the MCAT... don't worry, it happens...

Just kidding

Epic top fail. :O

This. I mean, instead of listing a leadership position, for instance, and then describing all your different individual actions and roles as a leader, just list it and give a brief description. Adcoms realize it required a lot of responsibility to, say, be president of a club or something - you don't have to spell it out for them. In fact, it would probably come across as arrogant to go into the minute details of every one of your activities

Obviously, if it had a significant impact on your life, tell why. Just don't go into excruciating detailt. . .

Most of mine, I spend the majority explaining the organization and it's purpose. Then little details about my specific role. Think that's good? I just really hate the "this experience taught me dedication and organization" bullcrap. Well, duh!

Structural failure of the top of a building in Mexico City.
I'd say. It also looks like the entire landscape has been burnt to a crisp - i.e., everything's black

24?! 😱 I can imagine the nightmares. You turned out just fine, though, so I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that I do the same

That's perfect, I'm sure. I'm certainly no expert myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I just try to keep in mind how many of these things adcoms have to read each cycle. In my mind, brevity itself might make a good impression
